that was a terrible decision silent geoff salmons was a brilliant winger and we never replaced him of course the building of the south stand affected things but we really should have signed francis lee in 75 instead of the cheaper option of chris guthrie who was never good enough for that level
Agree, Salmons was a very underrated player, Johnstone & Willie Hendersom were well past there sell by date

HH, is there any info on the team photo as it seems to be in a twilight zone between seasons 1956/57 and 1957/58.
Love the 'clogger' boots on the front row, only Alf upgraded to the 'continental' style.
Bought a pair, never played in, of the Addidas off a lad at school around '57. his dad was a director at the Lane and if memory serves they weren't in the shops at the time. My grandfather was certain I would get my ankles broken, he also said that when I cut the tops off my old style boots previously.
No mate don’t have any info on the pic.

Just trying to name them all- Not sure of front row. Lad between Wragg and Howitt - is it Waldock? Also extreme right on front row??

It is Waldock. I have no idea who the guy on the right is; I can’t find a central defender from the other 10.
PS Silent Blade posted 5 seconds before me - and, as ever, is right

Probably the FA Cup 5th round replay at Sunderland in February 1956. We had the same line up in the 2-0 win at Birmingham in Xmas Eve 1955 but I think we wore red and white stripes if we were playing Birmingham so Sunderland is the likely answer

Wasn’t Sunderland as we didn’t play in the white shirts in that game.

What about Barnsley away? Don’t know the team for the game but we played in this kit at theirs in Sept 1956. We also played at theirs earlier in the year in the County Cup but I don’t know what kit we played on that day or the team selected.

You are probably right with Brum or Bolton as I’m not sure.

I did have something in the back of my mind about the County Cup, Donny beat us in the final and they played in red shirts so would make sense we played in White, Hagan would have played though?

LtoR Blades, Iley, Burgin, Johnson no.5 & Tommy Hoyland.
FA Cup regs at that time, clash of colours both teams change.

Team for the final was Thompson, Coldwell, Mason, Waldock, Gratton, Iley, Hoyland, Hagan, Wragg, Howitt, Hawksworth

Remember, Mercer was manager then, and with no ITK knowledge I don't believe Joe and Jimmy had the closest of relationships despite playing together in war time internationals.

Hi Silent. I lived and grew up in Tinsley in the 60's and 70's but don't recognise this road. This looks like the road that leads from Catcliffe up towards the Yorkshire Terrier at Brinsworth but happy to be corrected.
Am not sure myself, it was what it said in a Facebook group
