I have a photo of the Youth team celebrating in the dressing room after beating L**ds in the 1964 NIL final. It was given to me by George Robinson who was our youth player between 1963 and 1966 (his twin brother, Bill, was our youth player too). George's grandson is a friend of my son's. The team that day was Walton, Badger, Clark, B Wagstaff, Bell, Barlow, Woodward, Jones, Birchenall and Disney. Also in the picture but did not play in the final were the Robinson twins, Hancox, Harrity (who was the taxi driver who took me and Maud Maxfield pupils from Dronfield/Eckington area to school in the early 1970s), Heaton, Cliff, Conley and Munks. Youth coach Eddie Edwards is in the photo too

Eddie Loyden who scored a hat trick for Barnsley against us in the 1970/71 County Cup is in that Blackpool line up

I see that Disney never made the first team. When it came down to it, his disciplinary record was not Snow White and it had to be said he was a bit of a Dumbo - he was just too Goofy. He did have a stroing kick though, sone said he could kick the ball to Pluto. He did ok in some Mickey Mouse compeitions, but when it come to the big time he couldn't hack it. Sadly, his ambitions had an Alice in Wonderland quality to them and he failed to make his Cinderalla story come true unlike many of his contemporaries

I asked George if Disney's first name was Walt! He said "No" with a little chuckle and told me Disney's first name but I have forgotten it. LSF will know

There is a long line of United players more famous in other areas - Bernard Shaw, Mick Jones, Paul Smith, Jim (James) Brown etc...

In the photo that George gave to me, Bernard Shaw wasnt in the photo or was hidden behind the players. weell known players in L**ds team... David Harvey, Jimmy Greenhoff (who played in same Barnsley Boys team as Woody), Paul Madeley, Eddie Gray, Rod Belfitt and Terry Hibbett. A total of more than 1500 1st team games too!

We were poor in the 1st half, Neil Martin gave Forest the lead . Midway in the 2nd half we were awarded an indirect FK inside the penalty box at the Lane end. All the Forest players and keeper Jim Barron (later to be our assistant manager in 1998 under Steve Thompson) formed a defensive wall near the goalline. The FK was rolled to Woody whose powerful equaliser found a space in the defensive wall. Late in the game TC blasted in a 20 yarder after after receiving a pas from the left

This day, December 19th 1999 (14 years ago),

Warnock's second League game in charge see United win 2-1 on a sunday afternoon, the attendance just under 10,500. Marcus Bent with both goals

Michael Brown and the somewhat less well known Paul Hall had debuts in that game.
I remember Paul Hall scoring at Grimsby in a 2-2 draw, our first match of the millennium, around January 2, 2000. Grimsby for some reason, had not made it all ticket, so when we won 4 on the bounce in Warnock's first month in charge, thousands of Blades turned up, were queuing down the street to get in, and home fans had to be moved to accommodate our numbers.
Everytime United scored, there were pockets of blades celebrating all over the ground!

Friday 20th December 1974. Blades 1 ( Billy Dearden) Coventry 0

In the morning I travelled by train from Newbury to Paddington (with most of the school pupils), I was carrying a big suitcase (no wheels at the time) which was heavy for a 12 year old in the underground journey from Paddington to Kings Cross and I was probably on my own as the other pupils went to different London train stations for their connecting train home. Caught my connecting train from St Pancras with a handful of other pupils (from Leicester, Derby, Chesterfield or Sheffield). My mum picked me up at Chesterfield station at around 1.30pm-ish. She always cooks me my favourite meal for tea whenever I am home from my boarding school which was steak and chips (my school meals were never that good). My dad gets home from work and then after tea, we are off to the BDTBL (my second home) to see Billy Dearden getting the only goal (at the Lane End) of the game shortly before half time.

Saturday 20th December 1975. Derby 3 (David Nish, Charlie George, Paul Garner o.g.) Blades 2 (Woody 2)

My dad and I werent able to get in the ground before the kick of as all the gates were locked so my dad went over to the ticket office to explain that we had come all the way from Sheffield so we were allowed in the ground through the ticket office (for free, I think) but we missed seeing Tom McAlister save a 1st minute penalty by Charlie George also we missed Woody's first goal

December 22nd 1973. Blades 4 (Woody 3, TC) Southampton 2

It was Ken Furphy's first home game as our new manager and I think (maybe memory playing tricks on me?) he led the team out before the game. Southampton were riding high in 5th place of the 1st division table. Woody's 2nd goal was a diving header (at Lane End) and he went wild in celebrating that goal and the Blades fans were asking each other if he had ever scored a goal from his head! His hat trick clincher was a volley from outside the box (Kop End) and the assist was a corner by TC. Southampton won only 3 more games from their last 22 games of the season and got relegation

Boxing Day 1970 Blades 2 (Nish o.g., Woodward) Leicester 1 (Farrington)

Watched the match from BLLT (I think my dad left it too late to get tickets for the BLUT where we usually sit). Shortly after David Nish's own goal at the Kop End put us ahead, we were awarded a free kick outside the box. Fast forward to the late 1980s, a workmate of mine told me of his recollection in that Boxing Day 1970 match of when Woody was about to take the free kick, a firework exploded in the Kop which distracted my workmate, many of the spectators and probably Leicester keeper Peter Shilton from concentrating on the match, the quick thinking Woody bend the free kick over the Leicester defensive wall into the net and once my workmate had switched his eyes from the firework that had exploded in the Kop to the pitch, the first thing he saw was that the ball was in the net and Peter Shilton was motionless rooted to his spot! John Farrington pulled a goal back for Leicester in the 2nd half.

Boxing Day 1973 Man U 1 (Macari) Blades 2 (Currie, Woodward)

Before the match my dad said to me "If Man U lose today, Tommy Docherty probably will get the sack". Lou Macari (5 foot 6 inches tall but scored quite a few goals from his head) gave Man U the lead heading in a corner. Just before half time TC hit the equaliser with a scuffed shot that rolled on the ground and keeper Alex Stepney hardly moved as if he was deceived by the direction of the shot. In the dying minutes of the match, Woody broke away, Stepney came out of his goal to narrow the angle, Woody placed the ball past the keeper and the ball bounced slowly (Stepney might have got a hand to the ball) towards the far post. As the crowd held its breath it seemed to take ages for the ball to hit the post and then into the net. It was the second time in the same year that I saw the Blades win in an away match to Man U (we won 2-1 on Easter Monday)

December 27th 1971. Newcastle 1 (Hibbett) Blades 2 (Scullion, Currie). Attendance 53,000 plus

Stewart Scullion's glancing header from a right wing cross after only 21 second stunned the St James Park crowd. TC increased our lead just after the break. Eddie Colquhoun's pace and John Hope's bravery minimised Malcolm MacDonald's chances of pulling a goal back. Late in the game Terry Hibbett pulled a goal back for the Magpies. After the game I almost got suffocated in the crowd crush leaving the ground

January 3rd 1970. FA Cup 3rd round. Blades 2 (Reece, Addison) Everton 1 (Ball pen).

I didnt go to the game but watched the highlights of the match on YTV in the next day and then decided to become a regular at BDTBL.

Everton were a point ahead of L**ds and had a game in hand at the top of the 1st division despite losing to them in the previous week. This is what our position were at the time

http://www.espn.co.uk/football/sport/tournament/points.html?date=1969-12-27;event=9;season=1969/70

I read that we were dominant in the 1st half despite losing to a penalty by Alan Ball (Hodgy brought down Johnny Morrisey who seized on a poor back pass by Len Badger). Woody had an effort that struck the woodwork. In the 2nd half Woody took a throw in on the right to Frank Barlow who returned the ball to the right winger, Woody delivered a lovely left footed cross to Gil Reece who leapt high to head in the equaliser past the stunned Gordon West. Some minutes later, TC collected the ball in his own half near the centre circle, played the ball to Woody on the right, Woody flicked the ball over Sandy Brown and raced away to the byline before floating in an inch perfect for Colin Addison to leap high and head in the winner. Our 4 consecutive league defeats in March saw us go out of the promotion race and finish in 6th place. Everton became League Champions and I saw them win 1-0 at Wendy on 4th April (Johnny Morrisey getting the winner). Four of Everton players that played in the match against us (Tommy Wright, Keith Newton, Brian Labone and Alan Ball) were in the 1970 England World Cup squad

It's funny how we remember things differently, SB. I stood on the Stretford End on Boxing Day 1973 with two Man Utd supporters from the same school as me. I don't remember Currie's shot as "scuffed" at all. As I recollect - and I'm not saying I'm right - the ball reached TC beyond the far post about ten yards out. He was unmarked and hit it first time and it went back across Stepney at a fair pace and in off the opposite post. I've never recalled it as mishit in any way. You're right about Woody's late winner, though. A big kick downfield from our keeper, John Connaughton, playing against his old club, was misjudged by Jim Holton. It bounced over his head, Woodward ran onto it and rolled it past Stepney. It trickled into the net. For some reason, I didn't feel inclined to celebrate. George Best was in the Man Utd side that day but it must have been one of his last games. He was beginning to put weight on, no doubt as a result of his drinking, and I don't recall him doing much although the crowd noise whenever he got the ball sticks in the memory. I think he did one of his midwinter disappearing acts shortly afterwards.

I was sat near the corner at the other end when TC equalised, the shot didnt look powerful, Stepney and Man U defenders hardly moved as the shot went in so I thought he might have scuffed it. It was George Best's 3rd last game for Man U. His last appearance was in the 3-0 defeat at QPR on New Years day after playing in Man U's 2-0 win against Ipswich on Dec 29th. Tommy Docherty had lost patience with him after he failed to turn up at training

Yeh, we ended up sat right in the middle of the Grimsby Kop, a strange experience.

January 9th 1971. Blades 2 Pompey 0
A week after the 2-0 FA Cup defeat at Fratton Park (I was there). Early in the game, John Tudor (his last home game for us) gave us the lead with a header. A string of fine saves by Pompey keeper kept the score down until a half clearance from a corner in the 2nd half was driven hard and low through a crowd of players by TC and there was a small deflection on the way to the net. Our players ran to congratulate TC but Eddie Colquhoun was shouting, pointing to himself "it was me!" claiming that he had the final touch of the ball

Floodlights.

18yrs ago today I got arrested at Sunderland along with about 20 others blades, wasn't my fault guvnor!

18 years ago today was Wednesday 1oth January 1996. United didn't play that day, so I am not sure why 21 Blades were in Sunderland that day.

You may mean 16 years ago :-)We lost 4-2 at Sunderland on 10/1/98 (Saunders, Taylor). It was Deane's last game before we flogged him.
