Why can't we attract good players?

Matt Tubbs is better than Jose Baxter? No chance.

Matt Tubbs playing in very good sides at this level - 8 goals in 55
Jose Baxter in struggling sides at this level - 19 in 60

The former is an out and our striker, the latter is more of a drifting attacker midfielder. Sorry, it's not even close.

Don't want to get into the age old argument of 'do they count' but how many of Jose's goals at Oldham were penalties? Also how many starts did tubbs have? Goals per minute ratio? And I personally think he's better, matter of opinion but I think Jose deceives a lot of people with his fancy flicks and tricks. Still hasn't assisted for us yet. Purely a matter of opinion of course. There's a lot goals in appearances of Wikipedia doesn't tell us.

Though I think getting into a tubbs/Baxter debate will digress from the general question somewhat, so I shall leave it there!

Well Matt Tubbs is a very good player at this level, and is he better than Baxter or Porter? Yes, quite comfortably in fact! Grealish I have seen twice, and make a different assessment of him from the same game it seems! I thought he ran the show against us last week. Also the fact we were 'piss poor' kind of sums up my point. We ARE piss poor! He would certainly be an improvement. Al-Abd I haven't seen, but the guys played 300 games for Brighton in L1 and Champ and is still only 29, so it can be assumed he is a decent addition.I have also seen Gillett many a time, and a player I've been wanting us to sign for a while, but obviously football is extremely subjective.

Maybe I'm being overly cynical here, but I can't remember the last signing we made where I though 'Oh that's a rayt signing, that'. But Bradford have just got McLean, Brizzle got JET etc etc, and these players don't land at our door ever. Since Beattie really. Just a bit disillusioned with our transfer policy over the last.... well since Dean and Fjortoft left on that infamous day!

PS. Couldn't really justify my point with Gillingham, they've signed some right dross!

Remember,Bradford have just got £3million for Wells and I'll be amazed if JET doesn't leave for a better club by the end of the window

Agree we are piss poor. I am more concerned that we get the right loans in now to keep us up (I suspect Aidy White plus one more striker ) then(hopefully) push on with the clearout in the summer so Clough get get is team together

Our JTW is like a game of Cluedo
Everyone else gets to pick their characters and then we are faced with the choice of Mrs White the jolly but jelly based cook or Mrs Peacock - the past it, deranged old woman with the onset of senile dementia

Rotherham are in for Leon Clarke from Coventry, are we in for him too and if not why not ? Surely he would prefer to come to a club with ambition and potential to move to higher things ..................................... Oh wait, Rotherham it is then Leon.

15 goals already this season says he would improve us

Actually, it says that if he chose to come to Bramall Lane all his mojo would disappear in an instant and he would be finishing the season on 15 goals, if he was lucky.

I havent read this thread dont need to , the answer to the question (same as every football related question ) is FINANCES

Yup true, it just begs the question why the best supported club in the division bar possibly Wolves can't compete with teams attracting less than half as many spectators.

In household terms, we're the twice divorced company exec who's spending half his money paying off ex-wives and childcare for his extra-marital offspring and the other half keeping up his lifestyle. Not much spare cash here.

Other sides in this league might not be making as much money but they are far more prudent, mid-level managers in stable households making sure they've got a bit of money left over at the end of the month.

If we are genuinely interested in him then I will despair if we let him go there. Before anyone comes back with "they are a more attractive option, they're higher in the league".....please read that statement before posting it.....ffs if we're letting the Rotherham's of this world beat us to players it's time to give up.

If we are to believe anything about "game changing" investment then surely we can offer more of what footballers are really motivated by.....money!

The people in charge seem to have this transfer mallarkey all backwards.
They think it's like running a business, get value for money. I imagine they find a player they like, then sit down and decide how much he is worth. Then won't budge from that.

But football doesn't work like that. You have to trust your, manager/scout/whatever, judgment on a player. It's often better to pay £1 million for a guy who is worth £300k if you're absolutely sure he's the right guy for your team, than pay £200k for a player who is worth £300k who is your seond third or forth choice. We've got a squad of those cheaper options that have pretty much turned into busts.

We have the same attitude to selling players too. If someone offers what we think a player is worth, he's gone. Happened with Blackman. OK technically we may got what he was worth, but how much would an extra few goals have been worth if we kept him and got promoted? You can't just run everything in football like a business, cos there are so many variables you can't accurately put a price on.

I know it was different people involved, but as an example when we sold Brian Deane the first time around, we may have got what we felt he was worth but it ripped the heart out of the club. The damage done by that one sale was pretty incalculable. Transfers are a lot more than player valuations.

I remember listening to a Steve Evans interview on RS the other week where he said "no one will be leaving in January" or something to that effect. You would never hear anyone from our club saying something like that.

o_O Truly mind blowing.

Absolutely agree with that. It was always Ferguson's approach, and Cloughie's Dad. They weren't bad managers.

Who the hell let Andy Townsend on here? Rotherhams? How many are there? One!!!! You'll be driving one of those Tactics Trucks next.:D

Me and my mates hav created an Andy Townsend drinking game.

All drink:
Any time he pluralises 1 team
Any time he just describes what happened whilst the replay is on
Whenever he says 'clive' (he always round sentences off with this)
Whenever he describes the game 'in the balance'
Whenever he gives Danny Welbeck man of the match (this also seems equally likely when it's not even Man U or England, he loves him that much!)

Feel free to add your own rules, and at least make some fun out of that useless t**** commentating!
