Not totally gone. We aren't exactly pressing the button on any of the other players yet. He is essentially number one target still. The fee was a lot closer than the media would let you believe and we are low balling Villa a bit in the hope that we get the deal we want. Potential it goes to the wire now and we get him in. 2 loan attacking midfielders probably arrive before then. Balde or Origi would blew the fee for Archer out of our reach and we will press the button on them if Archer ever becomes totally out of reach.
Looking in for latest on

Cameron Archer

To find Berge talk

He’s gone, move

Berge 100% went missing in games.

The problem with Berge was that he was influenced by games, rather than influencing games. When we played well, he’d thrive and play well too, but he wasn’t the sort of player who could lift us when the rest of the team was having an off day. I enjoyed watching him when he was good, but was frustrated at how often a £20 million player managed to be a passenger when he should have taken the game by the scruff of the neck and dragged his team mates’ performance levels up like Ndiaye did.

Couldn't agree more.

I'm generally a patient kind of guy and not been one of the 'sign him at any cost' brigade. However, we surely must have a serious twilight clause of no more than a week in any offer we make. If we can't find middle ground within this time we should absolutely move on to stop us getting a reputation as a club willing to make desperation purchases (a la Brewster where we reportedly only wanted a season loan but then caved to Liverpool after weeks of faffing). We do hold some cards at the table here.

Nice way of putting it. You're spot on.
Does that mean in a better team he'd thrive and maybe even find another level?
If so, sort of a shame he's gone to Burnley. They might be ahead of us but it isn't in the European tier of clubs I think he'd have maybe gone to if he was on available on a free.

Your argument has merit, but falls down when we consider that:

1. 4 wages to pay instead of 1

2. We are limited to a 25 man squad
Agreed on point 1, although mitigation is that you can loan these players out whilst they develop, thereby moving the wages onto another club, whilst they develop the player and improve your asset.

I would say that Brewster was the only time we ever did that, 3 years ago, so I don’t think we have that reputation. Best if we don’t do it again though.

Other clubs know we are very short of quality & that we have the Berge & Ndiaye money, I don’t think that is helping us.

I do think he’d do well in a better team. He’d have more time on the ball and more opportunity to go on his surging runs. Like you say, it’s a shame he went to Burnley. I think we did well out of this deal, replacing him with Hamer who looks more like he can impact a game.

Can't speak on Balde but if Origi is a genuinely realistic proposition for us then we should absolutely fuck Archer off and go for it. I think it'd be the better move.

I'm the complete other way.
Origi is just starting to become a journeyman with his best days well and truly in the past.
I'm gutted he's even being mentioned as a Plan B. It might cost us another big loan but I'd take Archer and McAtee all day.

He's 28 and he's had four clubs in his whole career. That's certainly not my definition of an ageing journeyman.

His experience up top at this level would be invaluable to us. It's probably the best Plan B you could ask for.

Could be a good signing if we can get him on a permanent deal. I like the look of Archer from what I've seen and he really seemed to work well at Boro with a deeper lying attacker next to him.

archer is obviously our number 1 striker choice but i reckon if villa wont accept our offer for him origi will be brought in on loan both players would be a bit of a gamble imo one who is young and unproven in the premier league and another who will be on a high salary and not gauranteed to get us the goals to keep us up

Bump

I think we are down regardless. Rather take a punt on prospect who could get us back up than a gamble on a big loan who is gone in May

Naturally I think it's going to be a struggle and my thoughts may change by the time the window closes, but I don't think it's an inevitability that we're down.

We saw what happened at Forest. If Traore scores that chance and we bring people off the bench who can keep us competitive in the game then we win that match. If we get everyone fit and land a few more players then there's no reason we can't swing those fine margins in our favour and be competitive in the scrap to avoid relegation.

It's all opinions and what ifs, of course. Archer could easily be a better signing than Origi and vice versa. I just think someone who has been there and done it before (admittedly not in a prolific manner) would provide some desperately needed senior experience upfront.

And yes he'd potentially be gone in a year, but he may also be open to a permanent switch if he succeeds here.
