Bit less of the oldies FB, but I seem to remember during the football season they were stacked in the area to the right of the Pavilion (railway hotel end). From memory they were quite long with cast iron legs, can't remember how many they seated though but there was no elf and safety so who cared, As the cricket season started the club would ask for volunteers to get them out, payment was beer in the Railway.

ahha - so they were cricket related?

The present owner suggested that they may have been cut down, which all makes sense now.

PS: It takes an oldie to remember a 3 sided ground - like me!

Definitely cricket benches cut down.
Second photo in this article shows them.

Thanks for this - but The Guardian? - I need to have a sit down after a quick rendition of "we'll keep the red flag flying high"!

I was at that match with my best pal at time with our scorebooks! - sat in open seats just to the left of the old kop roof.

One of my main memories was the diamond of earth on the football pitch at the start of the cricket season before the new grass had grown - players are so spoilt with a desso.

I think from memory that those people are under the kop roof - when we went, we sat further round on benches. Those benches in the background are on the corner, so reckon we were between the edge of the kop roof and the corner. My Grandma and grandad lived on Margaret Street, only a couple of hundred yards as the crow flies from John Street so it was quite handy when Yorkshire did play.

It is a long long time ago............!!

Great photo though :)

I remember in August 1969 being at a Yorkshire match (against Lancs. I think) and hearing they were looking for volunteers to come back the next day to move all the seats / benches in preparation for the opening fixture against Middlesbrough.

We came back and helped move them to that 'concourse' area on the corner of Bramall Lane and Cherry Street.

I am sure we heard a rumour that Arthur Rowley had left. My one and only time of being ITK.

I was 14 so there were were no free beer at the Railway!!

Came across this yesterday - someone has made this seat from the original iron work from I believe the old John Street (a guess)?

Any oldies know where these used to be exactly in the ground and when?

The person who now has it reckons it was a big construction company who did some work.

Thoughts?
