Yup! I reply.

He goes onto say he is here for a day trip having bought his train ticket to London and hotel expecting the pigs to be at Wembley today..

I did laugh and did say that’ll learn ya..

Why do they behave like this?

One of the blokes I knock around with bought a Sheffield-London-Sheffield rail ticket ages ago for today. Cost him peanuts. His strategy was either go to Wembley for the SWFC play off final OR go to Lord's Cricket Ground for Middlesex v Durham & have a day out in the pavilion. Great plan.

I am not a Member of the MCC. As an organisation, they support a number of cricket initiatives that I think are quite progressive. But, at core, they are an elitist & reactionary organisation. I could not be a Member, because my Dad was not a Member.

I am, however, a Member of Middlesex County Cricket Club. Who play County Cricket at Lord's as tenants. A great sports club - own nothing, owe nothing. This 2022 season, my Membership of Middlesex allows me to watch every day of County Cricket at Lord's and Middlesex outgrounds. 4 Day, 50 over & T20. A season ticket if you like. Oh, and they throw two extra ones in. That "three season ticket package" cost me £47.20. It is the opposite of elitist. (As a comparison, my single "season ticket" at Yorkshire cost me £230). I've been trying a few award winning English Sparkling Wines recently. But, as a real ale & craft beer drinker, I love Champagne. Which of course is "naturally conditioned" in much the same way as Cask Beer.

No recommendations I'm afraid. I do find English Sparkling a little difficult to source. I tend to just grab what I can in Waitrose. Chapel Down & Nyetimber feature often. I must say, the "level of sophistication" I'm at means it's not worth paying a premium. I would like to try small, very independent English vineyards. But, that would require some effort on my part...

There are two new(ish) vineyards near where I used to live in Mereworth (pronounced Merry-worth) Between Tonbridge and Maidstone, it’s a beautiful part of the world. The vineyards replaced orchards, strawberry fields and hop gardens which over the years became less and less profitable.

To be fair to any Wednesday fans that did this, this was the last weekend of the cheap rail tickets. You could get a return to London for about £25 each, so was worth securing just in case and if not, having the day out.

Still it’s funny that most of them will have thought it was a done deal that they’d reach the final and wouldn’t have to spend a day being a tourist.
