Clean Sheet Wes

Be interesting to see his number of saves made per 90 and the succesful save percentage.
He has benefitted from some very defensive team selections in the last few games and my instinct is that Wes doesnt have that much to do compared to other cahmpionship keepers.
Certainly last night we could have tried one less defender.
Johnstone of WBA is head and shoulders above the keeprs in this division.

Wes 16 apps, faces 2.8 shots on target per game, saves 77.8% of them

Johnstone 26 apps, faces 2.2 shots on target per game, saves 68.4% of them

Dropped. Qpr picked up David Marshall from Derby while Dieng was winning Afcon and he's kept the shirt.

Diengs 2 clean sheets in the group before stages for Senegal, before Mendy came back from COVID, were vital.

Just adding to what Panini says, this is Opta's "goals prevented" stat which takes the xG of shots on target faced (xGOT) for each keeper, and subtracts the number of actual goals conceded:

Wes is 6th in the league, or 5th if you choose to throw out Nathan Baxter who has only played 38% of the minutes for Hull this season. However, check the xGOT Conceded column - he's been really, really well protected. The next man up on the list, Grimshaw, has played slightly more but has faced over 9xGOT more than Foderingham. Wes is also the only keeper in the league who's played >50% of minutes and faced <50 shots on target.

So both things are true, really - he's playing excellently, and the defence has been really, really good for the last few months (when he became the starter, and we switched to a back three, and Heckingbottom took over). He's essentially been "worth" 4 goals more than an average keeper would've conceded.

Plus this is pure shot-stopping and doesn't take into account handling, catching, sweeping up through balls etc, all of which I'd say he's done to a high standard since November.
 
Just goes to show that you should never write off a player until he has been given a proper chance in the team.
The keeper position had been a worry for well over a year until he stepped up. Now he is one of our strongest performers
 
To put a bit of perspective on to last night Nathan Baxter appears towards the top of all those lists.

It would seem that Hull don't concede many with him in the nets.
 
Have to admit that I'd never have predicted his contribution at the start of the season.

Didn't see him as our number 1 but he's proved me wrong and been largely faultless in league games.
 
I'll eat humble pie on Wes.

Thought he looked atrocious in his first couple of games (before this season).

But he's been a calm, assuring influence at the back since he got in the team. Very impressive actually. Fair play to the man.

There's some good keepers in the Championship, I've been particularly impressed with Ingram and Nicholls
 
Is there a league table for how many minutes on average per game they waste taking a goal kick. Split down into sub categories of

  • organising centre halves on 6 yard line for potential pass
  • looking distraught that it’s not worked
  • wofting arms to get them up pitch
  • -resettling ball
  • -tapping studs on post and kicking the fucker

Agree - he looks much more assured and so am i in him - well done Wes and Hecky and the defence as a whole

I’m still far from convinced. Yet again last night Hull would have scored if their guy nods it into an empty net while Wes was nowhere near it late on.

He’s a good shot stopper but his decision making is simply dreadful.
 
Early days I used to shit myself when the balm got played back to him. He had a few harem scarem moments. He was also lucky not to give a goal away at Luton.

Of late he's been very assured to the point I'd say his passing is now very decent. He knocks some nice middle distance passed to pick out our men and his throwing is also quite accurate to aid the counter.

Amazing what a run of games and a bit of confidence does.

We could have saved 18m and bought a left centre half in the end and stayed up! Sorry, spoiled the mood there 😁
 
He looked great in the pre season videos and I'm glad it's working out for him. I was worried that the clean sheets were flattering him as he faced so few shots each game, but the saves percentage says otherwise. Well done L1W.
 
Just interviewed him pre Stuttgart. Said he was signed when we were last in PL knowing he would’nt be No.1 but that’s different this time.

So no keeper signing.
