Mixed feelings on this one.

Sorry to see him go but we desperately need the cash, so provided some of that is reinvested in a couple players who reply push this team on, then fair enough.
Same - I know it makes sense at this point in the season, but it's that fear he's going to go on to become world class - unlikely, but there's always that nagging feeling.

Until he Slews-It-Up and is on loan at Nantwich Town.

He's got a lot of potential and it's a gamble they can afford to make, we can't and are right to take the money.
It will interesting to watch his career, will he be a Calvert Lewin or a Jordan Slew?
I think we made a huge mistake bringing both Jebbison and Osula back from league one and expecting them to be ready for our first team. However, we did it out of necessity.

Unfortunately we didn’t see much from either Jebbison or Osula in a Blades shirt and I’d have been happy with £1.5m for Osula, like Jebbison.

To get such a huge amount for Osula when Newcastle are teetering on FFP is astonishing really, but well done to United for getting a cracking deal for him.

I hope he does well there, like Jebbison, but think both need time to learn the game beyond chasing down balls and pressing.

I assume both will be loaned out, probably to championship clubs.
I'd like Osula back but I'd pass on Jebbo.

Good luck to him.

Majorly mixed feelings on this deal leaning towards disappointment. Seems lad a good lad. Unbelievable athleticism. Unit of a lad for his age. Good feet. Had high hopes for a breakthrough this season playing at a lower level and looking sharp but it’s a lot of money into the club which we realistically can’t turn down.

Howe wants to speak to him, so sounds like some else recommended him to Howe - Paul Mitchell? My personal view on this is that Osula will turn into a very good player, he has been excellent at every other level he has played and has all the physical attributes. However at this point in time the fee is excellent for United.

From The Chronicle.

"The Osula deal was delayed by Newcastle’s pre-season trip to Japan, with key members of staff with the group in the Far East.

The Chronicle add that Eddie Howe also played a role in the transfer being held up, as he wanted to speak to Osula in person before he signed on the dotted line.

But Newcastle are back from Japan now, and the deal has advanced to the point that all fans are waiting for is official confirmation from the club."
I could well be wrong, but I don’t think their Paul Mitchell is our (as was) Paul Mitchell. I’m fairly certain there are two

Good luck Will! Be interesting to see how his career progresses. We know how to bring these young players through!

Good money for him.

Now. What do we spend the £ on?
Do we spend it on more loans and develop other club's players. OR. Do we sign some of our own players and develop them.

I'm all for loans when used correctly. But I'm certainly not a fan of having nearly half our first 11 being loans.

I think that this could be one that benefits us in the short term as it allows us to build the squad further with the funds from it but also one that we will possibly regret down the line. He could be the sale that allows us to bring in a few more players to fill the gaps up top and out wide, ultimately making us stronger in the long run.

people rightly point out that Newcastle have bought potential. The thing with me is that I think his potential is limitless. He has all the physical attributes to be successful. He is strong, has pace, has shown some decent skill/footwork. The thing that he needs to work on is finishing. At times he would lash at the ball when a more controlled approach was necessary, but I remember thinking that all it would take was for one of his chances to go in (He was unlucky with some great saves at times too) and he would go on to score quite a few more.
What didn't help him was playing in a side that was devoid of confidence and limited in chance creation. Had he stayed at the Blades then I think he would have had a great season in the Championship.
He is going to a side that will create a lot of chances and the pressure will be off him a little. They will develop him and I think they will have a top class player in a couple of years.
Hopefully he is a success!

Massive GLTTL.
Always gave his all, was thrown in at the deep end when not ready numerous times last year just because of how short we were.

Could have had a breakthrough this season in the championship (was looking that way pre-season), coming in off the left with pace and power.
On the other hand, possibly could have not fulfilled that potential though or got injured etc.

10-15 million, whichever it is, is great for us at this moment in time.
Newcastle are paying for potential at the end of the day.
Lad has the major attributes required, just needs to bring it all together.
Could easily see him turning into a 50-60 million player someday.
I'd still say he could do with a season in the championship to gain some confidence against weaker defences than what he'll face in the prem.

Potentially £16.5m for those 2 unproven strikers is fantastic business for us. Even better if there is a sell on for Osula and he does well in his career.

Chuck Lankshear into the mix and it's only £17.5m, and I disagree it's good business.

They are 3 generational talents by our standards, and only getting that for them 3 is really quite poor.
Only Osula has been a good fee.

They're not generational talents yet as none of them have done anything. In the last generation we've produced Walker, Maguire, Jagielka, so they'll have to go some to be classed with them

True if..... they turn out to be world beaters.

£17.5m back into the playing squad for the Championship his huge and could easily be paid back 5 fold if we got up in the next 2 years.

They are, you don't do the numbers they've done in youth levels without being exactly that. They've all took the piss.

They have the exact profile you need from a forward at the very top level these days, in terms of potential they are well up there.

I'd be more frustrated by this deal if Osula had had some degree of goal return for the first team already.

If we were selling him in the knowledge that he's already capable of playing and delivering goals for us, this would be a terrible decision. But instead we're getting a significant fee for a lad, who is effectively unproven at this level. Perhaps he goes and delivers for Newcastle, or goes out on loan and smashes it. But there's no arguing that we've gotten a major fee for a lad who, so far, is judged on his potential entirely.

Potential doesn't win anything. Realising that potential is what generates success. There's often players who fans and the media get worked up about as the next big thing, and they go and flop. Osula may have been banging them in at youth levels, but that does not guarantee that he can/will do the same at a first team standard.

So long as we can get deals done which mean we aren't struggling without having him around, there's no issue here for me.
