Any one done 'Ollie SmackBurnley' yet?

Fitness breeding confidence.

For me it’s that simple. The contract thing is a bit of a misnomer.

Terrible injury and fitness record over the last couple of years. Never seemed fully fit for about 18 months, this impacts his ability to perform, this impacts his confidence, fans get on his back and it’s a downward spiral.

Finally gets fit (despite Hernia!)
Plays more minutes
Plays better
Starts scoring
Confidence grows
Keeps scoring
Confidence grows

Etc etc

Long may it continue!

Apologies if this has already been suggested (I've only skimmed the other posts) but in Saturdays interview Hecky, to me, appeared to suggest that when we signed McBurnie we,the fans, expected to see the striker we'd seen at Swansea and Barnsley but United decided they wanted him to work, and to use him in a different way altogether.*
It's only during the last 12 months, between injuries, while the current management team have been in place that he's been encouraged to be that striker he was 3 or 4 years ago.
Never really thought of it like that. While it possibly makes sense it might also be just a load of old bollocks and me over thinking it.
*I suppose I could have just said he's been played out of position.

I have heard this stated in a number of places, and I do not believe it is true.

We may be using McBurnie a little bit differently than we have the last 3 seasons, but not much differently. The team is playing well, but then again he was in it when it played well last season and he could not contribute.

McBurnie has not been misused in the past 2 years. He's been poor, probably due to a combination of factors including Covid and injuries. His finishing was appalling.

Heckingbottom suggested last week, after WBA I think, that the improvement was down to McBurnie himself, and the work he has done. He looks fitter, and more interested.

To give one small example, McBurnie's positional play, i.e. getting in the right place to finish chances, has been poor to terrible throughout his time with us. Until this season. Now it's very good. The player from the last 3 years would not have scored that first goal he got on Saturday. They would not have had the presence of mind.

Something has clicked. There is more application. The manager has confirmed it. It's great to see and long may it continue.

In the same vein, the criticism he had last season and the season before was entirely justified. Shades of Coutts pre-Wilder. But that's water under the bridge now.

Mcburnie did extra work in the summer to get himself fit, had a gym installed at home and listened to Hecky who basically told him to sort out his off field antics and concentrate on his football.
he subsequently became fitter physically, which helped his mental approach as he has been more switched on. He then scored a goal at Luton and got the confidence required to try the things he had previously given up on as he had started to treat the ball like a “ hot potato ”.

McBurnie, I think, has had a bit of a torrid time; quite a bit wasn’t his fault, if I’m being honest.

First season. He started brightly against Leicester. Mousset and McGoldrick become the central partnership. He still scores some vital goals but is overshadowed by Mousset. 6/10

Second season. Covid, lack of confidence. It doesn’t help when we abandon shape and endlessly resort to pumping it long. Confidence dwindles, and he misses some sitters. His off-field antics have become more apparent.

Third season. Lost a shit load of weight because of Covid, injuries, confidence etc.

Felt like. Obviously, he’s made some stupid decisions, but he’s swam against the tide for most of his time here.

Anyway, let’s hope we get 2 20+ strikers this season.

I watched his interview yesterday pre Cardiff game, nice hair cut, trimmed beard, spoke coherently, totally different person from a year ago!
He's obvioulsly being doing work on himself, with help from Heck'y & Jack Lester, he acknowledged that in the interview, and as Heck'y has said he's put a lot of work in on and off the pitch - credit to the guy and our management team.

It doesn't happen very often but on occasion I can be wrong. I'll happily hold my hands up here and says he's proved me and a load of others wrong. Before the season started I'd have happily sold him but now when I see him in the starting line up I have more confidence in us, specially when he's teamed with Ndiaye, look to be forming a nice partnership.

Wouldn't it have been better to take him off straight away after his injury on Tuesday?

I have forgotten when his court case is due for hearing. Help please !

Hope he's employed a strong legal defence team. Just our luck if he's sent down for six months (the highest penalty for the charge). A repeat of the Ched Evans' scenario ☹ ...

This! It comes down to the management and the player, somehow realising that he is prolly not the sharpest tool in the box. The staff know there is a decent player in there, and get both sides working on his week points. Credit to management for their patience working it out, and to him for listening and the hard work required to get it right.

I doubt that pleading you are just a bit dense will be a reasonable defence in a court of law
