Sheffield is unfashionable. Hardly a great pull for a player. I don't think we throw cash at players or agents either, like some. They're also likely to be very unimpressed by our state of the art (circa 1993) training centre if they come for a look around.
How come Sheffield comes out on top of students that stay and make Sheffield their home, 103 seconds of magic is spot on with his comment. Sheffielders are mostly glass half full people who live in their little corners of the city and moan.

Defence ok
Midfield need 3 good players to come in
Att need a proper good GOALSCORER

Because they've lived here and there is lots of stuff aimed at students? Both unis have good reputations.

I went to uni in Hull, the then second most popular city for students. It was a shithole, largely, but had lots of cheap students nights and cheap to live.

A footballer on £1 million a year doesn't really care about any of that.

We're vastly poor for clothes shopping
We're poor for trendy restaurants
We're poor for expensive toys shopping
We're poor for infrastructure
We have an airport (ish) that hardly goes anywhere
We're poor for pretty much most things a footballer would want

A footballer might come to look round Sheffield. See the train station. Gets taken up to Shirecliffe to see the leaky roof. Gets take down to the ground. May even see the appalling non-event centre. Not exactly attractive stuff is it. Un less he wants to buy spice.

Very true. The stat around highest student retention in England always gets trotted out. With respect to hospitals and universities most people I meet love Sheffield partly for the reasons locals (including me) knock it down (feels like a lot of little villages, feels small despite being big, really diverse, nice places to eat and drink etc, cheaper than other equivalent cities).

We are behind on some infestructure and funding, especially in some areas where the council clearly can't be arsed to distribute budgets equally but that's not really going to be that much of a concern to a Footballer.

While it was always going to be difficult to be thrown into the team and make an impact last season, I personally thought both Jebbison and Osula looked miles away from being good enough for a side aiming to be promoted from the Champ.
Whether either ever reach that level (or beyond it) remains to be seen but I think both would be better off going to L1 clubs next season to get some more game time and goals that playing bit parts for Utd.
Utd will certainly need one more quality addition up front if they're going to compete.
Spot on

Agree ,they looked absolute miles away but there is something there obviously .

Been said 100s of times - the owners will not inject the funds to pay for the quality we need . That ship has turbo charged away two seasons ago . They said as much - it’s not hard .

They don’t have the desire to invest .

Until we are sold we will mend and make do and Hecky will do a decent job I’m sure of it . Not blaming the owners , they don’t want and can’t put up .

As many have said - Sheffield and Utd are unfashionable

Well fk off

We have one of the best stadiums in the country - we have average attendances regularly close to 30k - we are more attractive than many - but we will not pay the money now to pull the players and that’s why we always struggle

We have never had anyone who has the money and the attitude to back us

Fact

Stop building your hopes up .

We’re all doomed

Doomed I tell ye

But then again we were doomed when Wilder bought second hand players to go up from league one to championship
An championship to premier
Then to stay in the premiership that first season

What a set of whingers

All our management & coaches have no idea what they’re doing , and as for our scouting set up, we’ll ??

We’d be far better off letting the know alls on this site fund & run the club

But would they ever come to a concensus

Probably not 🙄

Yeah probably illegals ... pity we can't look after our own first!

Sheffield has always been seen as an industrial centre (not so much now) Leeds has been a financial centre for banks etc it’s always been ‘going places’ the trouble is that it tries to think it’s as big as London or Manchester its not Peter Ribsdale thought Leeds United could compete but he condemned them to near on 20 years of depression.

Because most end up working in a bar,
Those with any sort of degree become social workers.

There's a whole array of working progress to go at

I've been shopping up in Leeds a couple of times recently, only a 55 min drive from where I live (Bawtry area).

I've grown up with Sheffield. Direct (but slow) trains from Retford. Meadowhall for shopping, Cineworld and obviously Sheff Utd... It's probably a 40/45 min drive from mine.
As a young adult, Sheffield was always the go-to spot for a 'big' night out.

Must say though, Leeds is streets ahead of Sheffield. Loads of easily accessible and cheap city centre parking and piles of really decent shops all within very close proximity. If you're a young person with lots of money then all of the shops (Louis Vuitton, Harvey Nichols, Gucci etc.) are there. But so is everything in between that & your standard high street stuff. It's great.
For drinking also, it offers far more than Sheff (unless you're a middle aged real enthusiast).

Sheffield is unfashionable for good reason...
as much as I do love it.
Yes but does Leeds cater for the Cyclists like Sheffield does ?
Leading Shops, nice bars and Cheap parking are all well and good, but have Leeds Council closed any roads off and installed those giant metal Bike things that nobody seems to use ? Also does Leeds have any Bus stops on roads that are closed off to all motor vehicles ?

I think that's a myth, might have been true along time ago but I'm pretty sure we are not top anymore, infact the survey I saw a couple of years ago we weren't even in the top 10.

A quick google search brings up a link which suggests Glasgow comes in first with Edinburgh, London, B'ham, Leeds, Sunderland, Cambridge, Newcastle, Norwich and Southampton coming in 10th spot. I'm sure we keep hold of our fair share but not as many as some people seem to make out..

Yes
Many stay, but it doesn't mean they are succesful people or a person of higher quality because they went to Uni

There are different types of students, those that come from families of high ranking business people, doctors, surgeons, dentists and people with shitloads of money.

These people have to succeed. After Uni, they're gone.

And the second type of student is at Uni for a bit of a laugh, they're quite clever, but they aren't really that bothered about success, they are rebellious, and a bit left wing and Liberal in their views.

After Uni, they get normal jobs and do nothing spectacular with their lives at all. They stay.

I take your points on some of the above Robbie, totally respect where you're coming from. However! I do think Sheffield has a lot to offer, for those that are from here and for those that come here. Students come to Sheffield because, contrary to what the reputation of Sheffield is as a dirty steel town etc, and/or possibly in the shadows of Leeds, people that I speak to who are not from Sheffield but live here or have visited here are very positive. Also, re your comments poor for clothing, poor for trendy restaurants etc, I think most people who like Sheffield like it because it is friendly as a city, in my view, it feels friendlier than walking around Leeds and Manchester, but it still retains an up and coming feel, there's been decent investment in the city centre in recent years also, you've got Meadowhall also of course, Centertainment, Crystal Peaks, numerous retail parks.

I'm no expert on restaurants here but whenever I go out I am never disappointed in food restaurants, there's four Michelen restaurants in Sheffield, four in Nottingham and seven in Leeds as a comparison of similar sized cities, although I should say that you'd expect Leeds to have more as it is a bigger city population wise by some distance.

Sheffield is known for how green it is, both inside the city and the countryside immediately around it, I think Sheffield has a recognition as the greenest city in Europe green space wise?

Another advantage Sheffield has is it's location in the centre of the country and obviously on the M1. This ties in to football also. I would say Sheffield is a good location for many footballers on that basis, granted if you're coming from down south then Nottingham is closer, but in my view footballers are only interested primarily in how much money the club is offering and the football side of things such as will they be in the first team, what's the ground like, what's the training ground like (granted we know that needs some work) and will the football club be successful in it's aims this season. I don't think footballers will be bothered about what the city centre is like as much as you think over the stuff I've just mentioned. There's enough to do in Sheffield for sure. It's not like Leeds, it never will be as trendy as Leeds, probably not as vibrant, but not far off, but it's got loads to offer for everyone in my view.

I am certainly not envious of Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham to be honest, they have their appeal, so does Sheffield. The main problem Sheffield has is Sheffield Wednesday, that brings down the reputation of the city somewhat ha ha!

I'm forever having to go to Manchester and Leeds for gigs cos no fucker comes to Sheffield any more. Now your average footballer won't care about that but it's indicative of the problems the city has as a whole.

Regards gigs and as much as I hate to say it I would include Nottingham in that as well.

Oh definitely mate, Rock City alone often has a better slate of upcoming gigs than the whole of Sheffield. It's like an alternate universe Leadmill, showing us what things could be like.

All fair points, but the discussion was around why Sheffield might not be a pull for footballers.

They (hopefully) don't care about real ale. Most young people couldn't give a damn about the countryside.

The things people like Ollie McBurnie or Ollie Burke (to use two terribly dressed examples) will want to do with their spare time is the kind of inane trendy shit which we just don't really have.

The problem isn't a choice of our management team are brilliant or they haven't a clue.
It's somewhere in between and I for one am not under any illusions as to the abilities of the coaching staff. Good blokes doing a good job.
But the recruitment side has been abysmal. I don't know which scouts are giving reports on potential buys but even I would put together a scouting list that would surpass what they have been doing for the last few years. Every club has some players for what ever reason it doesn't work out. But by Heck Stevie Wonder would see flaws in a players game faster than our scouts.

Brewster, Berge, Burke, Freeman, Mousset, etc.

I’m not so sure on that one uni of has a very good medical department and sure the very top top surgeons may go to specialist hospitals elsewhere but many of Sheffield’s GP’s will have been educated in the city

we really do lack a good outdoor city centre venue for the summer.

Yeah I've had a few steaks that tasted of Michelins in Sheffield 😉

As an expat (Sussex for 30 years) I can tell you that's the classic Sheffielder's view of how people see Sheffield. It might have been true in the 90s, these days plenty of outsiders see Sheffield as a cool, friendly and quite bohemian city, a hub of decent music and nightlife, and a great but affordable place for spending your student years. Also featuring a likeable accent!
I reckon that is bang on for students or folk fancying a city/ country break, "Chatsworth on the Friday, beers and a meal out on the Saturday".

Perhaps less appealing to millionaire twenty something footballers though.

Brewster will come good, as shown just before injury (hopefully).
Berge... We're hoping to get £20-30m for him this summer!
Burke; Wilder was desperate to give us some pace and he was all we could afford!
Freeman didn't play much tbf, then career seemingly ruined by injury.
Mousse helped us to 9th.

Okey dokey.
