You had your chance BT

Not wanting this thread to become focused on Naysmith who was so slow that milk turned faster, so to be fair all the journeymen brought in around the Robson era were all looking for the last big paycheque and were shite in varying degrees. The wages we payed BT and the rest of that crowd could have bought a very decent set of championship players who with the products from the youth set up would have set us up for years and who knows bounced us back into the premiership.

Can't really comment on the BT red as i've not seen it yet. If it was a 50/50 as those that have actually seen it have claimed, then you have to have some sympathy. If he doesn't go for it he's going to get called for not getting stuck in, if he goes for it he risks the wrath of a pedantic ref.

Let's hope WW can draw at the rust bucket, we will not have a striker left for the play offs at this rate. I never rated BT 1st time round thought him an idle tosser, now I just think he is a complete tosser.
And where are they who a few days ago were saying keep the thieving nancy boy?

We've paid his wages for 2/3rds of a season and he's had our pants down again. And in a recent poll, many wanted to give him another contract next season. Unbelievable.
Just shows how desperate our fans are. Obviously and rightly they have no faith in Wilson or the scouts or the club, to find a decent striker, so cling to the illusion that that lazy cunt may come good.

No the fact is it was a 2 footed scythe , an utterly pointless , needless foul in the midfield. He is an utter prick.
One of theirs should have gone for a similar assault on Williamson, the ref showed what a twat he was by yellowing the Exeter man.

It was a two footed tackle. By the laws of the game that is a red card. Fact.
I though you also had to have both feet leave the ground for it to be an instant red?
Looked harsh to me and like others said he let a clear tackle from behind our player that was also late go with a yellow.

Would like to see a replay of this, but had a pretty decent view at the time and thought the red harsh. Clearly was going for a 50/50, and looked like he got some of the ball.

There was a very similar challenge on Willo 2nd half that only got a yellow - DW had a go at the 4th official asking what the difference was.
DW's assessment of the sending off "There was surprise all round when James Beattie was sent off. It was a very committed tackle and you want to see that kind of commitment from your players. James has taken the ball clean as a whistle and their lad had kicked him - I cannot understand it.

Both feet were off the ground, yes he played the ball, but it was a stupid challenge - surely he knew jumping in like that he gave the ref a chance to interpret it as a red card challenge. Their player's challenge late on was just as bad but it seems the current reffing 'fad' is to red card challenges with two feet.

don't forget who signed him, dear old danny, his signings have been rubbish, beattie, hill,o'halloran and porter a waste of time, the only signings he made that were any good were phillips /clarke

I'm concered too. McDonald has been very good though fella. But he must do better with future signings.

Totally, right heap of shit that MacDonald lad.

Given he's only ever played him when it's been an absolute necessity, coupled with the relative ambivalence of all his public utterances around the time of the signing, I'm not convinced DW wanted Beattie at all. A populist signing made to curry the favour of the fans - I can see KM's fingerprints all over this one.

But if there's any area of concern about DW, I would concede it would be his transfer dealings, though we have to be fair and see how he goes with a bigger kitty once the big earners are gone.

Agreed. We don't know how much we've been bottom fishing, and what the kitty will look like next season. Though if a signing isn't going to improve us, then don't bother. I found Williams' signing the most bizarre - he had a month to establish that he was at best, a bang average third division player - and he earned himself 2 years with that.

Totally agree with the first paragraph.

As for the second, I think his signings have been sound enough, judged as a whole. If a manager signs five players and a couple turn out to be hits, that's good in my eyes. Even Bassett and Warnock - the most successful managers in my lifetime - have signed plenty of comedians. Goes with the territory.

People say Robbo signed good players. So would I have done with that sort of cash. We're back in Poundland these days. Win some, lose some.

Got to disagree on both counts JD. I can't see how we can judge his signing record as other than poor so far. And one hit out of however many is far too low given the rebuilding job coming up.

I think Flynn and LJF have been perfectly respectable signings. Porter hasn't shown enough, and like raul says, I think BT was a McCabe vanity act.

The loanees in the early season were top drawer, whereas Hill was ropey and Hoskins plain unlucky.

Given our budget I no longer expect signings to make an immediate impact. They should be fairly young and grow into good players. Unless McCabe feels benevolent, we need patience.

Actually, I like LJF. I forgot about him. I think players like Flynn will make us a third division team for longer than we'd like. Not enough trickery to compensate for lack of athleticism and pace. Ditto Williams and Porter. We were unlucky with Hoskins, granted. The loans have been both good and bad

Overall, a mixed bag. Thej jury is still out for me, but I'm nervous.

patience ................ I'm in my 50's my dad a lifelong Unitedite was 1 year old the last time we won anything of note, I wonder how many patient Blades who remember us winning a trophy are still alive ?

Hoskins looked to be a good signing he had a good record in this league.
The problem was he wasn't fit when he signed and then the double hernia you have to wonder if the medical staff slipped up on this one.

Understood, but what's the alternative? Shoes off and McCabe demands his money back? Then we're properly screwed....

Besides, a couple of good results and this discussion belongs to the bottom shelf of history.

I think utter prick is a bit harsh. But if its two footed he's off, and he should know it in todays non contact game.

Maybe so. But all i see him contributing in five or six months is two needless red cards. How much has he earned and why?
Cos he has done nothing to aid promotion for the team.

Hello is right...too footed lunge in an area where there was no danger...he could have pulled out of the tackle and didn't. reckless and dangerous and for someone of his experience,an absolute disgrace.

Can't really argue with the logic with that on the face of it. BUT should we not go up through the play offs, and with players legging it we may actually need him next season. Consider this a fit BT or Porter???? ok Bertie Blade or Porter.

Not seen it bart so am not commenting on the tackle.

Having now seen the replay, very much doubt Beattie will successfully appeal that suspension. He did get some of the ball, but it was fairly dangerous - deserved red.

There's plenty with legs, its just finding the one. Its not that simple.

Wouldn't you rather try that than an ageing pro who's very well paid, hasn't scored for 2 years, can't stay on the pitch whenever he's started, and can't hit a bull's ass with a banjo for us?

I'm mistified that anyone would be contemplating giving him another contract.
