What in 1973!?
A full 7 years after Ramsay's 4-4-2 "wingless wonders" won the World Cup?
I think 2-3-5 had pretty much died out by the 70's BTL.
No doubt a more senior Blade can either confirm or deny :)

Can't remember the formation and can't remember anyone caring about the formation at the time.

All I know is we got it forward in various ways (Curries passes would be classed as hoof by some on here) and when the ball got in the box there was more than Billy Nomates to try and score.

Them days the best form of defence was ATTACK

Like a packet of Woodbines
Like a good pinch of snuff

Ey, we 'ad it good then eh?

I was lucky enough to see the era of Currie and Woodward but only just.
They were fucking good though - would piss on these shite of today with one leg tied behind their backs

Why are we playing Friday, televised game I presume ?

Just bought two tickets and not surprisingly was number one in the queue, so not expecting a big one.

PATHETIC GATE , SURELY THE BOARD CAN SEE WE ARE LOSING FANS AT AN ALARMING RATE

before they drop another 3000 to 12000

Really? It was nearly twice as many (or better) than all the other clubs in Division One got yesterday. The highest gate was 7,889; the lowest was 3,325.

It was also better than six games in the Championship achieved. It shows what a terrific fan base we have got.

This is not to say I'm happy with Weir and the way the team are performing - but you should get your facts straight.

It's poor by comparison to recent years. Up until last season we were still around the 18,000 mark and higher in the seasons before it. It's a reflection of how bad we are and in many ways you can't blame the stay aways as they're not getting value for money. I think that was more btl's point.

15000 for us is poor , the fact some get 3000 means diddly squat
2 seasons ago we averaged 20k

that means a quarter have left
that means a bigger proportion of our fans dont go now than do go to Crawley
We have alienated more than Crawleys entire gate , is that in more proportion for you
If those that chose not to go had been Crawley fans no one would be there

The thing is you can lose half your fan base in a few years but to get them to come back will take ten years, that is unless they have in the meantime found something else to do with their spare time. So yes a pathetic gate we should be doing so much better.

By the time Woodward played 2-3-5 had longed died out. Most teams player 4-2-4 or 4-3-3. We tended to play the former with our forwards in the mid 60's when Woody first came through being Woodward/Jones/Birchenall/Reece.

We started playing 4-3-3 in the early 70's, with the promotion winning forward line being Woodward-Dearden-Reece. Woody continued to play as a forward until we were relegated in 1976 when he started to play midfield in a 4-4-2 line up.

Well that's not what they taught us in school in the 1960's. You had 2 full backs, 3 midfielders including a centre half then 5 forwards of which 2 were wingers, 2 were inside forwards and a centre forward.

I once asked Walth Snr about this and he said that whatever the programmes showed teams when he was watching (from 1958 onwards) weren't lining up on the pitch in 2-3-5.

I can certainly remember when full backs and the (single) centre half rarely crossed the halfway line. In the 1950s we tended to have a back three of Graham Shaw, Joe Shaw and Fred Furniss (later Cec Coldwell). The rest were fairly fluid, sometimes Hagan dropping deep to pick up the ball and get things moving. That would leave four up front, two of whom were wingers. The full backs' job was to mark the opposition's wingers, the centre half would mark the centre-forward, and the two wing halves would kick lumps out of the inside forwards.

Mind you, memories are deceptive.

I recall chatting to Fred Furniss a few years ago and he told me he used to be an overlapping full-back. Not that I can recall. The only time I can remember him going forward was to take penalty kicks.

I watched an England B international in the 1950s and there was a Fulham full-back called Jim (?) Langley who used to bomb forward regularly. That was the first time I'd ever seen a full-back do this. Maybe he was the first 'wing back'.

Let's not forget that the higher you go up in the leagues, the more away fans you tend to get. I imagine Crawley didn't bring many fans, particularly since it was a Friday night. I still think that 15,000 is not a bad crowd, considering where we are.

When we were last in this position in the table we were only getting attendances of 12/13,000 - I think that getting 15,000 against Crawley on a Friday night with all the negativity that is rightly around is actually quite an achievement

We have never before been in this position. If you mean when we were struggling in Division 3 in 80-81, you have to remember that attendances were much smaller generally then. Comparative to other attendances, 12-13,000 in 80-81 is better than 15,000 now.

I think the official figure for Crawley fans was about 140 (seriously). Over 15,000 was a great crowd - all things considered. If our team was as good as our support we'd be top half in the Premiership.

No , its not , we have 12500 season ticket holders , comparisons with gates 30 years ago doesnt allow for all football gates rising after the inception of the prem, in 6 years our average gate is now halved, the minimum we should be getting is 17500, just to keep our heads above water.
