How quiet was the Kop

Personally, l don’t know anyone who thinks it’s “brilliant”. It’s Garyoke being out of touch and has been going on too long. Never used to happen until he decided to Maggiemay it. The dick.
Alright. Do you sing it? I do. And I know it will look and sound cringeworthy to any away fans in the ground and to any other fans watching on tele. I'm making a simple point - the nature of football fandom means that fans think what the fans of the other team are doing is cringeworthy.

Cringeworthyness is subjective.

My simple point was that the claim that “we think it’s brilliant” is a nonsense. It’s sung because it’s our song. It would be sung, as it is at away games, without the need for a recorded intro. That’s the bit that’s cringeworthy.

I know, I'm going to agree with you, my choice of "brilliant" wasn't perfect. Singing it is brilliant, but the home match orchestration has cringe elements.

But, even without the orchestration, away fans would think it's cringeworthy, because their job is to think everything the other fans do is cringeworthy.

If you want singing throughout the game, the atmosphere has to be “manufactured”. If you want spontaneity then you have to accept that during periods when the game is dull, or the opposition gets gifted a goal, or we’re losing, the crowd is going to go quiet.

It’s got nothing to do with whether the opposition fans think it’s cringeworthy, it’s a matter of what proportion of OUR supporters would prefer a manufactured atmosphere and what proportion prefer spontaneity. And if you prefer the latter, you can’t complain when the crowd goes quiet. If you want the former, then it’s down to the fans to organise it and get a drummer or whatever.

I would dare to say that nobody would be up for organising things because people are just to fussed about having a few pints before the game. How do the palace fans do it, or any club in Germany??

I’ve no idea tbh.

From my limited experience of going to games in Germany, it is greatly organised, but often made up of separate ultras groups.

Are we above a drum? What makes us different

I might get shot down by others for this but having a drum screams tinpot lower league fans to me. Something you’d expect at Chesterfield, Accrington etc.

At uni one of our lot was a Huddersfield fan amongst Blades, Leeds, Villa, Forest etc. We always ripped into them for being a ‘drum club’.

And as much as it’s great, there is often no relation to what is happening off the pitch to what is happening on it.

If only someone had suggested a singing section….. maybe on the BLUT

I think a concerted effort for people to sit on G&H, who want to improve the atmosphere, would result in a better outcome. That to and fro with the away fans would add to the atmosphere more easily than it would from the Kop.

Of course it’d have to be entirely fan led, as there’s no way the club would back it given the history here.

As a season ticket holder on H, it can be really good. Usually the more high profile games and when things get ‘tasty’. But it was quiet mid week.

I think it needs to be done by a group of mates rather than an individual. The sort of group most people have when they’re young, before marriage, kids etc, where a load of you travel to away games together and sit together at home games, so you get 15-20 people starting the songs. Trying to organise a bunch of random internet introverts was always going to be difficult.

It is 2022 now, and this is what football has evolved into. It is a different experience to the 60s & 70s, better in some ways, worse in others, but the demographic of people attending has changed and it is what it is. Folks who don't like it should maybe think about building a time machine.

Away fans at The Lane find it incredibly cringeworthy that that our "anthem" requires the DJ to play an old record over the PA to get it all started.
Do they? I've never heard away fans say that. Maybe I should try speaking to more away fans rather than just punching them in the kidneys?

Back in the day when I was within range of the back of the kop, before I got too fat to go up and down all those steps, there'd seem to be groups of mates stood up gathered at the back of the gangways pissed up and all...... yet they'd barely bother to start chants etc. If it's not on those lads to get things going then who is it on..... its bizarre, no one seems all that bothered. We just moan about it and that's as far as it goes

I used to get excited about the crowd when I was about nine…Just watch the fucking game.

9 times out of 10 the away crowd is far more vociferous than that of the home crowd…Just a fact really. How about giving Sunderland plaudits for getting behind their team till the end. Much the same as the Blade do on the road.

There is nothing more cringe than Garyoke's introduction to the GCB butty music along the lines of:
"come one blades we are live on telly in front of billions at the oldest professsional football ground in the world TM;
Sing loud, sing proud etc."
Makes me want to puke. Its massively embarrasing.

Might be in a minority but I approve of Garyoke giving us the GCB cue - it helps synchronise it 😂 ... would be all over the place if not

I have more issue with him not knowing the players names. Khadra came on the other night to silence because Gaz was too useless to announce him even though he was staring at the number 11 on his shirt.....

A few day's later was better against Blackburn was better bash got sent off.
Blackburn last season was great to .

This is universally true and does not excuse our home crowd from being shit

We all know we need safe standing, possibly with a singing section too for those that want to chant all game like I do. Aside of that the only thing we can do is sing regardless. It is early days in the season though and it's not going to seem like huge games three or four games into the season.
