McAtee is not good enough to be a top player. He's too hesitant on the ball and wants extra time to make decisions, or extra touches before he passes/shoots. He has potential but he's over rated in my eyes with occasional glimpses of brilliance. He needs to be dropped next game and used as an impact sub.

Time for cool heads. Not at our best; it happens. Building a ten point gap earns a bit of slack when not on song.

Big response on Saturday and the gap is back to ten before play. Hoping this has the effect of focussing minds just like the slip up at Villa in the promotion season. Not loads of football left to play. Fourteen games left for Boro and still a sizeable gap - who’d swap places with them?

Perfect time to implode (!) and demonstrate to the chasing pack and the likely champions (all of which we play in the close succession in the coming weeks) how vunerable we are against any good side if we're even a fraction off the top of our game. Wrexham exposed that only too easily.

First real challenge of the entire season and we failed the test.

Now Hecky really needs to show his and the squads credentials to get us promoted automatically; and it starts at Millwall!

Up The Blades

He's absolutely fine most of the time, but was bloody awful tonight, how he got a full 90 when we had 3 midfielders on the bench is a mystery.

Jesus, people are acting like we've just been bumped down into a playoff place, this league is fucking tough, boro are a good side, not our night, 7 points clear still, better gd AND a game in hand
Exactly. Losing to Rotherham was dreadful. I personally think we were decent in the second half, Boro scored a couple of jammy goals. That's football. Boro would happily swap places with us.

How all three of the midfielders stayed on I'll never know.

Outplayed tonight, forced us to go long and turnover possession..lacked composure no complaints, but not the end of the world, not many teams will do that to us,need to bounce back v Millwall.

Impressive Boro who I cannot see them losing any games if they keep up that type of form. Hopefully we can keep picking results up and just keep them at arm’s length
Don’t worry they will also lose some games. It’s that type of league.
They played well tonight but definitely got all the breaks.

Middlesbrough were very good but we had too many having an off day.

Norwood was awful, his passing was amateur tonight. When he has an off day the whole team had an off day.

Mcatee was very poor. I'm not sure why he was playing on the right but he ran it out of play numerous times. Should have been subbed.

I don't think anyone else was particularly bad but we didn't do the basics ie. Picking up their players. They ALWAYS had one or two free men and found them every time. Even when they made a mistake and gave it to us we would then make a mistake and give it straight back. Every loose/second ball seems to gravitate towards their players.

I think we can put it down to a bad day at the office against a very good team and luck wasn't on our side. Norwood's suicidal swipe knocking it straight to their player, the foul on Mcatee prior to our "advantage", a few bad touches in promising positions.

I feel a bit bad for Ndiaye, he tried and tried but we couldn't get the ball to him which seems to have been the case for a few games now.

Knowing Boro they’ll probably lose to Luton in the playoffs.

Good game, two decent sides. Thought they got lucky with their second (Norwood’s tackle that became a perfect through ball!), and with their third (poor decision from ref not to give McAtee the foul). That last goal killed it. We looked like we were going to blow them away in the first 15 minutes. They had spells when they were on top, carved open chances (as did we), and finished well.
I think they actually defended their box very well.
No complaints about the defeat, but I think they got a bit lucky in that second half. They might have beaten us without those bits of luck, but it wasn’t a dreadful performance.

They were a lot more clinical than us - too many misplaced short passes - overplaying it too much at times but feel like it’s been coming for a while. I know I’ll get pelters but I see Berge as too pedestrian. Can blame referee for playing advantage but Mcatee should stay down there not keep going trying to beat 3 or 4 players

Broken record here but if we chose to sit back after 10mins on a 1-0 lead and pump aimless balls away from our goal then good teams will beat us. I think boro will end up beating us to the 2nd spot unless we start to control games more. Same shit tactics each week that have scraped us through games but hidden mostly average at best performances/tactics.

It's not good enough for a team with prem ambitions to misplace every other pass and always look for a clearance instead of pass under pressure. Teams in the league above will be much better than Boro. Middlesbrough were a much better team than us in every way, played some nice purposeful football. Deserved the win. No complaints.

Positive for me is the Jebbo looked good when he came on. We still have a healthy points advantage and a game in hand.

Norwood and Mcatee had stinkers today both played like they had been in the pub before the game Mcatee. Ndiaye is off the boil as well (i can spare him criticism for now as he set himself a high bar). Egan is decent defensively but the amount of times where he concedes possession by looping a big header forward or clearing the ball instead of simply passing to someone in space so we can build some pressure is frustrating. so many times in games he carelessly clears it, and loses it.

I really hope we can be a bit braver and composed on the ball and learn to build pressure and not sit on a 1-0 lead (stupid tactic). A tough run in of games now to follow this performance. Will need to step up to the challenge.

We were 2nd best tonight, but it is obvious from the table that we have not been over the season. We responded well to going behind and as someone else said when they had opportunities they took them. Still optimistic, think we will go on a run now.

I thought Bogle was our worst player but seems immune from criticism. tries the fancy stuff too often when an easier better option is available. that said, I do love him and what he brings, so rough with the smooth.

The best team won. They have better players than us who were much more energetic and clever. We overplayed over and over again. They countered at will and it could have been worse. We had our chances but took too many touches and made lots of bad decisions. The midfield was terrible. Been our weakest area all season but they gave the defence no cover tonight. Not the end of the world, but we looked very tired and not long until we play Millwall.

I feel some on here think these players are much better than they actually are. They're a team much better as a unit than as individuals. Very few good enough for the top flight. It's a credit to them as a team and the coaching staff that we're doing so well. Today Boro showed far more energy and determination to win. We had a fair few chances but they did as well. They ran through us at will over and over and over again. Our players far too slow to get back or get to players. We stood off far too much.

Foderingham - 6.5 - Should have done better with the third but made a couple of smart saves and game to collect. He was given very little protection though. Came out to sweep up for a dithering defence.
Lowe - 4.5 - Thought he was poor all night. Even when he got forward his final ball lacked any actual belief and just put a ball into an area. Targeted defensively and was always too far off his man.
Robinson - 4.5 - Poor tonight. Shure his long throw is dangerous but looked second to the ball most of the time. Got involved and lucky to not get booked or more.
Egan - 5 - Lost his battles and never her exerted himself on their strikers. Looked slow and unsure with the bouncing ball
Anel - 5 - Gets forward well at times (and you could argue too often) but dodgy, clumsy and slow defensively. One great recovery tackle. Booked again and must be due a ban?
Bogle - 5.5 - Thought he made wrong decision after wrong decision going forward and his control of the ball was all over the shop. Just running into trouble instead of playing the obvious ball. The ball hogger. There were a few occasions when he had a willing runner and didn't play him in. Looked injured at the end.
McAtee - 4.5 - Did a few things going forward but full of mistakes in midfield. So, so weak and made a number of sloppy passes.
Norwood - 4 - Terrible. Jogging after their players, lots of wasteful balls. Ridiculous tackles for their third. He had a bit more time second half and the passing was better but he just can't play if he's pressed.
Berge - 4 - Another midfielder who jogs in one direction and run in another. Thought he was just bypassed far too often. Another who needs too much time on the ball to pick a pass. Goes missing when the going gets tough.
Ndiaye - 5.5 - Ran around a lot but the poor run of form continues. Taking too long to make a decision and his shooting has been poor the last few games. He just seems to have lost the confidence to take defenders on. He's been slowing it down the last few weeks.
McBurnie - 4 - Goal aside I thought he looked sluggish and ambled and offered very little. Linked up the play a few times but more fancy trick that determination to make something happen. Looks well off the pace still.

Subs:

Jebbison - 6 - Looked lively and most likely to pull one back. A bit all over the shop but added much more energy up top.
Osborn - 5.5 - Did ok. Neat and tide but relying on others to make something happen.

Hecky - 4 - We started well but we were overrun in the middle. I thought we needed to change it sooner and put more legs in there. At halftime I would have tried to put defence first and hope to create something. We had to tighten it up and we didn't. Going to 4 at the back helped but too many poor performances. Getting sent off for booting the board is stupid, however angry you are.

Boro - By far and away the best team we've played this season. I suspect they've raised their game to play us but if they play like that every game they win every game. Cameron Archer, described by some of the experts on here as shit, ran rings around our defence.

Second best, but......I just thought that they used their strengths of pace and trickery against our slow backline far more than us. We did what we always do - pause, pause, pause some more, then pass the ball across the back line and let them regroup. Ndiaye and McAtee (and Berge with the ball at his feet, when he feels like it........) are just as quick as Akpom and Archer and their backline is just as slow, undynamic and sluggish as ours.

Their last 2 goals came from circumstance with the tackle and mcatee, for me wrongfully, not just giving up and taking the foul. They could have done better with a few opportunities and you could rightfully argue that we had better chances, but they looked a better outfit. My biggest worry, and has been for some time, is that our approach was the same as most, if not all, games with little ability to adapt. Carrick and Woodgate are not football masterminds, they have a group of players with strengths and weaknesses that they play to.

Still confident in a decent group of players with varying abilities, but am very frustrated that Boro looked a far better team than us with a similar dynamic within their team.

Bogle was rubbish in the first Wrexham match and against Rotherham, good against Swansea then off it again tonight. Then again he's not the only one. Robinson, Egan, Jebbo and Wes are the only consistent players we've got. The rest are all one extreme to the other, and we need consistency at this stage of the season, we can't be carrying out of form passengers.

...... and nothing done to address it until we went 3-1 down. Hecky just sat back and let it continue.

Why not take McAtee off at half time for Jebbo and drop Ndiaye back behind the front two and let Berge and Norwood sit in front of the back three. Or take Norwood off and bring on Basham?

Don't just sit there and do nothing and hope for a miracle. You're a manager, so manage them.

Hecky has really annoyed me tonight with his stubborn tactics and refusal to sub off his favourites. He's not ruthless enough and he's too loyal to his favourites. Will he drop Berge or McAtee on Saturday? Will he heck!
After watching McAtee have an absolute mare , instead of hooking him , Hecky put onefooted McAtee on R wing where he could do fuck all - poor play by McAtee and abysmal management by Hecky.

I don't think we sat back. Quite the opposite. I would have preferred it if we had. The kamikaze overlapping CBs and immobile midfield left us exposed time and again. I'd have dropped 2 midfielders back and pushed the wingbacks on. Anel was constantly making runs into their box. But every time we misplaced a pass we were completely exposed with equal numbers to the Boro attackers.

Wtf happened at 7.30 on shoreham street ? Boro coach pulled up next to the off licence and emptied , yoof then came out foghting starting on shirters and Dads with kids. I dont know how they managed it, was 3-4 mins before plod got up to kettle em, fucking mad

after the first goal we sat back for long periods and allowed them to build pressure until they equalised. Once they equalised we started to try and play again. They were good on the counter and exposed us a few times. We didn't help ourselves though by handing possession back to them so easily. The second half we looked a bit better but still lacked quality.

That was truly abysmal, Boro were very impressive but I can't recall the last time I came away angry at just how much space they had to attack us every fucking time, that could have been a cricket score

that was a chasening night, at the worst possible time. we can point towards the controversial 3rd. & bad luck in the box. but you just cant turnover the ball as quickly as we did today. Norwood had an off day everyone does. but it was irritating on 4th attempt to keep going at that long ball doesnt work. & when our passing game is off we struggled

& when your losing it 10 secs after working so hard to get it back. we were giving boro every opportunity to hurt us

no good can come from players dwelling on this. just forget this happened. move on to millwall & finally im very disappointed in whichever fan had ago at Robinson. the night was bad enough without turning on ourselves
