That's why Vladimir Putin locks people up for 15 years for showing dissent.
All these folk venting their spleens about the Queen, if we had Vlad. as our 'ruler' we would have no such choice, or freedom.

I sometimes think we take our freedoms for granted, far too easily.
In principle I agree. I differ in that I don't see the Queen as our ruler or the giver of those freedoms.
In fact the notion that those freedoms can be given or allowed by someone born into the position seems almost contradictory.
Our rights and freedoms have been hard fought for by many people over many decades and should be cherished and expanded.

Hi all, I've busy working and not had access to any news for the past day. Have I missed something?

Yes, that's a very good point. Under a republic, the country is subjected to whims of the sitting president, who can do things constitutionally that are very hard to undo.

I used to be an ardent republican myself, but as my dad used to say to me many times as a kid, "If tha dunt know how it works, then bloody well leave it alooan".
We do not actually need to ‘get rid’ of the monarchy.
It is not a matter of this lot or a president. (In actual fact if you look at the way some of our PMs have acted they believe that are presidents anyway.)
We simply make sure this royal house, or what is now politely or is it politically called Windsor, opt out of the vastly inflated soap opera they inhabit, give us back what is ours, take a back seat well out of the way and the limelight, behave themselves and follow the far better examples of the royal families in such backward countries as Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden.

I don’t believe they seek the limelight

Are night clubs closing this weekend? Are all concerts postponed? Are cinemas closing?

Government said it was up to football's governing bodies. Absolutely no reason to cancel football this weekend. As others have pointed out, there's no precedent. It's bollocks.

EFL - virtue-signaling wankers
No the Government advised that they postpone but it was up to the sports governing bodies to decide

"I think the Queen would want us all to live the way she did, with free public housing, basic universal income, and full government health care.
Not today if you look between all the BBC stuff for the Queen North Korea have just declared themselves a Nuclear Power Enabled country and passed a law. Oh lets celebrate a madman has got his finger firmly on the red button now.
At least that madman is honest about having the bomb. On the other hand the Israelis lie about theirs, unless of course they have actually mislaid it.

Public holiday coming up for the funeral. Therefore it will be held on a Friday, or a Monday, because that causes less disruption for commerce and manufacturing.
The country cannot afford to mess with banking, finance and people who make stuff!

That how important sporting events are seen to be?

Next weekend likely to be off due to police issues apparently
I really hope so, that gives us three weeks to get players back, I'm looking at this solely from a United perspective as this is the United forum of course! Saying that I've given my two pennyworths worth on the Royals too!

I know cancelled fixtures means more schedule congestion later in the season but we've got a big squad to cope with it, many others won't and it plays into our hands, but also into other big squads it must be said. Saying that, as ours is down to the bear bones now, hopefully when it becomes really congested then we'll be in a better position than we are now squad wise.

How long will this over reaction last and when can we have our game back. Will Swansea and Preston games go as well. Absolute joke of a decision.

I was ambivalent to whether games wwnt ahead or not.

Find it odd, however, how many people despite their legitimate views and opinions, can't grasp the magnitude of the event in historic terms and why plenty will prefer to pay their respects.

Pubs are still open everything other than sports are still open. Zero logic. I could understand for the funeral policing reasons, although even then still annoyed, but this is a joke.

So many reasons why it’s in the best interests for football to go ahead this weekend. Mind-boggling decision from the EFL.

If our head of state actually helped run the state, or positively influenced it, then maybe.

Waving at people and occupying prime real estate don't really do it for
Only have to look on here yesterday at the abuse from certain posters aimed at the Queen and then to other posters who differed.

Yeah, come to think of it, maybe football crowds are a bit too immature to stand silent in respect for 2 minutes. They’ve already dumbed down marks of respect for football crowds, with the awful minute’s applause.

I know just what he means. I was in the car when I heard and I'd just popped a Maynard's wine gum into my mouth. It just didn't seem right. But I'm sure Her Majesty wouldn't have wanted me to spit it out of the car window in the M42. I did the only thing possible. I ate it.

We can postpone one game I suppose but let's not get too soppy. As Monty Python said, She's a good Sheila and not at all stuck up.
could’ve wrapped it in a paper towel 🙄

Respect the decision but can't help but feel it's a missed opportunity for not just football, but the whole of sport that was due over the weekend, to demonstrate respect collectively. I also can't help thinking that her view, given what I've seen of her over the last five decades or so, would have been "carry on".

It's a Sheffield United thing, when things are going well, things completely out of our control conspire against us, only time will tell whether this will affect us adversely.
It is my personal opinion, and I don't expect everyone to agree with me, but I think cancelation of sporting events is the right thing to do, I'm not a particularly royalist person, but this lady, our queen has spent her entire life in service of the country that I love, and I would like to pay my respect and give thanks for all her hard work.
I may not be a royalist but I love history, especially British history, and I'm witnessing British history right in front of me on my tv screen.
In my opinion although its unfortunate I believe its right

All grassroots football including kids called off too. This means AFC Newbury under-11s trip tricky early morning away trip to Reading on Sunday is postponed. (My 10yo is the keeper.) So I get a lie in. Bring it on! Or rather off.

The options were

1. Millions across the country openly paying respects to the head of the state before we play our national game

2. Millions of people sat watching some shit on Netflix not giving the Queen a 2nd thought

The governing bodies went for the second option
