Tuesday's defence

How about playing Taylor in the middle? His heading is generally good. I'd sooner play a natural defender in the middle and make do with someone like Cresswell at full-back again than gamble with a non-defender in the heart of the defence.

Cresswell, Ertl, Taylor, Williams - that defence has automatic promotion written all over it.

You say that we shouldn't play non-defenders in the heart of the back four then suggest Ertl...

Actually, why not in that case go 3-4-3? We're not going to win this by keeping a clean sheet, so let's just have an extra person up front (Hoskins) and put faith in us scoring more than them?

I'd go with that. Just instruct doyle to drop very deep.

Conneely, Ertl, Kennedy, Williams

Looks like Collins isnt ready to return to action til the end of the week but Williams is back in training.

Without entering the loan market that back four picks itself imo.

It's a massive blow if Collins isn't playing. I would not feel confident at all with that defence. Need to get a loanee in sharpish

** Ollessendro groans ** Not a single member of the regular back 4 available. Ouch.

If Collins cannot play, then we are in big trouble. If he cannot play then I would go with:

Conneely Ertl Taylor Williams

But fuck me that does not give me confidence. If Collins can play, then put Taylor left back and keep it the same. He could probably just about hold the defence together.

We should start with Quinn, Willo, Flynn, Ched and Hoskins and look to outscore them.

*Ollessendro skulks off and sticks £20 on Walsall to win - at 14/5**

Barlow interview on tinernet. Says JFL is unknown. Waiting for scan. Collins is 'highly unlikely' to be back until before end of week. 'Williams is training'. They are also 'looking to bring someone in'

Two options.

1) Play the kids. They may make a mistake and be prone to naive play and we'll most probably concede a goal or two.

2) Bring in a loanee. Who wont know those around him, be unfamilier with defensive drills and set piece marking and we'll probably concede a goal or two.

Both situations are not ideal, but at least with option 1 there are long term gains.

Don't agree,

I like the though of the 3-4-3.

If we lose with that formation it won't be as damaging to confidence if we go there with a patched up back four/five and lose. We can at least say we've gone for it.

As I said elsewhere - accept the probability of a defeat tomorrow and move on. We'll be in much better shape for Saturday.

All the options offer a marked lack of height.
If I was Dean Smith I would be looking to get plenty of crosses into the box to challenge the back two.

Looks a dead cert that we will gift them a goal or two with so much inexperience and rustiness in the available players.

It's not as though this is nothing new - Collins himslef made his debut at the Sty in the Tonge / Akinbiyi match.
Andrew Davies was drafted in and thrust into a centre back pairing as he arrived from Stoke on a short term loan.

Maybe DW has something up his sleeve and has asked Uncle Holloway if he has any spare defenders he can help us out with.
Maybe David Wier is going to guest for a one off - who knows?
The suspenders will be released at approx 19:15 Tuesday night.

Kennedy isn't playing judging by his last couple of tweets.

#gutted

And

Not injured btw

Real surprise if he's not even trusted to be on the bench. It may mean we've been able to get someone experienced in on loan. Or that we're playing Cressy at centre half...

I'd like to see the youngsters get a chance-this is just the opportunity to give them a go, it's what they work hard for in the youth set up and the reserves. To not give them a chance would be a bit of a blow to them, but then again, I'm sure they are not being over looked and if a loanee is brought in, it's what the coaching staff think is for the best.

For me, Conneely, Ertl, Kennedy, Taylor

Geez, we are looking at a Vauxhall conference defence tonight.

Snatch a point and let's move on. If we can get a point, then i'll be over the moon. We can take confidence into the weekend and with the normal back 4 available (pretty much) and hopefully K Mac, then we can go to Griffin Park and take all 3 points.

I'd go with

Simonsen

Kennedy Taylor

Ertl

Flynn Doyle Williamson Quinn

Hoskins Evans Cresswell

In an ambitious 2-1-4-3 formation. If it works for Barcelona...

Kennedy not involved tonight apparantly

Monty looks like being back tonight

Williams came through a training session yesterday. However, club waiting this morning for any reaction to that.

Whoever we go with it looks as though it could be a very exciting game. Our team may feel not much pressure and it could turn out great?

We have a big attacking threat for League 1, and I'm just hoping it's one of those games where we score more than the opposition !

Perhaps just outscore the opposition tonight then?

What worries me is that Walsall are one of the very few sides that really got at us at the Lane. We're lucky they backed off at 2-0 and the changes Wilson made turned the game. We ended up overrunning them but I haven't forgotten how well they started

The only thing that would worry me about a 3-4-3 would be Quinn tracking back to help, seems to have a tendency to not do so, and that's when we play a flat back 4.

If anything I'd go for a 3-5-2 and have Doyle sitting infront of the back 3 being the protector with Quinn, Willo, Flynn and one other (possibly Monty if fit although I'd be tempted to play Cresswell in the middle tbh)

Interesting: do we go for experience, yet risk injury? Or do we put in some youth and risk getting mullered? Monty and Williams should not play (not ready, way short of fitness and risking injury) yet facing a big, strong and experienced Walsall front line perhaps it would not be wise to give 2 young lads their first senior starts. Perhaps just one of them? I think Wilson could possibly risk it and not feel the wrath. That said, we cannot really afford to lose 3 out of the last 4 games.

We still have enough quality to score a few. We just need to be clinical, patient and stay calm.

"Chris Morgan is still some distance from returning to first team action"

He is not coming back for goodness sake.
