Can anyone clarify this?

I've just watched the highlights of the Charlton game and after their second goal the scorer jumped over the advertising hoardings and celebrated with the crowd. He was followed by six/seven other players. A guy behind me shouted that the ref should book them all as they aren't allowed to leave the field of play to celebrate. As if to confirm this the ref then walked to the hoardings and looked over as if to check if there was grass (pitch) on the other side. He then walked back to the centre of the pitch and did nothing. I'm fairly sure that the hoardings are at the edge of the pitch all around the ground so once over them you are no longer on the pitch. If this law is correct (and the refs actions got me thinking what the guy said might be correct), did the ref bottle it?

Lets face it that ref didnt know the rules any way. How many handballs fouls etc did he let go? Not to mention the penalty decision he let go or the fact their keeper was holding on to the ball for 10 seconds at a time. Is it still the 6 second rule?

I think all he did was walk over to the side of the goal, grab what I think might have been a drinks can that was on the pitch and put it behind the hoardings. Must admit I was expecting him to do something over the excessive celebrations.

Still comes back to the fact I feel that referees are letting more slip in terms of what is done to us than what is done by us.

Who cares? I dont mind opposing teams celebrating with their fans. What I dont like is when they score and deliberatley go about trying to piss off the home fans. Novak this season is a classic example, the prick.
Anyone who went to Oakwell when we won 1-0 and Sharp scored the winner would agree that if Charlton players should have been booked for their celebration, then all of our players should have been sent off.

I do think that blatant reference to the opposition's fans should carry a booking and that there should be some kind of ruling when it creates a hazardous situation for any fan in the ground. Everyone wants to see a goal celebrated, but there's little responsibility shown by the Ref when things start to get out of hand.

I hate the one where they put their hands to their lips, to imply quiet / hush. Do they think they are a teacher at school?

And the kissing of the badge. Ask Sir Neil about that and Carl Loss Tevez...

There are some classic goal celebrations though. Alan Shearer's used to be cool (hand up in the air) and Brian Deane's were good (esp his first goal at Leicester!). Also don't like Lee Hughes but his goal dance is quite funny.

This must be the most ignored rule in football and I think I've only ever seen a free-kick given for it once.
Maybe 6 seconds is too short if you include the goalie climbing to his feet, waiting for the defence to push out etc.
It would be better if they made it 15 seconds but actually enforced it.

Agreed. Their manager (Powell?) & assorted hangers-on raced halfway down the touchline a la Brian Laws when they got their first. Excited at getting a goal, maybe. This was blatant winding-up.

Under Law 12, Fouls and Misconduct it states:

Indirect Free Kick

An Indirect Free Kick is awarded to the opposing team if the goalkeeper, inside his own penalty area, commits any of the following four offences:

- controls the ball with his hands for more than six seconds before releasing it from his possession

Agree, never see it enforced.
