OLLIE MCBURNIE

Made me laugh watching the highlights from a long throw they had FOUR men marking him pretty much all their big lads

I thought he was superb yesterday. I felt sorry for the two centre halves who got ragged all over by McBurnie and when he was bullying them, they had to contend with the quick feet and elusiveness of Ndiaye.

The huge upturn in the output of McBurnie is down to two things.

1. He is playing for a manager who seemingly has put a bit of faith in to him and turned him in to a bit of a reclamation project. His strength and conditioning is also much improved

2. He seems a lot more settled in his personal life. He has been seeing his bird for a while and he seems to have settled down a bit.

Couldn't agree more about him now playing for a manager who has faith in him. Credit also to McCall and particularly Lester who specialises in coaching the strikers.

You can tell that McBurnie is a player that needs that bit of confidence and a bit of edge. It's no coincidence that the crowd are mostly on his side now and he is banging them in. The fans were 100% right to be on his back about his form, of course, but it just goes to show how much of an impact the fans have with what goes off on the pitch.

I remember McBurnie being interviewed on Talksport when covid started when PL matches were due to be played behind closed doors.

He said he loves playing in front of a big crowd and thrives off it, he even admitted he likes receiving stick from the away fans because it makes him play better.
McBurnie admitted that he would personally find it difficult to play matches in empty stadiums as he thrives off banter and the buzz from a crowd.

I am buzzing about how much his performance has improved this year. Watching him least year, his performance was horrible. He would get into the box too early and be stood static, so get marked out. His headers were weak as piss. He always seemed to be in the wrong place, trying to catch up with play. He would get brought down by the slightest touch and knocked off the ball. He was an all-round awful footballer.
The fact that he has put all of this right is a credit to him.

I predicted it.

McBurnie's career was down the pan, for us he's consistently struggled at Championship level, so he was heading for a career in league 1.
I saw plenty of comments towards the end of last season that if anyone offered £5 to £10 million we should cut our losses and accept it.

So when anyone is faced with a likely demotion, reduction in fame and fortune, they tend to come out fighting.
This season McBurnie has played like he's on a mission to show he deserves a big contract if and when we return to the PL.

My issue is that once he's earned another 3 years of financial security, he'll lose some hunger and go back to being very ordinary again.

3. He isn`t injured anymore

I was definitely one of the one at the start of the season (e.g. Luton) who's heart sank when he was on the teamsheet - not because i didn`t want him to do well - but because he hadn`t shown us anything for 2 years which would indicate he could contribute. I always held out hope (as I do with Brewster) that the 20m player we signed is in there somewhere.

Hopefully he can get the hernia sorted during the WC, and come back firing just as he is now.

But Ollie, mate, cut out the stupid stuff - no one was in any danger on Saturday and you pick up a silly booking.

Get him a new contract ASAP
Don't fall into the trap, he's hungry because he's playing for a his livelihood, a new contract.

If we give him a new contract, he'll relax, lose his desire and won't be the same player.
Then we'll have certain posters (probably you) asking "why we gave this buffoon a new contract when it was so obvious he's not that good".

Regards McBurnine don't think a single PL club will be interested in signing him.
I know the Scots think he's terrible and don't want to see him anywhere near the national side.
So there's not that much urgency, better to wait to near the end of the season, see what division we are likely to be in and what other options are available.
By the way I'm a McBurnie fan and think he's doing brilliantly well but his style means he's only good when giving 100% and focussed.
We still need more quality up front, if we're returning to the PL.

They called this out on the commentary - he's the only one anticipating that Anel header is coming towards him and moving in the right direction. All the defenders are ball watching, he's on the front foot - resulting in that header.

Isnt his contract up end of season though. I admit I couldnt stand him he was absolutely useless for 2 years but he has come good in the end. Pity its took this long to see the striker we paid for. Still dont think he is PL form but he proved me wrong once.

I agree with you to an extent. The biggest difference for me in his game is his positioning and his movement. For example, a year ago, he would have been stood 20 yards away from where he should have been, for both goals on Saturday he was in exactly the right place at the right time, particularly his second where his run is to anticipate Baldock's shot being blocked and the ball coming back that way. When he wasn't scoring, it wasn't as if he was missing sitters, he wasn't even there to have the chances and would often be 20 yards too deep somewhere in midfield. Not only does he deserve a lot of credit for working on his game, but also the management and coaching staff, who must have been working with him to redefine his role in the team and where they want him to play to the best effect.

His gangly style is not easy on the eye, but it's effective and his control is underrated.

Of course there are other factors, the biggest being his continual injury problems, which has meant he's not really had a good run in the team since 2019. Hopefully that's behind him now and he can stay fit and playing.

Like most though, I do wish he'd not get involved when he doesn't need to and get himself booked.

Yes his contract finishes at the end of the season.
No PL club will show any interest but there should now be plenty of interest amongst Championship teams, you would think especially Swansea.

If we're in the Championship, we'll need to make cut backs, so there's a chance we could lose him as he'll want a good salary and he might prefer a return to South Wales. However if we're promoted then we will be comfortably the front runners to keep him as we can blow any counter offers out of the water.
Also we would be the only opportunity for OMc to play some more games at PL level.

We might have an option for a 5th year perhaps.

Either way form he's in he would be one to offer a new one if he carries on like this.

So whats the plan then ?

Just let his contract run out ?
