I take your points on some of the above Robbie, totally respect where you're coming from. However! I do think Sheffield has a lot to offer, for those that are from here and for those that come here. Students come to Sheffield because, contrary to what the reputation of Sheffield is as a dirty steel town etc, and/or possibly in the shadows of Leeds, people that I speak to who are not from Sheffield but live here or have visited here are very positive. Also, re your comments poor for clothing, poor for trendy restaurants etc, I think most people who like Sheffield like it because it is friendly as a city, in my view, it feels friendlier than walking around Leeds and Manchester, but it still retains an up and coming feel, there's been decent investment in the city centre in recent years also, you've got Meadowhall also of course, Centertainment, Crystal Peaks, numerous retail parks.
I'm no expert on restaurants here but whenever I go out I am never disappointed in food restaurants, there's four Michelen restaurants in Sheffield, four in Nottingham and seven in Leeds as a comparison of similar sized cities, although I should say that you'd expect Leeds to have more as it is a bigger city population wise by some distance.
Sheffield is known for how green it is, both inside the city and the countryside immediately around it, I think Sheffield has a recognition as the greenest city in Europe green space wise?
Another advantage Sheffield has is it's location in the centre of the country and obviously on the M1. This ties in to football also. I would say Sheffield is a good location for many footballers on that basis, granted if you're coming from down south then Nottingham is closer, but in my view footballers are only interested primarily in how much money the club is offering and the football side of things such as will they be in the first team, what's the ground like, what's the training ground like (granted we know that needs some work) and will the football club be successful in it's aims this season. I don't think footballers will be bothered about what the city centre is like as much as you think over the stuff I've just mentioned. There's enough to do in Sheffield for sure. It's not like Leeds, it never will be as trendy as Leeds, probably not as vibrant, but not far off, but it's got loads to offer for everyone in my view.
I am certainly not envious of Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham to be honest, they have their appeal, so does Sheffield. The main problem Sheffield has is Sheffield Wednesday, that brings down the reputation of the city somewhat ha ha!
