Marlon King?

Only Sheffield United could do this.

Just over a week ago, we hear that 'significant investment' is coming our way.

Now we get our customary kick in the balls to even things up.

I won't be staying away (but I can see Friday 4th October v. Crawley getting a four-figure crowd). No, my main worry is than an unfit King playing in the chance-free zone that is United, won't get the goals that a lot of people think he will.

No you don't, but being a role-model is part of the job, whether a footballer likes it or not. Being a pop-star means you're in the public eye and a role-model, whether you've got an album out or not. Being a F1 driver means you're a role model whether you're racing or not.

So yes, he will be a role model to our youth players and to our young fans, whether he likes it or not.

If players aren't role models or heroes to children, then so be it. Stop them visiting kids in hospitals etc, it's a waste of time for the players and the children.

What a load of tripe, role model this role model that!! Kids look what there favourite footballers do on the pitch not off it, they don't say "today I pretended to Marlon King and scored two goals dad, then I went out and shagged two girls and nicked a car" so you had an eventful day then son?? How many people watched and wanted to be George Best? Hundreds I would've thought but none of them went out and got lashed up because that's what my role model does! Kids emulate them on the pitch not off it, 95% probably don't even know or think about what they do off the pitch!!

That remains a concern for me too, particularly given the Jamaican press were not complimentary about his start for Jamaica 2 weeks ago ("looked sluggish and a bit overweight"). That said, it would have been his first game for a while.

We need a lift on the pitch - if he can provide that it'll probably have been worth the gamble. At the very least I expect he'll be an improvement on the strikers deployed so far this season.

Maybe we need to stop investing young men whose only apparent talent is being able to do skilful things with a ball which such haloes? I would never have dreamt of telling my kids that footballers were Gods and beacons of moraity to be looked up to. Maybe other parents should take a similar attitude.

It is possible to admire someone for what they do well without thinking that they are amazing in every aspect of their lives. I think Philip Larkin was a fantastic poet. He was also a misoygynistic, racist bastard. The latter facts about him do not detract in any way from his status as a poet or my enjoyment of his poetry.

I really don't get the fuss.

There are 2 issues -

Punishment for a crime - that's the legal system's job.

Role models - in my experience, a highly overated issue. I don't see kids caring about what footballers do - but I do see parents farming out responsibility for being a role model to their own kids.

I'm fairly sure my kids will feed off my actions and behavious. I'm almost certain they don't give a fuck about what Marlon King has done off the field.

I think the point people might be getting at is that King's escapades will make them think "shit, you can be a serial criminal AND a famous footballer earning lots of money" and that will be a blow to their delicate souls.

I would say that kids learning about how the real world operates is no bad thing.

Embarrassing decision from United. Ched Evans deserves a second chance. He made a stupid drunken decision and was rightly convicted, but if he can come out and prove that he's learned his lesson and is a better man then I will applaud him.

Marlon King is a serial offender who looks to have learned nothing from his experiences. All this "he's served his time, he's paid his debt" stuff is bollocks. Part of the debt to society that he still owes is to grow up and stop being the sort of twat that society has to deal with, again and again and again.

King may well be a twat, but the point is if no-one employed him at what he is good at, would he be less of a twat?

I take the standard liberal view that it is for the criminal justice system to deal with King's crimes. Not me, you or SUFC.

You can probably put together a United Lags XI. Off the top of my head the following United players have been inside.

Ched Evans
Marlon King
Ashley Sestanovich
Carl Bradshaw
Paul Casey
Tony Kenworthy
Jordan Robertson
Vinnie Jones.

There must be more...

Curtis Woodhouse...?
Billy Whitehurst had a suspended
And Paul McGrath has had many a scrape with the law

I agree, and by the looks of it the criminal justice system will, have another crack at it really soon.

Good luck to any parents whose kids want 'King' on the back to their shirts. If he's scoring how do you explain why you won't let them have his name on the back of the shirt.

They could just not tell the innocent child as they don't need to know. In the same way they don't need to know what narcotics their parents take on a saturday night or what swingers club they are members of... They don't need to know.

Best thing to do is pretend that you only ever drink lager in the local pub and let the little 'un have their hero's name on their back rather than tell them that you were snorting coke off some blokes wifes tits in La Chambre and Marlon King was there headbutting some bird

Is it as good as that in La Chambre more info required

Chuck in community service and suspended sentences and you can have Nathan Dyer and Joe Mattock

If we banned Blades with form we would be down to gates of 5000 tops

So, taking a gate of 15000 for the last home game, that means that roughly 10000 Blades have 14 previous convictions and are on the sex offenders register?

No, he said "form", which means any criminal convictions.

He is overestimating though. Aparently 9.2 million people have "form", which is about 15% of the population. Even if United supporters have double that rate that would still only make about 5000 out of that 15,000 crowd.

Sorry, I thought this was a thread about marlon king?

Lots of interesting arguements on this thread.

For me I couldn't give two hoots about his past, its the future that concerns me.

We could line up with Pol Pot in Midfield, Stalin on the Left Wing and Hitler as a (far) Right Back for all I care...

A thread about Form can't be about any other Blades player, because the're all out of it.

Back to the previous point, gates are down because we're shite. When we stop being shite, they will go up. Though everyone is entitled to an opinion, and some will stop attending as a result of this, it's really just "noise" is the grand scheme.

It is. But he didn't say that 10,000 Blades had 14 previous convictions and were on the sex offenders register. He said they had "form". So you were putting words in his mouth.

I would be highly surprised if more than 12 people stopped attending because we signed King.

All this stuff about morality, "family club" etc is so much bollocks. People will turn up if we are winning and will not turn up if we are losing. Football has been a morality free zone for as long as I can remember.

Darren, that is just not true. Why, as Pinchy pointed out earlier this week, fans stayed away in their tens of thousands rather than watch Dinosaur Dave and his bunch of hoofers!;)

No, I was commenting on a thread about marlon king, who has 14 previous convictions and is on the sex offenders register. You have rearranged it to fit your own argument, which appears to be that it doesn't matter if you're guilty of x number of offences, society should always find employment for you.
