Afternoon S2,
Roygbiv and I just recorded a long old podcast where we look back through Prince Abdullah's time as Sheffield United owner (joint and sole) to try and reappraise everything that went on and ultimately ask ourselves... was he a good, bad, or just plain lucky owner? We also tick off the Cardiff game and discuss the Tom Cannon rumour.
Really enjoyed this one, hope you do too.
As others have said, excellent pod.
I will say one thing in support of the Prince that I think you missed: yes, the Brewster signing being a complete bust caused a lot of financial woe, but it is often forgotten that in the same season, and at the back end of the season before, the club lost even more money from missed ticket sales and related matchday revenue. That is a big reason why we ended up with the problems with instalment payments.
I want to say we lost between 20 and 30 million in income though don’t know where I read that. I don’t think the clubs were compensated for this loss (they did of course get thr TV money) but I’m prepared to be corrected on that.Good shout. I'm still not clear what happened there in terms of PL teams being compensated for lost revenue - I feel like that did happen, but was there still a significant shortfall? Genuine question, I never really thought about it and will do some googling to follow up on the next one.

See I have a memory that Sky were talking about a reduction as the product wasn`t the same with no-one in the ground.I have a memory that we (and all other clubs) ended up getting extra TV money, because all games were televised. I suspect that this broadly offset the losses from matchday revenue (which are a relatively small % of total income in the top flight). I don't know what happened to lower league clubs though.

I definitely remember there was a conversation about it in the media.I've just done a bit of digging on this. The short answer is that it's hard to tell from clubs' financial statements, because the pandemic TV money revenue ended up going across different financial years (the 2019/20 season ended in July, where the financial year for football clubs ends in June). Overall, it looks like TV money neither increased nor decreased, but matchday revenue substantially fell. This is for top-flight clubs.
How do S2, new pod here with Roygbiv and I reviewing both the Norwich and Swansea games, plus the Brereton-Diaz signing and a few other bits. Cheers!
Very good stuff.
Roygbiv i read your enjoyable Pinch piece but I think you’re wrong re the Gannon one as that was in October 1988 and Gannon didn’t sign until February 1989.
Having said that, someone yelling at Gannon for no reason could have happened at any time between 1989 and 1996, at any point before, during or after a game.
Good game v Bury. Deano scored the first of his two front post flicks with his back to goal, and Wilder scored his only Blades goal, from the spot. Bury, anchored by an excellent display from veteran Sammy McIlroy, rallied very well and we were perhaps a bit lucky to hang on for a 2-1 win.

Freudian slip there Selly but great to see JOC back on the sheet.Interesting discussion on the potential for a Souza/Choudrey axis in midfield - The only way I see it working is:
--------------Cooper-------------------
Seriki----Anel------JOC-------Burrows
---------Souza-----Choudhury---------
JRS----------Hamer--------------BBD--
--------------Campbell-----------------
Sub in O'hare/Gilchrist/A new CB/Davies/Macallum as required
Alternatively we have brought in Chouhury as a sub/rotate for Souza - allowing us to go 4-1-3-2 or a more traditional 4-4-2

Yep that's kind of what I was thinking (minus the JOC wishcasting!). An absolute block in the middle of the pitch with Hamer in front of it. Although Wilder has been very resistant to play Hamer there.
Imagine how many yellow cards Hamer would get playing defensively!
I hope that during this suspension someone has shown Hamer a supercut of all the yellows he's picked up this season. So many have been very avoidable. We also need to find a way for him to NOT be the player who has to do the Norwood-esque counter-attack-killing foul, maybe putting him in the middle is the answer!
Yes I'd say it's very likely unless he completely changes / gets injured and misses games anyway. According to Cappy's very helpful thread he'll get a further 3 match ban if he picks up 5 more yellow cards before the end of the season. And from what I can tell that suspension would carry over to the playoffs. So if we don't make top two you're asking him to play 18 games and only get booked 4 times if you want him available for two playoff legs and a potential final. No chance. There's a very realistic chance he misses another 3 games through suspension. Not sure when the cut-off is, but could impact the play-offs.

This is what I was talking about though WRT "managing" our way through the last stretch of the season if the top 2 suddenly looks out of reach with say 10 games to go. If we're smart (and a bit lucky) then we can be about as well-prepared for a playoff campaign as we've ever been.
