Why have clubs never thought of Solar panels on stand roofs?

Going by Elon Musk's estimations of how much electricity they can produce given the space, could easily make stadiums completely carbon free

I think in the uk there are a few issues and these are only my assumptions from what I’ve seen elsewhere:
  • amount of sunlight v the number of panels needed v cost outlay. Which leads to the next point
  • storage, given the amount of energy and daylight in winter and that football is not played during summer months when days are longer it seems that we’d need to store a lot of energy from the close season to use at other times of the year. So we’d need a huge solar array and battery storage to get good use during the season (for example during winter months when we use more power and lights)
  • roof designs, might be a simple one to resolve but engineering assessments would be needed to check that current roof spaces could safely hold additional weight of solar panels

I can understand that electricity costs for the floodlights have risen dramatically.

But the talk of a climate "crisis" or "emergency" is surely based more on emotion than science.
When I hear people say the words 'Crisis' or 'Emergency' after the word climate, I want to punch them squarely in the gob!

Not sure that the TV people would be on board, what with the early kick offs that Sky and BT put out clashing with these hypothetical 1pms. I doubt 11am early kick offs would be very well received to accommodate either and empty grounds won't look great on TV.

The floodlights only get put on once every 2 weeks for about 3 hours between October and probably February/March. I've got no idea how much they cost to run but it's not like they're on permanently.

For the many clubs who are and have been financially mismanaged, I think the floodlight costs are the least of their worries, particularly if Peter Ridsdale knows the pin to the company credit card.

Plenty of pig fans can use fart power for the floodlight. They talk a lot of shit so that will be perfect for wendy.

However, the moving to 1pm would immediately circumvent that inconvenient "can't show matches live at 3pm Saturday" rule and be very tempting for those good chaps at Sky etc. who could then whack another game or two out live to the financial benefit of the already wealthy.
Would help if Sky stopped shifting Weekend day time games to Monday night and Friday night etc etc.

Hoping this spells the end for those bloody pre-match light shows.

All the money football clubs make and pay their players yet they’re on about making kick off times earlier to accommodate the rising energy bills? How’s about fuck off and get the cunt played at a normal time, you make enough money to pay loads of footballers never mind one or an energy bill.

They need to stop spoiling the game for everybody even more than they already have done, what a joke this country really is, there’s all sorts that can be done as previous posters have said yet they go for possibly the worst option, no shock there then.

I can't be the only one who has noticed the lights have been on for every home game this season as is normal practice. If they're on pre 15.00 in August and September they sure as eggs is eggs be on pre 13.00 Oct through May.

Most of winter period gone because of that shitty World Cup who would fuck that bollox off and continue regular season as per normal

SUFC did put in for planning permission to put solar panels on the stand roofs a few years back when they were on about increasing the capacity on the kop and south stand.

So for the many fans who go straight home after the match will now be home at 4pm ish to put their heating and lights and tv on instead of 7pm ish - therefore using more electric at home, seems to make lots of sense😳
But then the extra costs are borne by 30,000 individuals instead of all being lumped onto 1 football club 🙂

I appreciate that there is a climate change narrative that is being followed and we also have very high energy costs… but the best that clubs can do is move Saturday games 2 hours earlier… which will mean some very early starts for fans going to some games and of course alternative transport methods as well.

I don’t know the percentage of games played midweek - but Friday and Monday night games should go immediately as they can be played on a Saturday.
It’ll also mean people are in their own homes for longer when it’s dark. So again, it’s bigger businesses passing the cost on to individuals.

All for it ........ means I don't have time to take the wife shopping on Saturday morning.
