Following on from the Tony Currie thread. It seems the older generation consider TC as the greatest number 10.

The "middle" generation let's say consider Brian Deane to be the ultimate.

What about the younger generation?

Going back over the last few number 10's are any of these worthy of being a legend?

James Beattie #10 in 2012/13
Daniel Bogdanovic, 2009/11
Danny Webber 2006/09
Danny Cadamarteri 2005
Paul Peschisolido 2003
Paul Devlin 1998/02

before that I think it was Marcelo.

Personally I don't think any are worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as TC & BD. Peschi's goal vs Forest was quality and will always be remembered but he's not a legendary #10.

Beattie will be a legendary #9 (or #6 LOL) but not #10

Did Katchuro wear 10 or 9?

10 I believe (and it's Katchouro, sorry to be pedantic). He was my favourite player when I was a kid. I was gutted when he had that crap, injury plagued season!

Wikipedia does give a couple of interesting spellings of his name though.

The older older generation think Jimmy Hagan was the best player in that postion.
If my memory still functions right he wore number 8.
Help me out here Broomhill Blade please.

One of the best performances over a course of a season came from Ched Evans last season.

Strong, powerful, confident, was virtually guaranteed to score in every game he played, and a real talisman. An absolute joy to watch, and should be with us in the Championship, having signed a new contract, fit, and ready to fire on all cylinders.

Sorry to play pedantic bat and ball, but my basic knowledge of cyrillic is that it is a literal translation of Петр Качура Petr or Pyotr Kachura but we never spelt it that way.

It's like Natasha and Natalia, depending on the literal translation and the regional differences - Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Moldova etc

Russian Kachura
Belarusian Kachur

I will check with my Russian colleagues Tomorrow for their interpretation :)

My maths is shite "Latters," but even so, I still don't know how someone who was a kid when Katchouro was playing in 1997 can an have an opinion about Sabella from 1978!?!

I was 11 in '97. I know Sabella is a man and as far as I'm aware, LA Blade is also a man. He said he was a 10, I don't fancy him myself!

Alright then smart arse with your fancy fonts ;-). The programmes always said Katchouro. That was good enough for me.

Ha ha sorry, couldn't resist. You're right on that though, it also sounds different when they pronounce his name too...

Weird how they have "translations" for names but if I was saying my name in a different country or language I wouldn't expect it to change.

Sorry but Brian Deane was not in the same class as tony currie. Currie used to control games and his finishing was superb. When Deano got his England cap it was against Philippines or something. Currie was the play maker in a great Leeds team

They often use the western names, they find a name with a close fit when they translate from cyrillic. it's quite common particularly with the Japanese aswell - but they tend to do it to please the westerners as some of their names are unpronounceable to us thick westerners. :)

I Japanese guy I worked with called Natori, called himself Tony

Sorry but you cannot make that statement accurately. Deane single handedly kept us in the Premier League proven by the fact as soon as we sold him we got relegated.

Very different players in different positions and different generations, but equally important in their way.

I'm not being funny, but the old classic number 10 has ceased to exist, unless it is used for nostalgic terms. It hasn't existed since the advent of squad numbers all those years ago.

The best strikers i have seen have been, Keith Edwards, Brian Deane, Andy Walker, James Beattie and Ched Evans.

Nathan Blake always impressed me as a striker. Agree with Brownies list of quality strikers though.

James Beattie.......... really ? always thought he was an idle tw@t and rather slow, I suppose that the £40k pw he was reported to be on could be clouding my judgement as for sure he was only worth a tenth of that. He did take a good penalty and free kicks mind but I never saw him as a striker that would make something out of nothing in the style of Edwards or Ched. Can't complain with is goal to game ratio 1 every 2 games is good but he never got close to that anywhere else, championship might have been his level.

Wow... You're rating Evans higher than Beattie??

You also said Beattie found his level in the Championship so what level is/was Evans at?

The list above is probably more my age given in 1998 I was 8, I still consider Brian Dean one of our best #10s

I know, it's almost as if other countries have a different alphabet.............
