Depends who I've got bets on, I don't have a set amount of games I watch per season. But when I do I'm not very impressed.

You?
Well I've lived in France 8 years, had a season ticket at stade brestois 29 for 2 years, have the french equivalent of sky and Amazon prime, so have every game live, I probably know a bit

Interesting. I actually was fine with it because it's not a minimal market for us. The level we're looking at means there should be quite a few alternates and the loan to buy really mitigates the risk on our side.
I do think we'll convert a lot of these loans to buy even if we go down, because that's the level we're buying, but it means we can make the call when we know the position we're in financially next year.

Yeah it's kinda two sides of the coin. We'll obviously miss out on a fair few this way, but also opens a lot of doors for young players we can't afford initially but probably can if we remain up.

I suppose that's where RND comes into his own, but was hoping we'd have him free at LCB. I can't see us signing both with our budget.
Not sure we can have any confidence he’s going to be fit any time soon. Not seen anything about him being back in training unless others have

We are very much going down the 'rough diamonds' route. This could be a longer season than I imagined at first. Or, it might not, have to wait and see. No doubt me saying that will have people saying I'm 'pork'.

What's up with Ryan Manning is my first question? If we go down then we've got one of the very best LWB in the league. He's literally free. It's bizarre.
He's not literally free to be fair. Southampton may be paying him a £10m signing on fee for all we know. I agree with you in principle but we have no idea what's going on in the background which is why I also think this stuff about Ndiaye is mainly bollocks as well.

Good scout report on him.

The concern would be that he's not a particularly strong defender and PL teams are quite good at pinning wing backs back and not allowing them to progress (which are his strengths).

Seemingly has a lot of pace and running ability though, so may offer something different to our current options.

Another though, that I'm not sure you look at as an instant upgrade coming in - see Slimane and Traore as other examples.
With us losing Doyle, McAtee and possibly Ndiaye.. it's hard to see how we're going to even be a better side than the one that finished last season strongly. Never mind ready to compete well in the PL.

I'm not quite as pessimistic as this Captain, but I did think LWB was a position we needed to improve, rather than get strength in depth. Could even have had a 'non youth' in this position, as presumably it's RND's in the long run.

I still think we'll get Doyle back on loan, but you raise a valid point that if Ndiaye goes, our starting XI will likely be worse than the one we came up with. Overall, however, you'd hope the squad would be stronger - eg, Osborn and Fleck started more games than you'd think last season - you'd hope they'd be starting less than 10 between them, ideally somewhere around zero.

I agree with Flatulent_Bob that these loans will likely be converted, but we're delaying the cash spend - and presumably have a get out clause not to buy if they turn out to be rubbish.

As ever, my mind is on the squad NEXT year - the ones we will need to front a probable Championship promotion campaign. The more players we can sign this window that can be in the squad the following season, the less chaotic next summer will be.

Hardly going to be that exciting of we are vying for his signature with Preston.
Well I have to admit I felt a little underwhelmed myself when i read it.

However, if we sign him I'll 100% give benefit of the doubt. I accept we don't have a huge budget and these signings could pay off. Got to be better than buying players for £20m a piece on low wages because that strategy hasn't really worked for us has it.

TBH I could put a highlights reel of me from the 1970s that would look better than that 🥺 UTB
But it shows he has something you can't really develop - his reading of the game looks excellent and hopefully playing with us he can get up to speed on the coachable things.

It's a fair question, but I think he would have been an 'expensive' free, with a reasonable signing on fee, and high wages as every man and their dog would have been interested in him. Do we want to bust the wages on a LWB that unless makes the step up brilliantly, is unlikely to have much of a sell on value?

I assume we think this guys better, or at least has a higher upside? Fuck knows. I'm probably being optimistic here, but in my head, we're making 2-3 cheap signings, plus the 2 loans - have we got £10m up our sleeve we're saving for someone?

Fingers crossed 🤞 UTB

He'll be getting a decent signing on fee but he can't command too much
Can't see Southampton splashing the cash too much. They waited 3 weeks to get Russell Martin through the door as the compo they'd have to pay Swansea was slashed by about x4 as they were still in status a 'Premier League' club.

But ah, in theory you are right.

If he's any good, he's on loan, we go down and someone else buys him.
The only chance we have of buying him if he's any good is if we stay up.

I like the diamond in the rough style signings when they make sense, this doesn't much to me at least.

Seems he turned down Liverpool a couple of years ago to play regular first team football. Encouraging that he played for Liverpool though as an academy player and that they wanted to keep him. Never heard of him before but looks decent defensively and fast which will be imperative in the PL. Not so sure on the end product from his crosses even those featured on the reel did find a man but those highlight reels are always taken with a pinch of salt. Seems Preston thought they were going to sign him a week or so ago if you assume that is one of the players Ryan Lowe is talking about in an article below and refers to the European Under 21 Championships.

May be someone else of course. I wonder if Larouci isn't a first choice player given that it looked like he was going to join Preston, who knows of course. Shame the LCB deal has fallen through.

I assume we'll have first option to take over his contract for X fee, and part of the negotiations with the lad now will be sorting that contract out, including release clauses.

I agree with the diamond in the rough, my query is that LWB is a bit of a weak link for us, so seems a strange position to do it.

Bar the top end it's crap. And even they can't compete with the best teams in europe - including PSG. It's dropped down the power rankings to 6th.
It just seems crap compared to watching Hecky's mighty Blades racking up the points.

It's possibly that the agreement to buy has nothing to do with whether we stay up though, it could be an obligation to buy, or it could be that the deal to buy is our choice but we get first option regardless of what division we're in. If Preston were sniffing, maybe even agreed a deal with him then the transfer fee can't be more than £1-£2m I would have thought, Preston not flush with cash.

The club have landed on a transfer strategy that they think makes great sense.
Ryan Manning doesn't fit into it.
I wanted and assumed we'd get Manning. But also note that Swansea based rumours were he'd asked for 50k a week to stay there. We'd presumably be offering him half that.

Yeah that's more my point with Manning. You've got a guaranteed player for the league below then, he can compete with RND or free him up to pursue LCB.
This is a risk that for me you shouldn't be taking, we need certainty defensively.

Which is more a factor of how teams in a league did five years ago compared to what they did today, given how the rankings work. There's basically next to no difference between 5th and 6th.

Way it's going with RND I don't expect him to be fit for the start of the season.

Yeah it's always been comparable to the Erdivisie and Portugese League, it's not a big deal, but it's just an observation. I don't think it's actually happened yet, it was rumoured last month when Mbappe was off though.

That scouting report is three years out of date. By all measures he was at a struggling side last season and that improved the defensive side of his game.

I hope so regarding converting them anyway I guess the ideal situation is that that’s a decision for a different owner hopefully with a bit more cash.
