Thought today was a strange one. We completely dominated possession and particularly in the 2nd half, played some good stuff. Unfortunately this was combined by two incidents of rank defending - Williams being especially culpable. Starting with the positives:

Quinn - outstanding performer today and excelled in the free role in the 2nd half. Him and McDonald are a level above L1 and all our best attacking movement came through him.

Blackman - Remains to be seen if he's a finisher, but he's big and fast with an excellent touch. He offers movement and running and he'll work a treat with McDonald and Quinn. Mark my words we've signed a really good prospect here.

A strong spine? - Maguire & Collins and Doyle & McDonald is a rock solid basis to build on. If Blackman and Cofie hit it off we could do well.

And the negatives...

The left back question - Williams is awful. Completely lost his man for their goal. Shocking ball control on a number of occasions as well. You've got to go with Matt Hill, but it's still a big worry.

Miller & Porter - The latter was "game" and did OK. The former looked busy. But as a partnership they have no pace or movement and without that up front we look a bit pedestrian. Must play Blackman and Cofie or Blackman in a 4-5-1 and Quinn sitting behind.

Flynn - he's got a good attitude but no pace or tricks. We've got find a winger from somewhere I think.

Overall - I think we'll do it this year. McMahon looks solid and McFadzean, though nervous, showed he's got loads of bottle and willingness to commit the fullback. If we can solve the left back problem (maybe Hill) and get a right-winger in, we've got enough to trouble most. One positive is that we've retained the spine from last year and added young, hungry players with (hopefully) potential. Disappointing result, but rank incidents of defending and the penalty result cost us.

Early days yet. UTB

Home defeat . Division 2's Burton Albion. "Positives". Even Schteve Mclaren wouldn't try it.

Negatives: No extra income from cup matches

Positives: Confirms what we know already that Porter is not good enough

Negative: He is on a two year contract

Positives: No distraction in the cup

Negative: Hill on a two year contract

hill wasnt anywhere near the 16 - apparently williams was poor... whats your point here?

Positives.......... ??? ah lucky to take it to extra time due to a dodgy penalty
Negatives ..........
the embarrassment of losing to League 2 Burton
Blades 46% possession Burton 54%
28 shots but only 2 goals
Suspect keeper
Dire left back
etc etc
fans that don't seem too upset by losing at home to a poor League 2 outfit and who are happy to trot out the same old excuses and cliché's

Did you go metal? We dominated the second half and there was a definate penalty in extra time not given.their keeper was off the line for Doyle's as well. Let's see how we go in the league for a few games before we give up

As the post states. Even though Hill wasn't in the 16, we still have him on a 2 year contract who may have to play due to Williams being awful.

Brilliant.

Without seeing the game yesterday, the reports and comments suggest exactly what we could have expected. The fact it was Burton aside, without Lowton, Williamson and Ched, arguably our 3 most effective players last season we are short of drive and creativity. Given that Squinny could still be on his way in the next 3 weeks it has to be a worry.

As good as KMac can be, he can't do it on his own and teams will know what he's about this season and more importantly, know that he's our main man, stop him and it's half the job done.

McMahon and Blackman could be key players for us and fill the void to a certain extent but the midfield, particularly wide, is a big big worry creativity wise for me.

Jim - agree we need a right winger; their RW murdered Williams and would be ideal.. We did create a lot of chances though.

That 46% - 54% possession is debatable.

I was keeping an eye on the game via the web and the possession was shown as around 60% - 40% in favour of the Blades for much of the game. During the extra time it suddenly changed to 46% - 54%.

You can't trust these figures.

Having said that we seem to have had twice as many shots, and twice as many corners as Burton.

They beat us on the foul count.

Ah sorry mate, forgot you were fighting an honourable campaign to dislodge McCabe by sitting at home writing anonymous messages of complaint/critique on an Internet message board. And I'm apathetic. Brilliant!

YES YOU CAN ;)

What am I apathetic about?

Do you find these sort of results acceptable ? I find it quite interesting that so called Blades don't seem to be too bothered on being knocked out of a cup competition by a lower division team. Maybe we could have drawn a home tie next round against a top team the gate receipts would go a long way to paying for a decent player or is that what half our team are scared of (you know competition for places).

Disappointed by the result but elements of the performance showed a lot of promise and we dominated. How does that make me a so-called Blade?

Would I be a bigger blade if complained more? I don't understand the point you are making?

Yes you can.

Companies such as newspaper, betting shops and sites such as skysports and the BBC pay a lot of money for a company in Howden, East Riding of Yorkshire to collects all the info from matches. This is done by someone at the ground (usually an ex player of the team) talking over the phone to an operator who inputs every thing into a computer. This is why we have live updates such as goal flash ie the vidiprinter. The person tells the operator when the possession changes and this can vary during the match. The only thing you can't trust is the actual match report, esp for the lower leagues as news outlets just take the details from the match report provided by this company and write something up. The report is very detailed i.e where the shot was taken, where it entered the goal but it is never truly accurate as I've many times read a report the following morning on a match I have covered (inputting the info to the computer) to find it not exactly what happened in the match.

The opposite. Most on here view you to be lesser of a blade if you complain. As KM said once, you can only be considered as True Blade if you pay for the privilege to watch the match. A shame really as many true blades can't make it to matches or afford to go. Are these lesser of a True Blade.

To be a bigger blade you need some tinted glasses but if you complain more, the chances are that you don't have a pair

That makes no sense.

its the dead beat cup , who gives a monkeys
warnock openly goes out to losew in it
as do 40% of other clubs

positive we get some match practice from it
all that matters to sufc in the next 10 months is getting out of div 1
anything else is meaningless

While I sort of agree, I imagine DW and McCabe probably don't given how there had been recent press on the importance of getting to further rounds for a potential windfall from a tie against a Premiership club.

I didn't go, but from afar the whole thing had an air of a preseason friendly the weekend before the proper football starts. I won't get too worked up unless this is the sort of form that we end up with in the league - I'm generally optimistic that we've got a squad that will do well though.

I've resisted the urge to comment until now.

At the end of the day, it was a bad result as I believe we went out to win. But, it's just that, one bad result. It's a shame we're out of the cup now, but fortunately, it wasn't a league game.

Need to move on, get the league off to a flyer and put this result in the bin.

Strange seeing as we're skint I would have thought a cup run and the possibility of a plum home tie would have been welcomed as a money spinner or at the least somewhere for the youngsters to get a bit of competitive experience. Having said that youngsters were available for the game but sat in the stands, Danny chose to have only 5 players on the bench leaving 2 spots empty

10 years ago we were just about to start what looked like another attempt at promotion from the Championship.

That goal from Jags Vs Leeds in the League Cup, ignited the best ever Season I have ever winessed.

T'would appear this Season is already inferior to that Season and we havn't even started the League.

meh!

At that time Premiership clubs were crapping it at the thought of coming to BDTBL and being embarrassed now the likes of Burton, Stevenage and Crawley etc will be coming here believing they can get a result, sad really.

Indeed, but times change...for everyone, each and every team: just look at Coventry and Portsmouth - it ain't exclusive to us. Disappointed by yesterday sure, but I half expected it - I'm a Blade, come on what am I - realistically - gonna expect :p

But yes, I pretty much agree with Rodley; shame we're out; no potential 'money spinner' IF we managed to draw a Prem team etc., etc. But yesterday wasn't the League. Recall that shitty Paint Trophy last year? I distinctly remember it as we got knocked out on pens by one particular 'lower league' club Bratfut Shitty, a club near and dear to me (not), yet we still just missed out on promotion, after nigh-on three months in second place, due to the moral licentiousness of our then top striker....nuff said....

Any team can and probably should believe they can get a result here, or anywhere else for that matter. Football has changed alot in the past decade and the only place that such intimidation might still apply is probably Old Trafford. Nowhere is really a 'fortress' anymore. Look at poor ol' Rangers yesterday. Scottish League 3 for crying out loud (IMHO equivalent to our Blue Square Conference) and only managing a draw

Well, sod it, roll on Shrewsbury next Sat. Perhaps a 4-0 hammering might have softened them up a bit ;)
