The pitch is understandably unusually heavy and slippy at the moment and a number of players lost their footing in the first half against Forest, most notably Gibbs White. It looks to me as though the top layer of the pitch is becoming a problem. That being the case, why do they insist on continuing to water it before, during and after the game? With our players looking a bit leggy at the moment, if anything there is an argument for not having the surface as wet as usual.

I was at the Harrogate Town v Hartlepool match yesterday and noticed several players losing their footing - very similar to Friday night. The pitch was also watered at half time. I wonder if it's down to the type of boots some of the players wear these days? Not played for a long time so I don't know much about footballing footwear these days

Running about on wet turf does it no good at all. Overwatering weakens the grass in so much as the roots do not have to grow down to find water, and are therefore less well anchored.

There are now parts of both goal areas which are becoming mud patches because of it. There is another Desso pitch ( not as well installed ) in S6 which is a reyt mess. Lessons to be learned methinks.

Modern hybrid pitches (including desso) do not get 'heavy',the surface is actually bone hard & you struggle to get them to take a stud due to the construction of the upper levels- hence why players slip on the wet surface, pitches are watered before & during games to make them zippy for good passing football & to make it safer for players to slide, it's nothing to do with watering the grass per se, hope this helps

It's almost like they're trying to recreate the Stadium of Shite! 😵

Our pitch is getting a bit bare in the goalmouth and certain other areas though.

Just watched Man City v Man U and that pitch was pristine.

Taking into account we supposedly have the same quality pitch installation as all the top clubs (Desso) and have had/do have the money to maintain it due to our recent stint in the Premier League, what do you think accounts for the difference?

Like comparing a Ducati to a Lada

Bet Swillsborough pitch doesn't need watering very often 🤣

This

The ball would be very slow on these Desso's without the water.

It's a lot artificial and the pitches are 100 times better than before

For the less well informed amongst us, how so?
The Etihad update end of last year on pitch they're playing on this season..

"The new pitch will have the capacity to retain and recycle more than 200,000 litres of rain and pitch irrigation water - making it the first in the UK in terms of this type of pitch drainage system.

It will also incorporate an air vacuum system that can pull moisture out of the pitch against the force of gravity. "

I overheard someone sat behind me in the Upper Tier on Friday evening who was saying that the Desso needs to be re-laid every 5 years but due to COVID that's been put back to six years.

Put it ont gardening thread

Was just thinking that, I’m in need of some turf and wondering if Desso might be the way forward !
We‘ll know where to look if there’s a lawn size patch missing vs Middlesbrough

Wet pitches don’t make it harder to defend headers from corners.
