You are right though, we're not all experts.

But I am.

Scouting these days is done by numbers, not by eyes.
100% not true. Scouts assess things like attitude and body language (i.e. how they react when a team-mate loses the ball), and how they influence the game through things like talking to team mates. Numbers don't capture that stuff.

The problem for me comes when football Forum contributers think their opinion, not knowing the inner workings of the club and what's happening behind the scenes, is fact or is something that the club are doing wrong. There will obviously be mistakes and errors of judgement, but I would never assume I know enough for my opinion to be more valid than the coaching staff in the club. And so I will only ever express opinions and I won't profess to know what the right call is over and above what the coaching staff know. I don't think that always happens with some posters.

They don't indeed.

But also personalities aren't cared for by majority of clubs either.

Hence why players like richarlison have progressed. Works down the chain, not up.

Also the reason why we dropped our due diligence approach on players once we got to the prem.

Very true.

I've sometimes criticised Hecky but his constant vagueness might be a deliberate clever ploy to protect himself, his players and backroom team.

My pet hate is how most fans are like spoilt brats....we make demands and want it now.
Although to be fair...the unreasonable comments you see on social media might be from teenagers or wind up merchants.
We demand that the owners take risks and put loads of debt on the credit card.
However there's little awareness that.....at some point that credit card will need paying.
It's always so easy spending someone else's money.

Still think back to the comments on here. "We won't be signing Brewster because we're not ambitious enough".
"He's a guaranteed future England international, so why are we messing around, just pay Liverpool £25 mill and give Brewster what ever salary he wants"

Then there's "There's no way we'll sign Berge, he's being chased by some of the top clubs in Europe, he's too good for us and we aren't ambitious enough"
"Wow, we've paid £22 million for him, what a bargain, he's going to be a top player in the PL, let's savour him whilst he's here because he'll end up at a top 6 club"

Now we get the "N'Diaye is going to be a top star in the PL", "he's world class and arguably worth £50 million so we should offer him what ever salary he wants"

See the pattern? I sometimes wonder when will our fans learn?
I suppose it's the social media fashion regards hyperbole and exaggeration, as it's grabs attention, likes and responses.
Where as logical considered opinion is a discussion end point and considered kind of boring.

I would say the majority of us are not experts, if we were then we'd probably we working within the game in some capacity.

I played the game so I think I know a bit about how the game is played (not at a high level I might add), but I know very little about tactics and the other nuances of the game. I certainly wouldn't to pretend to know more than the manager and coaching staff. There's a lot of discussion about Berge's form at the moment, but despite our view as fans, he must be doing something right in terms of his contribution to the team, otherwise you'd assume he wouldn't be starting every game. Perhaps you could argue there may be political reasons for his inclusion, however I, perhaps naively, presume he's in the team on merit.

I pretty much agree fully with what Roy and Ben say on Bladespod, so whatever they are, i'm in the same bracket.............

There'll be internal politics too. Also some players might have personal/ private issues, which we never get to know about.
Some might perform really well or really badly in training in the week building up to a match.
Then there are positive and negative influence in the dressing room or first team, some might have agents stirring the pot.

Many criticised Hecky regards the treatment of Khadra
but the truth might be Hecky didn't like his attitude and saw him as a negative influence.
It could have been down to finance and contractual implications, so the decision to play him more was taken out of his hands.
It might seem unfair and he might even be wrong but as Hecky is the manager he stands and fall on his decisions.
He's not going to be honest and make it public what he thinks, so he needs to be careful and manage the situation carefully.

True. When I say on merit, I include factors such as training performance and attitude. You'd hope players are not being picked/not picked because of finance or contractual reasons, but I'm sure it happens.

In the case of Khadra, it might just have been that the player and his parent club thought he should play more minutes and when Hecky couldn't/wouldn't guarantee that, it was decided he should go back.

It's difficult to criticise Hecky's decisions at the moment given we've just won 10 out of the last 12 games or something like that.

Let's change this website to "Tips on how to bake beautiful scones" or something then, if opinions about football can't be discussed without having all the proper coaching badges.

And I'll get my two penneth in first by the way, I'm a qualified baker in a previous life so you are all wrong

We all seem to be experts when it comes to football.
Just wondered how many on here have applied to become a scout for United?
I have noticed very few who indicate they are experts in football. Some have expertise in other fields which can be useful, but most simply have views on football and the Blades in particular.
If I say that Hammond is the best player we have ever had then self evidently that doesn’t make me an expert !!

I'm far from an expert but I do have the FA level 2 in talent identification. I was doing some coaching qualifications and the course tutor suggested it was a good idea so I signed up. Very interesting, I'll never put it into use though, I spent years doing qualifications in business and finance so I now like doing football related ones as they're actually interesting.

Not at Fallowfield 'A licence' levels of knowledge yet though, I aspire to be like him one day though!
