Anthony Patterson

I’m assuming here that if we are genuinely after Patterson and the fee is the sort of money Nixon has reported, then Jonansson is signing elsewhere?

Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me that of the two decent keepers, that we as a skint club, are going for an £8m player as opposed to one with a release clause that’s far, far less?
Diversion tactics?

We need an entirely new system which involves ditching 352 for good. £8m could and should be spent elsewhere, especially when Johansson is available!

If there's any truth to this I could see Johansson being pissed off at being our second choice and then choosing another team, before we find out we can't actually afford Patterson and starting next season with Grbic. It's the Sheffield United way.

I am. I’m willing to place a bet we don’t sign him. We spent £2m in the PL now after coming down we are spending £8m on a goalkeeper.

You can see how amazing this is.
I’m not disagreeing with you but I can see a scenario where we basically spent nowt because Prince wanted to maximise any potential sale of club whilst in prem

Now we are down and he won’t get anywhere near what he wants and he doesn’t want to sell for what he probably would get now for us etc etc he might be of the mind to throw a bit more at it, borrowing on the next two years

None of that might happen but I wouldn’t say it out of the realms of possibilities

Johansson will go where the money is

I would absolutely love it if we signed a goalkeeper as good as him. It would be fantastic.

I want to be wrong and would welcome with open hands a goalkeeper like him.

Time will tell… maybe it’s me being pessimistic.

I do think you are probably closer to the truth sadly but you never know

I think we all would be shocked though if it happened

Agents talk. Can't see this happening. Nor do we need to spend large money on this lad. There are much better keepers out there at a much cheaper price. We will be linked to all sorts of players over the summer. A small percentage will have an element of truth about them. Most won't.

Maybe we aren’t actually in for Johansson so there’s nothing for him to be pissed off about.

Not a snowballs chance in Hell we spend £8m on a keeper!

Apart form anything else, he’s ok….not that great, just ok.
Young though so has plenty of time to grow.

Been in a system where he’s expected to use his feet and join in with the back line. I’m hoping CW is taking us down that route but needing a complete back line as well as adaption in style means it’s unlikely.
However, knowing he can do it would be a good signing so that as we develop and add more with the January and then next summer window we may well be ready by then.

However, original point remains…no way we pay that. Can’t even see it likely with the idea we sell him on for a big profit….as that’s not guaranteed either.

maybe thats why were not in for johannsen if patterson has been identified as the one for us and its not forced to be 8m outright maybe that figure includes add ons

How good is this johansson I’ve not really watched Rotherham ? Judging off the blades fans he sounds like a cross between Oliver khan and David seaman.

Nothing like that. He's just a very good Championship keeper who could be PL level keeper if he keeps developing and is coached well. That in itself is much better than what we have had recently.

For the probable fee involved in getting him, he would be an excellent acquisition. If we have shit loads of money, id say go for the Villa keeper or bring Hendo back. But such is life, we don't and are back in the Championship.

Johansson for me, is about the best pound for pound keeper that we could get for the money we have available especially when we need money to be spent across the full team. That doesn't make him the next Yashin though.

Fair enough pal I’ve barely watched him and I’m perhaps judging him off Rotherham’s poor season. One thing I will say though if he’s going for a cheap fee it could put him up for the high wages auction and that’s what might be putting us off.

Or putting him off? Perhaps he’s lined himself up to sign elsewhere and so we are lining up plan B. Who knows?

Its all a bit of a game at the moment with clubs sounding out players through agents, and agents touting their clients out to clubs and seeing what they can get financially. I suspect that Johansson is probably very high up on our list of targets but (quite rightly) the player and his agent are seeing what is out there and being non committal at present, hence we leak it out that we are looking at other targets which might make earlier targets a bit twitchy as they think they might lose out on the move. Bit of bluff and counter bluff.

I think United will move quicker in the transfer market this pre season (shouldn't be hard as we are usually as quick as a sloth) and I sense that CW knows he has to get a move on. Wouldn't be surprised if a few deals are well advanced and we are more proactive in forcing deals through or moving on quicker.

yes i think we will move quicker this summer weve known for a while we will be playing championship football next season so would have thought 3 or 4 deals are already being negotiated

the challenge, as always, isn't the clubs wanting the hang on, more that the player won't to be sure they've seen all the offers so they can make the best choice.
It's generally the players that drag it on, late in the window, it's not the preference of the clubs.

May be off the track a little, but I have watched Crawley Town in the play offs, and the keeper (Corey Addai)
Full nameCorey Kofi Cheremeh Addai[1]
Date of birth10 October 1997 (age 26)
Place of birthLondon, England
Height6 ft 4 in (1.93 m)[1]
Position(s)Goalkeeper
could be a gamble and you would think his cost would be very achievable and if not number one could be our number two. Yes he is 26 but has something about him. Very assured and commands his box well.

Might be a one off, but when I saw him playing the other night, he did look quite impressive. Reminded me in appearance of the lad in the sticks that we had on loan from Chelsea. Forgot his name. But this lad looked he has the tools but would need a closer look to see what his strength is and weaknesses are.

Edit, Jamal Blackman re the Chelsea keeper he reminds me of.
