Picture the scenario: after months and months of lockdown, and stuck at WFH in Sheffield, the Marketing Department were invited over to sunny Italy to deal directly with our new kit designers. Reading our regular kit threads over the years, they knew what we wanted - non-template and bespoke. Bespoke and Unique! That's all they chatted about on the flight over.
A little shy and all huddled together, they were ushered into the 'Design Space' where very cool Italian designers were welcoming them to sit down on some inflatable cushions.
Then out came the trolley, full of Prosecco and Birra Moretti. On the table opposite there was every kind of design tool - gleaming Macs, Crayons, Oil Paint and hundreds of sheets of High Quality hand-made Italian Paper.
At first it was a little slow, but then the music started. They drank some wine, they drank beer, they sang, they danced and in a whirl of chalk cloud and paint spray, they also designed.
The next day, they woke up - the design room was empty. Except for empty bottles, torn sheets of paper and paint all over the walls. Then their driver entered and escorted them back to the airport. On the flight home all was silence, none of them could remember much of the previous day - apart from a loud chanting of "Bespoke! Bespoke! Bespoke!" The trip was never mentioned again.
About 4 weeks ago, the shirts arrived. One box was opened.
They are still sat there in the office. Every morning the Marketing Team just stand there - staring at those hundreds and hundreds of unopened boxes. Staring at each other. WTF have we done? WTF can we do? We can't release these, we will get torn apart. They are all currently looking for new jobs, in the hope they will be long gone before the Season starts.
