Would you sign for a side and system where the manager could go and you be out of favour in 6 months or go to a more settled one if you had the choice

That’s a poor angle.
All a new contract does is guarantee the manager a pay off when his shelf life expires. The players know that any club runs the risk of losing a manager at any point so whether he’s on a 10 year or 6 month deal it matters not to the vast majority.

We all know managers rarely last 5+ years but a new contract should be a formality imo

Fully agree! Really hope the new owners are not fooled.and blinkered by Wilders method of getting 150% out ot players. It does not work in the Premiership as proved before with Wilder, not to mention that he is tactically inept at managing in the premiership. Really DO NOT want him managing my team beyond this season !!!

In your opinion, I disagree. We did this last time and we played another 10 games and he asked for another one, rinse and repeat, then decided he didn’t fancy it any more and got a multi million pay off.
This time we seem to have learnt our lesson and aren’t getting browbeaten into giving him a new contract.

Has he not earnt it? Nobody predicted we would where we are. He should be rewarded, him, the backroom and players have been immense so far.
Nothing towards you HB, but reading this board makes me despair a little about modern footy. We are pushing for autos, exceeding all expectations and still folk don't want to give those delivering this performance.
Those not wanting Wilder to stick around only need to look towards Stoke to see what chopping and changing gets you.
Wilder interview today is spot on, winning is what matters, style of play and entertainment come a distant 2nd and 3rd to me. Good football = winning football, as taught to me by Harry Bassett

I didn’t want Wilder back, his spells at boro and Watford showed he hadn’t changed from the person he turned into when he left. I think it’s safe to say that he’s back to his best in every way

He's done well for sure and in that respect deserves some recognition in terms of a new contract. That being said though, it's not unreasonable that folk might be a little nervous about what we get from Wilder should we go up. I would want to see a much more modern and professional set up behind the scenes, which would include something like a director of football and I'm just not sure how he'd cope with that really.

The OP suggests a long term contract, what’s wrong with a couple of years if we’re that convinced it’s the second coming?! Keep him on his toes.
We’re probably a top 4 wage budget club and we’re in the top 4, we finished dismally last season and apart from a bit of an improvement in mentality for a game or 2 we were resoundingly crap under Wilder like we were under Hecky.
We’re not exceeding anything in my opinion at the moment apart from we’re winning games with players who shouldn’t be in the squad, the reason these players are in the squad is because Wilder and his recruitment pals signed a bunch of crocks and we’re seeing the fallout of that now.
Promotion for us is an expectation and a requirement rather than this massive achievement that I keep hearing about, call me entitled if you want, I’m not wrong.

4/5 years is far too short. Lifetime contract needed imo.

And if he’d got his first targets rather than being outbid for the likes of Cash, Robinson, Watkins, Bowen etc then it’s highly likely we’d not have come down given they’re all still playing at that level.
I don’t see any issue with him getting a couple of years extension. If we don’t go up this season then he’s likely to be the option you’d want, and if we go up and he loses it again you’re not overly tied in. You should extend it a year at a time depending on performance meeting ongoing expectations.

Not at that time. Watkins was the season before so was Cash and Robinson.

100% agree, we’ve got parachute payments, it’s not a massive achievement to be in the top 4, people are talking like we we’re a newly promoted team punching above our weight.
Wilder deserves credit because we’ve still got to play the matches and get the results and injuries have really tested us.
Wilder is doing a great job this season but he’s not working miracles.
I don't remember too many opposing it at the time.

We gave Porterfield 10 years once, also Warnock was here 7, I'd give him 4-5 as he will do infinitely better this time round with backing.

I don't think it is the right time to ventilate this topic.
The new owners are only just in place and should be given a couple of months in which to get the feel of the club before deciding how they want it run.
They have walked smack bang into an injury crisis and the JTW , so immediately have major financial decisions to make.
In those circumstances we want them to leave Chris to carry on his good work in his usual way and themselves concentrate on funding more signings than anticipated on the day they took over.
Once January is out of the way , they can decide :
who they want on the BLL board (BLL encompasses SUFC Ltd (SUFC) , SUFC Women & the Hotel) ;
who they want on the SUFC board ;
And
(of major interest to most on here) :
the senior management structure of SUFC.
So it is way premature for fans to make extreme comments such as
"Give him a 5 year contract to build a dynasty"
or
"Wilder should be building nowt".
It's not about the man , not yet , it's about the structure.
How do they see the functions like recruitment , the Academy , the player contracts , the first team coaching etc etc , all fitting together in a cohesive structure ? This is a £100m investment.
That exercise will produce some job descriptions which may differ from the current ones (including the manager's job).
Then , and only then , will it become a matter of whether one suits CW and whether he suits it.
We can't assume that Wilder & Bettis will just roll along in exactly the same roles as before.
The new guys want (and their investors "expect") to be more successful than the Prince or they wouldn't have bought the club.
The Prince has told them where he made mistakes in the past.
In his RS interview , he alluded to the PL recruitment and his "ability to say No" to CW.
I would be very surprised if the new owners keep exactly the same functions for CW as he has currently.
But until the new (or indeed perhaps existing) structure is confirmed as their chosen model , there is just no point in talking about extending CW.
His contract is about far more than just a salary and a number of years , written on the back of a fag packet.
We are hopefully trying to emulate the Bournemouths , Brentfords & Brightons of the PL.
Looking at our last two Yo-Yos, i doubt it can be done without some changes to how the senior management is structured , even if the same folk remain.
My personal view is that it is too much for one man to be solely in charge of scouting , recruitment , transfer & wages budgets , coaching , preparing for games , team selection , motivation , touchline management , media liaison etc.
But of course the owners will decide.

Some people fail to understand that a contract is about protecting the club from losing an asset and not about rewarding past successes.

With one of the biggest wage bills in the league and parachute payments it should be an expectation. In the same way that if we manage to get promoted I expect us to to be in the bottom 3 for most of next season.
