Joking aside, the article below makes a very valid point

Are they furry lapels or is he giving a piggy-back to a small polar bear?

EDIT: I posted this video in the shoutbox the other day. Imagine the handwringing from the FA if we set our own ground on fire with pyro and continued to play while a fire engine came on to the pitch.

You can see the actual flames at 1:30 but the whole thing is worth a watch.

Kill joys!

Flares make a good atmosphere, how about having a flares section, then the asthmatics can choose not to sit there.

Things were so much better in those days

You could get yer head kicked in at the football and no one would give a fuck

The last few have been smoke bombs, not flares.

They've been cracking down/targeting them for a while, not stopped the odd numpty being caught with a spent one though :)

It's quite frankly not worth it throughout most of Europe any more, the consequences of being caught with or using any kind of "Pyro" are generally rather hefty. Some of the sentences/banning orders handed out are massively disproportionate to other wrongdoings.

It would also help massively, if those doing it, thought about it a little more and were more considerate as to where and when.

Still, if someone thinks that it's a good idea to create a smoke effect at Valley Parade, there's little chance of them thinking about whether or not they are next to a young kid or a old fella with breathing difficulties.

Without wanting to sound like a boring old twat, fire isn't something to piss about.

Just look at the Bradford fire, the Station rock gig fire where 100+ died just from a few fireworks and the other countless nightclub fires that have killed hundreds. It's always fun until it goes wrong. Fire isn't fun, it's death waiting to happen.

Call me funny, but when i go to a football match or a rock gig, i'd quite like to get home again without getting burnt to death. That sort of thing can put a real crimp on your day. I'd give 5 year prison sentences to anybody who uses flares or fireworks in an unsuitable place. Feck em.

"Three individuals have been arrested following those incidents and they are all appearing at court. Irrespective of any decision by the courts, Sheffield United will be imposing substantial bans on those people."

whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Wow Matt Robinson. From nought to misogynist in 9 comments.

I'm really not in favour of flares in the hands of some of our fans.

I would be quite happy to watch a firework display on the pitch with the appropriate H&S safeguards.

It'll be more entertaining than the football we've been seeing lately

I'm sure that safe, battery-operated flares will be on the market soon. Like electronic cigs, they won't be quite as good as the real thing.

It is not just people with breathing difficulties that can be badly affected by smoke/lack of oxygen, anyone who has heart problems for example would be at risk too so lighting flares or smoke bombs isn't that smart when you think that for some people they are potential killers.

It's not so much people with breathing difficulties, just people who breathe... them things bloody stink.

I remember near the end of the Blades v Liverpool League Cup game in August 1978, a Liverpool fan threw a smokebomb from the Lane End onto the Blades penalty box and a lot of smoke was coming out, our keeper Steve Conroy was screaming at the ref to stop the game and I think he was rather scared but Andy Keeley picked it up calmly and chucked it in the perimeter. I think Conroy (I was the same) was surprised that activated smokebombs are not dangerous to pick up

I remember our fans starting a fire in the middle of the Kop that night.

How times have changed.

Perhaps for the best too!

Not seen full housebricks being thrown in the ground, darts in fans heads or a firemans hatchet being taken off a fan for years!

Still a few may want to go back.

Looked pretty damn good back in 1991 when we were beating the truffle hunters at the sty!
If your on about the 1-3 win I don't think we had them at that game cos it was pissing it down, I recall them in the 1-1 draw when Deano scored first and they equalised through warhurst??

Was that the game with the 'rocket/flare incident'? I know it was against the Pigs but can't remember which game.

No that was at the lane in 2003. I think they launched two, one landed on the BL roof the other amongst their fans. Considering it was such a big game I'm surprised that they managed to get the flare and also to launching (gun?)'into the ground.

I was at forest away in the early 90s, when we relegated them. There was a flare in our end which was great and would've been if the lad continued to hold it... Except he didnt. He through it, perhaps hoping for it to land on the pitch... But it landed amongst our fans and a young kid got burnt. I think the FL either banned them or really clamped down as a result of that.

I was at Bradford this season when the smoke bomb went off. Didnt realise that was our fans in the bottom of that end. I said to my mate at the time "or all the places to let off a smoke bomb I thought Bradford would know better" turns out it was our fans then.
