Pickings already starting to become pretty slim down this avenue:
Keepers - Smithies looks like he’s going to sit on the bench at Leaicester. So anyone not picking up Foster is left with Nyland or Westwood
Right backs - ignoring left-field suggestions you’re left with Cyrus Christie as your best bet followed by ex-Palace and ‘Pool man Kelly and Andre Wisdom. You’d expect Aurier and Sidibe to get a a gig at some top flight team somewhere.
Left backs - you’re looking on upping the average age for Erik Pieters or Neil Taylor so slim indeed.
Centre backs - once more bordering on the pensionable to unthinkable - 36 year old Cahill, Zanka and Hector (just kidding

). Naby Sarr and Johan Barbet tick the ‘do a job’ box without making you clamour for their arrival. Now we do sign foreigners there are some sexy names like Jason Denayer, Zagadou from Dortmund and John Anthony Brooks from Wolfsburg but you just can’t see Stoke(a), Tuesday night being on their bucket list.
Defensive Mid - Florian Grillitsch still sits there, waiting for someone like Brighton or Leicester to snap him up. Former Palace man Kouyaté has already fallen under the watchful gaze of Forest’s if it breathes, sign it recruitment team. Otherwise not much to see in this position.
Centre Mid - not much in terms of youthful and fit options. A Portuguese called Xeka of whom I have no knowledge. Then you have former Cardiff man Leandro Bacuna and then the no doubt hefty wages and potential injuries of Fabian Delph. Not much to see here. So now Coulibaly and Osborn are crocked be careful what we wish for if there is interest in John/Jimmy Fleck.
Attacking mid - probably where we might have most interest if the sale we don't want goes through. Juan Mata you would expect to join a top division team somewhere.
Tom Rogic and the Dutch guy with a decent height and scoring record, Pelle Van Amersfoort are probably the best picks and
Rogic seems the easiest fit. I'm also not clear how difficult the Polish domestic league is regards to PVA. There's an Israeli called Dia Saba who has played exclusively in the Middle East, last in UAE. I just don't see us going down that route.
Wingers - if we are to play 3-4-3 these could be an option should Berge move. Junuzaj is the standout option but you can see him ending up at Everton or even Fulham who lost a few wide players recently. Then you've got a few names from the past, all in decline - Cheryshev (ex-Barca), Aaron Lennon, Christian Atsu (did he ever come off anywhere?), Callum McManaman, Anthony Pilkington Sammi Ameobi and arch nemesis Robert Snodgrass! I wouldn't say any inspire.
Strikers - when Lys Mousset is 3rd on the list you know pickings are slim. Italian international Belotti will hit a top league team somewhere and then you have Vydra, released by Burnley and Grabban. I suspect once they've cleared the decks of expensive forwards he could end up somewhere like Watford. He did score 13 last year despite not finishing the season. With McBurnie coming back and Sharp, Brewster, Jebbison, N'Diaye, not to mention Khadra, I just don't see us looking here at all.
So my conclusion is that there is not so much value left in the free agent market for this term. The odd one or two still but most of the good ones have gone.
The next logical thing to look at is when the Premier League squads get announced and one or two get told "it's not you, it's us".
