Didn't know he took their penalties, that does put his stats into context. I take it you're very much not sold on this one, Bob?
🤣 I just don’t get the excitement and “must sign” clammer. I keep asking where it comes from but no one’s even made me slightly hope this is confirmed.

I’m a struggling derby team he only scored one less goal than MGW so he’s clearly a goal threat and got 5 assists. I’m not comparing him to Gibbs white, my point is that he knows where the back of the net is and it could help replace some of MGWs goals
Derby weren’t struggling, the point deduction took them down but they were clearly performing as a higher mid table side all season and nearly half his goals were pens.
Clearly a goal threat is a huge reach, he’s never scored more than 10 including pens.

How many non penalty goals did Billy score?

Last season? 3 penalties so 12 excluding them I think?
Bit unfair comparison as Lawrence isn’t a forward and Billy was either a sub or subbed a lot. He was also 35.

Just looked, scored 3, missed one. Thought it was more than that!

Just looked at TL penalty stats, looks like he’s on taken them this season for Derby. Scored 4/4.
Career record is 8/9.

Plumped up his record last season though and he only got 7 from open play in a decent mid table side.

They'd have been 17th without the points deductions, they were a poor midtable side
Apologies I mixed up GF with points so you’re quite right. Still don’t think they were a “struggling side”. If they hadn’t been down before the end of the season another few points would have pushed them further up.

Lawrence isn't a striker though, he's a number 10 style "forward"....his assist stats are more what I am interested in.
Agreed it’s just that someone put up his goals as a quality we’re lacking and that he’d help resolve. His goal record isn’t great and even less so if you remove pens but it’s better than his assists. 5 for last season, which I think puts him outside the top 30 Championship players.
This is why I keep asking more about his qualities than his stats because there’s nothing in them to excite me. Again, I hope if we sign him he finds some consistency and he’s creating loads of chances that our forwards are burying, I just don’t see much sign of it in what I know right now. Others appear more convinced but don’t seem to be able to say why?

If you look at his goal scoring history from last season and his career as a whole he's scored 9 or 10 in three of his total seasons including last season. In the other seasons he's scoring 6 as a rule. He played 30 games last season and scored 9 goals so even with the odd penalty in the mix, 1 in 3 is a cracking ratio for an attacking mid in an average team that would have finished 17th without the points deduction. With our budget being what it is, we'd be fools not to be interested and let him sign for a rival to boot.

Jed Wallace was an alternative and someone who has a similar scoring record, but Albion pushed the boat out to sign him by all accounts and offered big money, I would imagine more than what we're offering for Lawrence because Derby cannot offer championship football whereas Millwall could for Wallace and Wallace is a London lad and from a family perspective I would imagine would have wanted to stay but he's moved because he cannot turn down that sort of money. Lawrence won't have to move and he's not coming from a London club, nor is Lawrence a London lad so what I'm saying here is that we don't have to break the bank to persuade him to leave his current club. All of the above applies to John Swift in terms of how much Albion would have to spend on wages for Swift.

If he plays on the left he'd be a better option than Fleck who turned up about twice last season. Suspect he plays a bit further forward though. Is Doyle direct competition for Norwood or could we accommodate both in the team?

It reminds me of the movie 'Moneyball.'
We can't replace MGW, he's a £25m player. But we might be able to replace his contribution "in the aggregate." If Lawrence and a couple of other new additions, plus a fully fit Brewster can replace some of his goals and we can tighten up at the back then maybe we have half a shot.

Seems we're trying to do what I'd also do - sign Lawrence but not rely on him as our sole option of that type

2 or 3 players between them is our best bet of replacing MGW

Lawrence / Khadra / Ndiaye would be good

Has it been clarified that Lawrence isn't "the player that tore us apart last season" that NH is referring to?
