The Jessica Ennis Stand

3 pages in and no "looking forward to entering Jess Ennis" gags. Very poor.

My though is this is all a bit small-time - roll on next August when we're heralding the announcement of the Poundland Stand!

No doubting the worthiness of her achievements, or that they need marking in some way or another. Also no doubt that she is a Blade (though I do think this is more to do with her future husbands fanatical support of SUFC), but I still feel a bit uncomfortable with this idea. No problem with naming something after a notable fan of the club, but there maybe other more qualified for this as this feels as if we are jumping on a rolling bandwagon.

After making almost 600 appearances for us, gaining England caps and then having a long and distinguised career as a coach before retiring just this week, I would be more than happy to see the Alan Hodgkinson MBE stand.

(not that there's anything inherently wrong with that)

Jessica Ennis seems like a lovely, down to earth, no airs woman, but I'm going to go out on a limb here: she really doesn't do it for me.

There. I've said it.

Have we ever named a stand after someone before?

I'm sure I read a football fan's guide some years ago that said we had a stand named after one of our former players - the "John Street" stand:D I pissed myself when I read that

Poofter eh?

Sexy or mannish? Can't quite work it out. It's like the Crying Game all over again.

Personally, I quite fancy Jim Rosenthal and am entirely heterosexual... so she's perfect for me.

Seriously though, I would give her the most disappointing 3 and a half minutes of her life.

Now unrelated football icons is it? The Joe Cocker burger stall, the Bobby knutt ticket office. This is nearly as bad as the Michael Jackson statue at Fulham. Great girl, great achievement. But wouldn't the Joe Shaw stand be more appropriate?

Still playing Milburn stuff eh Hotto?

Actually, the rest of my family are Wendy fans and I am good at my job, but it has nothing to do with football or United. Put me down for either a statue or a stand please.

Golden girl Jessica Ennis will be wrapped up in red and white after her footballing heroes Sheffield United honoured the Olympic champion.

For the 26-year-old heptathlete – who won gold at this summer’s Olympics in London – will have her name emblazoned on the Bramall Lane stand at Sheffield United after Blades chiefs decided to rename it The Jessica Ennis Stand.

“It is an appropriate and fitting tribute to re-name our Bramall Lane double-tier stand after one of the finest athletes this country has ever produced,” said Sheffield United owner Kevin McCabe.

“Jessica and her family are Unitedites and after discussions with them we all agreed that renaming the Bramall Lane stand after her would provide an additional sporting legacy from the London games, a permanent reminder that will hopefully act as an inspiration to other youngsters to come forward and achieve their dreams through sport.”

He added: “I have been fortunate enough to meet Jessica and her family. They are wonderful ambassadors for this city and sport. I am delighted Sheffield United and our fans can support and recognise Jessica through the re-naming of the stand.”

Jessica, who will be represented by her sister Carmel at tomorrow’s League One game with Bournemouth, said: “Winning the gold medal at the Olympics was amazing, and to be honest still hasn’t really sunk in. It is also wonderful and totally unexpected to have further recognition from within Sheffield and from the football club.

“I met Kevin McCabe at the civic reception in Barker’s Pool and he mentioned that the club would like to recognise me winning the gold medal. I never expected when I started out in athletics in Sheffield all those years ago that I would have a football stand at Sheffield United named after me.

“I can’t be at the match on Saturday but look forward to coming down on a match day very soon when I can see for myself how the stand looks as well as being able to meet supporters.”

Will you be changing the club name from Sheffield Untited FC to Sheffield Vanilla FC? is the question I want answering McAbe.

Named after one of the great blade keepers Nicky John anybody remember him!

4 pages of this tells you someone does.

For some I don't think they even care about the subject; it's just another opportunity to fight their own campaign against the owners of the club. Gets very tedious, very quickly.
