Ben Osborn

I agree he was solid today. But he has been quite injury prone over the last 2 years, so for me extending his contract is a poor decision. Disappointed to hear Wilder talking like that.
Remember he doesn’t score and his set pieces are really poor, he is not athletic but he does work hard and tries his best

I think Norwood is done. I don't see us retaining him for next season.

And keeping this in mind, is exactly why we need to keep Ozzy, especially with Slimane looking no better or less injury prone.

Next season is certainly looking like its going to be another long one, if this is the ambition of players that we are looking to work with!
What level of players should we be looking to work with, Premier League ones? We couldn't even afford those this season.

Osborn is a good championship player, versatile and has a good attitude. With many players moving on, it makes sense to keep Ben while we transition.

Lad next to me tonight defined Ozzy perfectly. He'll give you a 6/10 performance in any position you ask him most weeks. He'll never be an 8 or 9, but he'll very rarely be a 3 or 4. He's an incredibly versatile player, won't be on silly wages, and always puts in a shift. If he's one of the ones out of contract in summer, he'd be one of the first I'd offer a new deal to ahead of the Championship.

Also, he was fucking brilliant tonight. Covered every blade of grass on the pitch and ran his blood to water. Cruelly underrated player.

It's an absolute no brainer for me. Yes he may be limited at this level but he's a solid championship player. Whilst unlikely to be a regular starter he covers numerous positions to a decent standard and he's never gonna let us down. He wont be on massive wages (at a guess) and it's one less player we'd have to bring in when we already know we'll have a large turnaround of players this summer.

Whilst the likes of Paddy McNair (who have recently been mentioned on here - and it also wouldn't surprise me if we are not talking to the agents of Alan Browne, and others?) don't get the blood flowing for quite a few people, these types of players are better options for me than mini run around, often injured Ben.

Part of the reason is to help with continuity, to have players that know how Wilder works in the building, helping new players bed in and buy into the manager.

If somebody like Alan Browne is such a good option, why has he never been close to joining a PL club? Osborn was impressive enough in the Championship to merit a move up, whereas Browne has been at PNE, on relatively small wages, yet even a top Championship club never bothered to buy him.

It's easy to look across the Championship and desire players that stand out, like McNair, Browne, C. Robinson and L. Freeman. But there aren't any guarantees that these players can fit in and replicate their form at a new club.

Did Jordan Hugill ever justify his huge transfer fee after standing out at PNE? Daniel Johnson always looked brilliant against us, he's gone to Stoke and hardly impressed. The grass isn't always greener, and new players aren't always better.

All about opinions, and my general seasonal impact opinion of run around Ben (but offers very little else - in my opinion), is obviously quite a bit less than others.

As for "new players aren't always better", you will never know, if you don't try.

Thats quite an accolade, but still only a 7 presumably?

I agree, he was excellent tonight and never gives anything less that 100%

That's fair enough.

I don't think it's beyond debate as to whether we give Osborn another contract or not. It's just that we'll be taking a lot of gambles on a lot of new players this summer, where Osborn is a sure thing. We could gamble on someone like Browne (who is also very versatile) and he could be better or worse than Ben, or we could settle for what we know we have. It's a tough call.

People now seem keen on renewing Osborn's contract. And McBurnie's. Some people also want to keep Jebbison and Baldock.

It will be interesting to see who actually plays when these players go through their annual injury layoffs. It's bad enough we are stuck with Brewster and Davies as it is.

It’s likely we will need experienced pros with a good work ethic and a positive mindset. Especially as we make greater use of academy players.
Osborn is worth keeping for his utility, but he will also be a decent foil for the youngsters coming into the side with less loan experience at other clubs.

I'd like experienced pros who don't miss at least 2 months of the season due to injury.

People also seem to be exaggerating Osborn's injury proneness which is nowhere near as bad as the majority of our squad.

He's had one bad injury + one freak accident in all his time with us

So we aren’t signing anyone.

Don’t get me wrong our injury record is terrible but I do believe it’s just that we aren’t fit enough.

But looking at other clubs they are all the same too. Think the players just been playing too much football etc.

Fucking brilliant but not worth an 8 or 9😳🙄

Set against that is the fact he reads The Guardian, which makes him a bit of a suspicious oddball, almost in the Graeme Le Saux category :)
