How many more penalties are United going to let in by our keeper guessing the wrong way?

Penalty takers are chosen (normally, except by us) on how well and accurately they can strike the ball with the added ability of being able to disguise where their shots are aimed. If the penalty taker is good enough to put the ball right into the corner, the goally will not get it even if he guesses correctly. A far greater percentage of penalties are hit within reach of the keeper by either standing still or diving.

When the keeper choses to guess, it reduces the chance of making a save by a half.

I am not necessarily blaming the keepers themselves as we have seen recently that they are being directed by the GK coach. Do we need a change of approach or a new GK coach?

Given that the goalkeeping coach in charge last season left during close season, it'd be a little harsh to do so based on one shootout.

If we have had a change then good, unless there is still no improvement. It doesn't rule out the change of approch though. It wouldn't hurt to test the different approach in training. Then evaluate the results. I have done this personally several times as a player and those that I have coached as an amateur. Every trial produced better results with the " wait and see technique" than the guessing game. If the keeper and coach realised that this is an area that could cost them their job, I'm convinced that they would be willing to at least try it.

PS
I'm not too upset by losing today, I would just like to see an improvement that may benefit us in the league or a play-off (God forbid).

Prehaps we had a decent keeper to start with then might be a bit of a help.

On average it takes around 600 milliseconds for a ball to travel from the penalty spot to past the goalline. A goalkeeper will not be able to respond to that and so has to make a decision before the ball is kicked as to what he will do. They've got to anticipate by about 100 milliseconds and if they haven't made their decision 100 milliseconds before the player makes contact with the ball then it's too late.

Research has been done on the perfect penalty: minimum of 65mph, aim for a corner hitting it off the ground. Approach the ball at about 25 degree angle.

If you watched the South Koreans penalties against GB that is how to take penalties.

United should rigidly follow this template - there were some good pens today but Harry overcooked it and Doyle undercooked it.

Collins's penalty in the game was woeful.

Too many of the Wembley penalties were shit - Lowton, Williamson. Taylor was unlucky and Simmo not controlled enough

I can't believe that Collins is going to be the recognised penalty taker this season, I'm hoping he just nominated himself today and no one could be bothered to argue.

I personally reckon either Quinn or McDonald would be a better choice.

Personally i would get a sheet of thick plywood, long enough to stretch between both goalposts, and about 4ft high. Tell 'em to hit the top half of the net, no goalie needed.

Easy ;)

I don't think it's physically possible to miss a penalty.

If you miss the target thats even worse.

My Dad always says you should never miss a penalty and I have to say I agree with him. The number 9 should be grabbing the ball before dispatching it into the corner of the goal. It's what a number 9 does (or should do ;)) naturally.

So you are saying Porter should take them? no thanks

I am 100% with Hodgyman here.
That analysis by the prof tells me that if it's a decent penalty you're not likely to save it.
However, if you take that as a constant then it follows that if a penalty is not executed in an optimal way then the keeper does have a chance of saving it. Furthermore, if the penalty is struck with power, the keeper doesn't dive and it is hit straight down the middle - they should have a chance of reacting in time and saving it.
However, if you make a decision and dive then you may reach one that you shouldn't get but you are severely limiting your chances of saving poorly taken penalty kicks.
It's also a psychological exercise and at different times fatigue is a real factor (when it's a shoot out after 120 mins of football) for the taker. So instead of looking to pull off the save that is unlikely, 'keepers should aim to mop up those pens that are poorly taken - cos you aren't going to save the really good ones anyway - no matter if you guess right or not. Makes logical sense to me.

I'm not saying Porter should take them, more that we should have a number 9 that wants to take them. :D A penalty presents an easy way to boost your goal tally, something that all forwards are measured on.

Don't know if I'm 100% correct, but can any stato clarify that my childhood hero Colin Morris (Colin Morris on the wing) Scored and also missed more penalties than any other Blade?

Maybe Porter was our penalty taker but as he wasnt on the pitch at the time someone else had to take it. McMahon would be my choice
