Player of the Season

As an exile I get to see hardly any of United over the season other than what Bladesplayer provides. For me, we have 3 outstanding candidates; Collins, McDonald and Evans. Honourable mentions probably go to Lowton and Maguire.

I'm interested to know other's thoughts as to which of these players has contributed to our relative success most this season?

Ched to win it from Collins who's clear in second in front of KMac who's ahead of Quinn.

The young player of the year has to be Lowton from McGuire. In any other year McGuire would have won it easily, but Lowton is so much of what's good about United this season.

Anyway, my vote would be same now as it was then, McDonald. The games before he was fully fit and whilst he's been injured recently have been of a completely different style to those when he has been at his best.
As mentioned, honourable mentions to a few others but the whole of our style now revolves around him.

My only question about McDonald is, despite his obvious ability, he hasn't been a player all season. He's probably the player we miss most when he's not available but Collins and Ched have almost (after Ched's early injury) been ever-present.

MacDonald only missed 1 league game before signing for us.

I still stick by Ched for my POTY, but Collins runs a close second.

Quinny, MacDonald and Lowton have all had major roles in our progression in the league.
As have Creswell and Doyle.

I also think we looked better going forward with LJF in the team.... (albeit his defensive left a lot to be desired).

Collins for me. He bears absolutely no resemblance at all to the Collins of last season and has helped 19 year old Harry enormously.

Right - so was he as bad as suggested last season? Is it just the opposition that makes him look better or has DW brought something good out of him? Similar for Doyle I guess although he'll probably become the scapegoat without Monty to take that mantle.

Also - probably Willo should be getting an honourable mention with 9 goals from midfield!

Ched has been head & shoulders above most in the Division - so him 1st & Collins 2nd for me.

Just bumped the other thread up.

I voted for Collins, as he has been rock solid this year and so has the team. I think a large part of our success has been down to him keeping a young back 4 together (evidenced by Oldham). However, we'd be nowhere without Ched's goals. Without K Mac and Collins, we looked like the 3rd division Arsenal (i.e. being dragged kicking and screaming by the 3rd divisions Van Persie). Ched is absolutely on fire and looks out of place in this division. It is really tight for me between these two.

I think K Mac is 3rd, not far behind the top 2 (kind of like comparing Beckenbauer to Maradonna and Pele ). We play completely differently with him in the team. I've not seen SUFC control games since .... well erm, ever, like they do with him in the team. His range of passing is brilliant and he is so calm and composed. Always an option, always finding a red and white shirt and always making space. Class act. We really missed him recently.

Lowton should be given a big shout. His attacking threat from RB has been instrumental. At this level wingers often don't track back (also why LJF does well going forward) and Lowton has taken advantage of that. He links really well Williamson (who should be noted for his goals). Doyle has been an unsung hero and Maguire has done brilliantly considering the circumstances.

I had a season ticket when Spackers was in charge. I really enjoyed that period .... up until January. We played some decent stuff, but didn't control games in the same way we are doing now. We had 2 very good wing backs that were creative and could cross (especially Borbokis), attacking options in midfield (Whitehouse) and 2 and a half very good strikers (Taylor was good when he could be arsed). I think we had some great attacking options back then and real quality (Fjortoft, Quinn, Vas, McGraph, Deane and Fjortoft were Premiership quality) but we played differently to know. I started watching United in the early 90's and have not seen a central midfielder that controls the game, passed the ball and makes space as well as McDonald does.

Please don't allow me to shatter any fond memories, but Spackman did not put the team together. Like it or not, Charles Green scouted and signed Borbokis and Dellas. Spackman had never heard of them!

Spackman was a dreadful manager. His subsequent stints at Barnsley and Millwall were short and anything but sweet. He didn't last a full season at any of his three clubs and has never been asked to manage since.

Yes, Sitwell. It was a big error by Kendall to replace a sublime string-puller in Cowans with an overweight, washed-up Spackman. We were never quite the same again.

They may have been expensively put together but if he was such a "dreadful manager" they would have flopped like Robson's expensive team did.

Exactly. I don't doubt that McDonald would probably have walked into that team (you know, if he hadn't been a little kid at the time) but those days were the days before I had internet and turning up first day of the season I couldn't believe what had happened to my team - especially the two full backs. Whatever happened to Wayne Quinn afterwards I'll never understand!

Thats right. The odious thommo, with his dark glasses on end of season video on about being a star of stage n screen all of a sudden...oddball..i recall the thumping by wba at lane he played chris wilder in midfield. he almost ruined our last div 3 promo too after partnering stan towards the end of the season..like a tortoise on depixol injections....
