Marlon King?

The Prince's man Selahattin Baki's view: "I am not a cop or a judge but Marlon King did his time, he will recover from his mistakes and contribute to SUFC. Good luck to him."

I wonder what the Saudi Royal family think about employing a thief, thug, woman molester and beater. Most of society shun women beaters and sex offenders, even prisoners inside don't like sex offenders and rightly so but hey it's all forgotten if he scores a few goals. Maybe we should do what they do in Saudi and chop off parts of his anatomy as long as we leave his feet alone.
Sorry to say SUFC have found a new low point. I thought the club was better than this and had standards, I really am disgusted that the club has signed such a piece of crap. It does make me wonder if there is any Saudi investment in the pipeline if we have to stoop so low to score a few goals. A 33yr old journeyman with a record as long as his arms you couldn't make it up.
FUCK OFF WEIR/McCABE ....................... ashamed of the club tonight
100% in agreement

I am absolutely stunned by this signing. From a purely footballing point of view, yep, exactly what we need at this time. However, from whichever other angle you look at it, it's an unbelievably bad signing for the club.

I don't need to repeat what he's done and OK, you can say he's paid the price, he may be a misunderstood figure, we need to ignore his past and concentrate on him as a player etc etc. But, McCabe has sold this club, in more ways than one, as being big on tradition, a family club with great values, one which proudly brings through it's own young players and wants only the right kind of player, the Blades Way.

So what does he do, bring in probably the 2nd most loathed and disliked footballer currently playing the game. What was he and the rest of the staff thinking ? The unwanted publicity this will bring in, the division this will, and already has had, with the fans. What message does it give out to the young players at the club, the young fans at the club ?

There are countless players out there who can do the same job on the pitch as King, who, presumably, is not coming here for peanuts.

As I say, stunned. I'm also wondering what our new benefactor thinks about all this.

and another thing..........

Just listened to his interview. Rob Staton obviously didn't go into any great detail but gave him the opportunity for a bit of decent PR at least by asking him what message he had to the fans regarding his past. To summarise his respone,'I haven't got a message for the fans, I'll give every effort when I've got the shirt on and if they have any issues with my past, it's their problem'.

'Googling' around to see the latest alledged incident, are we sure he'll be around for the rest of the season ?

I don't understand why he needs to apologise to us for his past. From the interview I gained that what his family thought was more important than anything and he couldn't give a hoot what anyone else thinks. I know peple keep mentioning the hit and run, however I am guessing because of the timing of the signing that'd done now. Looking at the timing of his conviction and that he has a young girl aged 4 maybe he has changed his ways

Marlon King is a proven goalscorer and if fit will surely bang a fair few in at this level i would have thought.
But i am puzzled why they have signed a player of 33 who has basically not played since the end of last season, when there are numerous strikers much younger, fitter, quicker etc available on loan at present, and presumably the funds to recruit them!
I heard someone on the radio saying they saw him play towards the end of last season and they thought 'his legs had gone' which is a worry if this is right!
In any case,i think even Van Persie or Rooney would struggle to score goals in this team/formation at present.

"It sets such a bad example for our youngsters coming through, who are just crazy about being professional footballers.. Young people look up to professional footballers and we must have standards. " David Whelan, Wigan Chairman.

Says the bloke that once paid £5 million for him

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have noticed that element of the interview. After a fairly poor response initially, Staton understandably pressed the point and asked if he could reassure fans that this was all behind him. He would not.

"I know I've been in trouble in the past, which I regret, but that's all behind me now and I'm just looking forward to playing for Sheffield United" - had he just said that, he provides at least a little reassurance to fans. He can't be deaf to the concerns - he just came across as someone that didn't care. That's a good sign in terms of focus on his game and likelihood he won't be affected by fan reaction, but a bad one on his personality.

Whilst I understand that their are numerous views regarding this lowlife we are in desperate straights as a team at the moment.
Hence the varying views.

Whilst I will be unbelievably relieved if he scores the winner at the weekend I have great reservations about him coming.

If we seperate the team from the club for a minute.
The club has been part sold to HRH as a family club, tradition and values etc.
After the Ched debacle I thought that the club acted in a supportive way to the player before his sentencing and maintained a dignified silence afterwards.
I believe that as a club this move is a bad one. It opens up all aspects of accusations which it might not of had per Ched.

The team however is pretty shite at the mo and if DW thinks that he is the short term answer then good luck to them both as they/we need it.

I don't want this knob at my club but we might just need him in the team. Only time will tell.

I would of rather DW had a different option than him and if its not a master stroke then it will be another stick to beat Weir with...

To me that's the main point here we've signed another journeyman just like Kitson he's been around a long time, his ability to score goals up to Championship has never doubted but has he still got the desire, I think again Weirs dropped a bollock there's better out there

Not surprised some of our supporters have a problem with him from an off field point of view but am absolutely staggered by the number of people who think we could have got someone better.

In the last 3 seasons, he's scored 41 goals in 95 Championship appearances. Who else were we going to sign who was such a proven goalscorer? We've tried and failed to get Leon Clarke who is proven at this level but not the one above. Callum Wilson is another we've tried for but couldn't afford him and he's only proven over 6 or 7 games, not an entire career.

We've managed to find a striker who scores goals but can contribute to our all round play as well. I know it's a few years back but have a look at the youtube video of his 21 goals for Watford when they got promoted. Have a look how many went right in the bottom corner with power. Then have a look at the Birmingham City forum and see how they feel about losing him.

From a football point of view, this has to be an excellent signing.

Totting up a few of the fans who have given up on us over this, a quick calculation suggests the club could be a good £85 a season worse off now.

:)

Before being let down by him...

But he had already got previous when they paid the top dollar.
Goes to show that even Dave Whelan - a guy I see as being a strong moral character in the game, that has very few, can even come cropper.

There's a lot of indignation about, over the last 18-24 hours - how shocked everyone is that football is a murky business full of low life and scumbags, mixed in with a bunch of model pros and good people. Same owd same owd in reality. Not condoning what King has done and I am perturbed by the fallout from the decision to sign him. Just a reflection on how shit the game is in reality anyway - by that I mean the state of the game globally, the corruption, the injustice and the greed displayed each and every week by anything connected to it.

Like it or not football is different. Long gone are the halcyon days of "jumpers for goalposts" it's a multi-million pound business and like it or not "morals" count for shit. Football and footballers don't live in the "real world" that's why you get kids like McFadzean with full-sleeve tattoos rolling around in Audi R8's, and why Real Madrid are paying Gareth Bale £300K per week.

It doesn't excuse what King has done in his private life, nor Ched or McKormick, Hughes and countless others who have criminal convictions but all of these players are or will in the future be playing football. So although you may have strong moral views football is getting more "fantasy" by the season, either accept it for what it is and support your team or go and watch the Steelers.

I'm not delighted with Marlon King being at our club but there again he will be an excellent addition to the squad on football terms. If he scores I will celebrate his goals like any other for Sheffield United Football Club.

Maybe I've just forgotten, and it's one conviction versus 14 I know, but I don't remember people being disgusted when we signed Joe Mattock.

Indeed. Marlon King is not wanting to be a social worker or MP or judge. He is a professional footballer for fuck's sake. The last I looked, you didn't have to be of upstanding moral character to do that job

No you don't, but being a role-model is part of the job, whether a footballer likes it or not. Being a pop-star means you're in the public eye and a role-model, whether you've got an album out or not. Being a F1 driver means you're a role model whether you're racing or not.

So yes, he will be a role model to our youth players and to our young fans, whether he likes it or not.

If players aren't role models or heroes to children, then so be it. Stop them visiting kids in hospitals etc, it's a waste of time for the players and the children.

It was said tongue in cheek .
But go on I will bite, why is it embarrassing not to have a season ticket ?
Shall I go down the road of who's the biggest blade and say i'm 50 and had a season ticket for 27 of those years. Does having a season ticket mean I don't go to more home and away games than the next Blade ?
If King scores the winner this Saturday I can assure you it will be the most uncelebrated United goal ever at Bramall Lane

I didn't say it was embarrassing not to have a ST. I said your statement that you 'deeply regret not having a ST as it means you don't have anything to send back' was embarrassing - which it is. Clearly signing King has divided opinion. But whatever people think of him, to say they won't go whilst he plays or that they are done with the Blades is way over the top (strangely - many of those saying this don't go to matches anyway). My support for the Blades is a lot stronger than what I think of one signing.

My main concern for Saturday is that we win - and I will celebrate any goals we score, whoever the scorer.

Most of the crap that King has been involved in will have been alcohol or recreational drug induced.

All of the people on here who are on the moral high ground must have led a very sheltered life.

There's always the ones who think they are Mike Tyson after a few drinks and it takes minutes for an ugly situation to develop, they are the risks you take even just on a night out.

.

And how many pop-stars, movie stars, F1 drivers, golfers etc, etc fuck-up...? Hundreds of them, it's in the red-tops on a daily basis....it's called life. Yes there are the normal ones who live by the rules despite earning millions but it's the same in normal life, the difference is they are in the public eye. It's a sorry state but just because they earn millions and have a "privilaged" job doesn't mean they will behave themselves any more than anyone else.
