His brother on twitter said that the reported price of 3mill is no where near the price villa have paid for him

If true, that's as expected as far as I'm concerned

Gareth Bale £5m up front £2m early final payment Total £7m

Theo Walcott £5m up front £4.1m Early final Payment Total £9.1m

Alex Oxlaide Chamberlin £12m rising to £15m

Southampton know how to get a deal.

There is the small possibility that these players were both younger and more talented hence the higher fees?

Its not like Man United would ever sell Ronaldo to a rival. How could a player like Modric ever want to leave Spurs?

No, the first one went abroad, was replaced by Nani and they still won the league.

The second wanted to go all last summer but was told he couldn't and he didn't.

I would re-iterate, it's not the selling that is the problem, but the not replacing with sufficient quality that fucks you up in the long term. If we had a record of cashing in the young guns but it having no detrimental effects then no-one would bat an eyelid.
As it is, we take the wedge, do fuck all good with it and end up in the shite. I'm sure we've seen it enough times to realise this isn't the new dawn rising.

Typical mediocrity loving response from a bunch of 'it'll be reit' Blades. Makes me absolutely sick. Fans lap up this bollocks about 'we tried to keep him BUT ....'

We could have just refused their offer. Simple. There would have been no talk of 4 year deals, salaries or whatever. Matty, we want to keep you. You're one of our best players, pivital in our squad and I need you. Plus you're under contract. Do another year with us and then let's see. He was under contract with United. Villa would not have been able to talk to him. Oh, un less of course it was the pesk agent that is to blame!?

This whole everyone is a selling club is a pathetic, soft kop out. There was no need to sell, yet we've gone and shown we have absolutely no bollocks whatsoever.

(and SE10, get things right: Man U resisted the sale of Ronaldo for a few years. They got the best out of him, won numerous trophies and then sold him for a massive fee. Spurs refused to sell Modric and then got another season out of him and did really well. We've sold Lowton at the first sniff of interest.)

Southampton lost Bale and Walcott. Norwich and Swansea were all about the managers and both of them left against the wishes of their club.

Yes but look what they got for them? There was a protracted battle and Walcott was (if memory serves me) one of the highest transfers for a teenager at the time. We just drop our draws and let people smash the back door in after the first date.

Man Utd sold Ronaldo as the player wanted to leave and used the cash to service the debt. Smaller clubs sell their better players to bigger clubs. Always have done and always will do. In the real world his contract is meaningless.

I give you Kyle Walker, recently voted Spurs' best full back of their premier league history. Sold by Sheffield United for £3 million, current worth £25 million +

Sell cheap it's "The Blades Way"

I give you Lee Morris - sold by us for £3 million. His career total of transfer fees - £3.12 million.

Selling Wayne Quinn for £1m was inspired too. Never the same player after Eileen Drewery got her hands on him.

We're in the third division.....we're skint.....player wanted to go.

I really dont see what's to debate. Its the economics of football, if you're down the league ladder with not a pot to piss in then you dont hold the bargaining chips. The player will get their way and to put the stop on them would be a waste of time. They will either eventually force the move or under perform for you.

It's not a good feeling when your youths are sold on but considering where we are it's inevitable. If we have got £3M for him then it's more than I would have thought we would have got for him given the circumstances. £3M spent wisely could virtually guarantee us Leaugue one this sesason but the real bummer is that it won't be spent wisely it will be spent paying the ridiculous wages Blackwell saddled us with.

The really harsh view of course would be to suggest that had he not stupidly got himself sent off in the Oldham game, or missed his penalty at Wembley, we'd have been in a much better position to turn down that offer from Villa...

But that's not my view. Good luck to him.

The really harsh view would be to observe that a team that sells its best contracted player is going to be a less appealing proposition to other players currently in contract negotiations...

Absolutely spot on, I said in a post somewhere a few days ago about how we sell the young players at the first offer, well nothing changes does it. One day the mediocrity lovers will either wake up or fade away.
It is high time the fans of SUFC grew some bollocks and let it be known they will not stand for this shit season after season. No wonder McCabe sells any talent to the first bidder when the fans accept a butt fucking without a whimper.

Selling one player if allows us to keep porter, monty and Quinny is surely good business isnt it?

Maybe now we can bring back Simmo?

Didn't we turn down two separate offers for Lowton in the last year?

Despite the endless ongoiung myth that United undersell players, Kyle Walker is one of a very smll handfull of players who we've sold too cheaply. But let's not let the truth spoil a good long running reson to get all upset about nothing.

Let's ll weep for Lowton though. He must be crying in his banknotes tonight.

Are you McCabe's PR man ????

I know you're joking, but it touches on a point. This deal can only be judged based on what we do as a result of it. If we brought in a pacey striker and signed up Willo and KMac, I think it would be good business. If we do nothing else, then it's rubbish.

No, I'm the man who ws heavily criticising him when he was running up enormous debts on silly projects like the WC bid, whilst the majority were getting all excited. Were you?

We're now feeling the inevitable consequences. There's no easy route from here - we can only make the best of a shit hand.

Of course drawing up a few artist impressions of possible ground improvements got us in the mess we are in, stop it now before I piss myself laughing.

The problem is that whilst a fire sale is well overdue, the players that demand the money are the decent ones. So whilst we've managed to release a few of the dross, the stars make the headlines.

As a few have said, it's what we do in rebuilding the team. We were one of the best sides in a poor division last season and with a bit more experience and physicality we'd have gone up. The side we have now is decimated with only Collins, Doyle, Harry and Cresswell left of the consistent performers - so Danny needs to work hard and fast to build us a team capable of a promotion push.

Any decent right backs in the academy? When Lowton came in, hadn't we lost walker back to spurs following his loan recall?

I'm more concerned that we have no goal scoring strikers and nobody to feed the strikers...perhaps that's where the cash will go...

Oh and Luke freeman from stevenage

No, that was just a few hundred grand, with the aim od spending a further £50,000,000. Throw in property ventures left right and center, Bryan Robson, and the extension of extremely highly paid (mediocrity) contracts, and I think I had enough to fairly go at.

That McCabe screwed up is surely not up for debate, even for those who struggle with the basics (you)?

I'm making the point that I'm well aware of his failings, which I think you were questioning. I don't consider selling 3rd division right backs to premiership clubs for £3,000,000 when we're saddled with debt as being one of them.

Exactly, by the start of the season you can just this decision properly. But I'll be staggered if the money is used to improve the team. Over the last few years it feels like our transfer policy has been to fill gaps in the squad with players of a lesser quality and wait for the general quality of the squad (and the standard of league we're playing in) to fall to their level.

There's been a few gems from the academy or the odd transfer that's made me think we could build a squad around them but it's not enough. Given the changes in management at the club and our financial situation it's maybe understandable, but it's definately not acceptable. There's no aim or direction from the top - just McCabe saying "get on with it... but don't spend too much".

I'd love United to prove me wrong. Prove there's actually some sort of plan or strategy or even a poster on the wall of the managers office with one of those shite, management 'mission statements'. Because at the moment this just looks like we're making it up as we go along.

or perhaps lowton thought to himself like many fans do,no ambition at the club, why stick around !
