beattie

All these facts and figures and reasons why Beattie wouldnt fit in etc are to me, frankly bizarre. For a league on club to land Beattie would be a massive massive coup. If Beattie went to any other L1 club I would be hulk green with envy.
We need another striker, James Beattie is a quality striker, game over.

Exactly right ,compare with the massives signings of O'Grady and Lowe. Imagine if the pigs were linked with Beattie ,we would be sick.

'Tonne was always looking to open his body up ...'

... Foxy's heart started racing a bit then

Just heard a rumour from a pretty reliable source the Beattie was at our training ground today

When Wilson said he had spoken with BT, I was suprised we had not made the offer for him to train with us, as apparently he has self declared himself unfit.

there must be a slight chance of us signing him up-if he can prove his fitness.
But his fitness doesnt concern me,i reckon bt could play at 70% fitness and bag goals in this division.
Anyone remember sir neil shipperly?,that pie muncher weighed in with some of the goals that got us promoted, and he was the unfittest striker in the championship that season, and never did us any harm.
BT will do the clubs promotion push no harm either.

To be honest, I get the distinct impression that Beattie would rather be at home, counting his money, growing his paunch and playing with his X box rather than being kicked to death by third division defenders.

Polishing his hub caps too.

CURTIS - NEVER FORGET!

I can't help thinking if he was returning he would have returned by now, do we need him, well, no not at the moment.

Yes we need him. He would help us walk this league. The chances we created over the last 2 games he would have had 2 hat tricks

What made you come to that conclusion?

That he is unfit, doesn't have a contract and doesn't seem to be making any real effort to get fit and get a contract any time soon.

Oh yes, he probably spends all his money on gold plated alloy wheels, just to rub the nose in of the rest of us in these hard times...

So have you been stalking him day in day out over the last 3 weeks to know this?

yes, of course, he's my hero.

No, of course I don't know, just an inference from the lack of any activity from any club about signing him.

It could, of course, be that he is actually aware of our piss poor financial plight and, as such, doesn't want to take any money off us when he knows he's not ready to play yet. (I'm not saying this is true, though I'd like it to be, just a possibility.)

I've made no secret of the fact I want him to re-sign for us so maybe I'm looking for positives and glimmers of hope where there are none.

It might be, but when he was already bleeding us dry to the tune of £2million per season, his agent was trying to screw another pay rise out of us. I sincerely doubt our austerity is top of his priorities all of a sudden.

why do we always blame the players for greed when we hand the contracts out? halford was on the same money as beattie, i dont ever recall him being pilloried

Do we actually know what BT was on? I've heard anything from £20k to £60k with the latter including Everton still paying him £20k just to get him off their wage bill and McCabe personally topping it up.

You've just put words in my mouth there. I'm drawing a conclusion that a player who wasn't stisfied with £2Million per year in the championship doesn't smack me as one who has our financial predicament at his heart - rather his own. Maybe he's had a re think, and maybe pigs might fly.

As you mention it, Halfords contract goes into the same file as Beatties and the rest of Robson's signings - the one named "How Sheffield United flushed its medium term future down the toilet"

It is not about what he was on its about what he is willing to take now. He has just been paid off by Rangers so if he wants to play for us he can afford to play for next to nowt.

Who is Curtis? I've forgotten.

He was on the old BU site and was comedy genius.

This particular reference is to an incident when John Denver posted that he had seen Beattie on Ecclesall Road loading up some new alloy wheels and Curtis weighed in with a statement that Beattie should think about all the people who had lost their jobs in the recession before buying such expensive things as alloy wheels in full potential view of the said jobless people. This led to an extended discussion about exactly where Beattie should buy his alloy wheels (the general view was at a garage somewhere up on a Peak District moor where there were unlikely to be hordes of jobless Sheffielders mooching around).

You do know no one was forcing us to pay him that money or sign him.

McCabe was just generous enough with parachute payments to fork out that much for him.

This point keeps being made, and I still don't get it. Of course he only took what was on offer. Of course he's a greedy fucker but we're told we'd all do the same. That's the accepted wisdom. So if we go along with that and return to the original point*, it seems very unlikely that he's going to start acting just for the love of SUFC, no?

To address your point, the parachute money covered a few things. It didn't cover nearly enough. And McCabe wasn't generous enough to fork out anything other than huge loans. It's all debt owed by SUFC to McCabe, with interest. More than he'd get in a bank. Until he writes it off, he'll get no thanks from me for landing us in such debt.

Not that I hold any brief for McCabe, but isn't the reality that there are only two possible scenarios in which he can get back money he loaned to SUFC:

1. If he forces the club into liquidation. I don't think even his worse enemy would suggest he will do that.
2. If he finds some other wealthy mug who fancies spending his money on the vanity project that is a football club and who is willing to buy the club from him.

Either way, lending money to SUFC is not the same as normal commercial lending. If McCabe just wanted to increase his wealth he would not lend money to SUFC.

Yes, I agree it's more complicated than I suggest. But so far it's anything but a gift, and it's quite clear that the spending on Beattie, and all the other stupid contracts, properties etc have lead to us being next to broke now. If said contracts had been covered by parachute payments and McCabe's generosity, we wouldn't be in the mess we are now.

I've laways argued that MCabe wanted what's best for us. I just think the vast majority of his decisions have spectacularly backfired.

I thought he had written off a chunk of debt by converting it to shares?
