Yesterday we were still going for promotion. Today we have a squad full of shite.

Maybe now we can stop talking bollocks about making the play offs. 5th from bottom would be a good achievement, barring a spending spree in January. An i don't think anybody really expects that to happen.

As for Brandy, i dunno. Yet another "great singning" that we could be stuck with, cos nobody else wants him. I really do wish fans would stop proclaiming new signings before they've actually done anything. The way people go on with Brandy, Cuvelier, Baxter, King and whoever else you'd think we'd signed world class internationals. Then the lot end up doing shit.

King is a clapped-out old carthorse, like Kitson, that nobody else wanted. He may score the odd goal or two, but he's not going to turn us into Real Juventus. He wasn't a major coup as some people like to believe. The rest are just ordinary league one standard players like Flynn that can have good games and have bad games. We have a squad full of these already.

and if the same team win again next week we'll be touted for promotion again, its the football fans way!

We lost to Shrewsbury FFS, we're allowed to be a bit upset tonight. Still optimistic re:Clough, but baffling selection today - fop (aka Lappin) was average last week in midfield, I personally think he's a willing runner with a reasonably sweet left foot, and that's it, so could see why he was plonked in after Brandy's injury against Crewe, but choosing him today was bizarre.

Realistically, McGinn in for him, and it's a lot clearer looking team. In fact, for McGinn, you could also read Cuvelier or Coady. Really strange choice.

King has had too many poor games to me. He's not had great service, but he's had a couple of chances - today, and V Wolves he had blazed over when well placed as well. Bring back Porter.

He's been an idiot again today, but we should not write him off. If I was a manager I would be very disappointed in myself if I couldn't make effective use of Brandy's good attributes.

Impressed with Cloughs post match comments. Brandy had a moment of stupidity and cost us the game. Well said, very honest and direct after only his second game, like it.

There's something there, but he's stolen a wage so far. As poor as Flynn is, occasionally some things come about as a result of his efforts. Not so Brandy.

Yeah lets drop a guy who can score a few goals for a striker that doesn't score at all.

We've scored embarrassingly few goals from open play this season, but Brandy got the assist vs Crawley and played a part in the build up to Taylor's header at Coventry and also McDonald's goal in the season opener. I agree it's not enough, but I think he's got enough good attributes to make him effective at this level, if he's used right.

Certainly not enough when he spends more and more games suspended.

How haven't we been using him right though?

Clough doesn't rate Porter at all. Had him at Derby.

You'd hope his appalling goal return would be enough to put the nail in the coffin, but you're right he must know first hand how shite he is.

I wish we could move some of these players on. Flynn and Porter are like bad smells, they don't go away. Every so often they do a tiny bit that raises doubt with some.

Let's have no doubt these are 4th division players and it's time we stopped apologising for them.

A few weeks ago there was a link posted about Clough and Porter. Remember thinking that's his SUFC career over if Clough appointed.

Brandy needs to man up and realise that football is a contact sport. Given his style of play is based on being quick and nimble on the ball he is going to get kicked more than most. There are plenty of subtle methods for self preservation and retribution available, without behaving like an untouchable mardy arse prima donna!

He might also do well to consider over the next five weeks is that having been sent off twice for retaliation, he is now going to get kicked from pillar to post by every defender he plays against and subject of every opposition managers pre match talk.

Our dysfunctional playing style coupled with poorly balanced first elevens has meant we haven't been able to put Brandy in situations where he's effective.

It will help if we try to

  • up the tempo, move the ball quicker
  • play the ball forward more, less sideways and backwards
  • encourage more forward and diagonal movement, prefer those as passing options
  • look to exploit space 1) behind defences 2) between midfield and defences 3) out wide with overlapping
  • show more urgency at set pieces
  • select teams where more players contribute to our attacking
  • show more aggression in winning the ball high up the pitch
  • win the ball back immediately after losing it
  • realise the effectiveness of bombing forward with pace and movement immediately when the two former points are achieved
  • encourage more running on the ball, look for players who can do that
  • get more height, strength pace and athleticism into the team

Brandy is a good player but his attitude will sink him. You can't go around doing the sort of things he is doing on the pitch and get away with it. Clough should get him on the transfer list as of now. It is a shame because he does have the ability. Without the right attitude however it doesn't matter.

Not that I'm defending him but, having seen the video, I do think that he was a mite harshly treated. We've seen loads of players do worse than that at the Lane and not even get booked. Trouble is, he's got a reputation now and opposition / refs will be looking for him.

We seem to be on the same page. On his good days he's my favourite player and you can see the potential he has. He could be a cult hero at the lane if he adopted the right attitude.

I do however have a big problem with his behaviour at times. Nothing wrong with a bit of fire and aggression but it needs to be harnessed and used in the right way.

That reaction yesterday showed a complete lack of respect for his team mates and the supporters who had paid their money and travelled to watch the team. He should be fined and dropped from the side when he gets back from suspension. He should also apologise to the supporters. It cost us any chance of getting back into the game.

He's an idiot . That much can't be argued. But if someone pushes you over twice then shouts in your face, it's perfectly natural to be wound up and lash out even if you are a professional. Unfortunately Brandy now has a reputation for this so will be singled out even though the majority of players might react in a similar way. Also, the fact the Shrewsbury players congratulated the Shrewsbury player for getting him sent off shows a distinct lack of professionalism. Ref's need to clamp down on wind up merchants too- essentially it's cheating.

I'm sorry but the Shrewsbury players didn't get him sent off, he did it himself because he isn't professional enough to be the bigger man and ignore the winding up. He does has potential and that makes it all the more frustrating.

And yet the bloke you laud in your avatar has a similar scoring record to Porter but puts less effort in. Nothing like blinkered favouratism is there?

FWIW Porter has his uses, makes intelligent runs and takes all manner of stick trying to hold the ball up. What he actually needs is a partner because he isn't good enough to do it all himself.

A world beater he isn't, but he is far better than some on here give him credit for.

Its easy (and highly predictable) to lambast Febien for his latest indiscretion. However, I suspect he carries a reputation within the game that kick him often enough and whisper a few sweet nothings in his earhole and he'll do something stupid, teams exploit this and the evidence is there, by the number of fouls he's drawn this season alone.
However, one thing age and supporting United has given me is patience, so in contrast to the usual 'sack him', 'fuck him off' 'boot him out' brigade, I believe he has something which NC should try and nurture. Maybe the 'one more chance' approach is needed (three strikes and out!), but to get shut as some of our trigger happy brethren suggest is a bit hasty.
Now that Lee Cattermole.........

Port Vale in particular fouled him virtually every time he got the ball in the first half of that match. The tactic was obvious.

Porter is wank. You don't see him ( have I got that wrong, how many times have you seen him?).

My avatar is a joke, as is the suggestion that Chris Porter isn't a very poor player.

Perhaps I show the same favoritism as 4th division Chesterfield who even dropped him from the bench after seeing what was on offer.

I agree.
I seem to recall the Coventry goalkeeper grabbing one United player by the throat 3 weeks ago and receiving nothing more than talking-to from the ref.

If Porter is the answer then this club hasn't hit the bottom yet.

Without wishing to defend Brandly, who obviously should show more discipline, I understand his "violent conduct" was pushing a Shrewsbury player after the latter had fouled him and then had words with him.

It seems to me nonsense that that sort of stupid but not really violent behaviour should be classed in the same way as punching or kicking an opponent.

Didn't look like a foul to me. Brandy took a dive trying to win a free kick and my guess is the defender politely told him so.
