Earlier this week, Wilson insisted another high-earner would have to depart Bramall Lane before he could consider signing McDonald following his arrival on trial.

But, asked what had changed since, Wilson, whose team will play Everton in the League Cup second round, said: “Kevin has bent a little and it’s also down to the owner too.

“Nothing is sorted-out yet and we might be being a little premature but hopefully we’ll be able to get something done. I don’t think he (McCabe) will be making a habit of doing this because there are budgets which, quite rightly, we have to try and adhere too. But there has been movement.”

Wilson, who told The Star that another prospective target – Alex Kruk – has now returned to Germany, confirmed goalkeeper Matt Duke is continuing to train with his squad in the hope of earning a deal.

With further talks scheduled to take place ahead of tomorrow’s League One fixture with Brentford, McDonald could feature against the visitors from Griffin Park.

“Fair play to Kevin,” Wilson added. “He’s shown a commitment to being here because I know he could easily have gone and found himself another club.

“But I think he’s enjoyed himself here, has had a good look at the set-up and decided that he really fancies the challenge of trying to help us get back to where we should be.

“Kevin feels as if he’s got something to offer us and we do as well.”

Re Matt Duke.

Do we really need another goalie? We have Simonsen, Aksalu and Long. Won't we need to get rid of one of those if we want to bring in Duke?

Aksalu is apparently injured, but we do have a tall Aussie in reserve too.

I'm with you in not really needing another keeper.

Could the Matt Duke issue have been raised following Simonsen's less than convincing form last season? However, by all accounts he's started well this season which may well reduce the need to sign another first team keeper.

Simonsen needs pushing, Aksalu isn't good enough, and neither is Long.

Long needs a few more years before he'll be ready IMHO, and would benefit from a loan.

How long has Aksalu been with us now? 2 years? is he likely to get any better at this point?

He joined in Jan 2010 as I recall, but his contract runs to next summer.

I tend to agree with you. He is Justin Haber Mark II. It might be worthwhile paying up his contract (we can't be paying him much) and bringing in a better keeper.

Would be good to add another to the squad but lets hope a player we need doesn't leave.

Bet there were a few moths flying round the boardroom when McCabe opened his wallet ;)

If McCabe is serious about getting promotion then signing Old McDonald, Kruk and Duke should be done ASAP, if mccabe does this it might just show the fans he does indeed want to make up for the nightmare last season and re build a bridge or two with the fans by showing a little commitment without putting a price on it.
C'mon Kevin show how much a "true blade" you are, surely promotion is worth a couple o' million investment from you.

Let’s not forget that the wage bill has already been slashed since last season (16 players out, only 3 players in + 2 improved contracts).
On top of that the club will have budgeted for a First Round exit in both cup competitions, so any money from the Everton tie is an unexpected bonus.
And McCabe did promise that “whatever needs to be sensibly funded WILL be funded”.
We currently only have 13 fit Senior players, so I think that funding the wages of around 3 more players should be considered a “sensible” request.

McCabe much maligned , is still turning up with funding, wish some people would give him some leeway
He said 2 years ago hed spent enough, but hes stayed loyal , not letting us go to speculators

Spot on that mate

"not letting us go to speculators" only because no one wanted to buy us, dont be fooled by his "loyalty" its in his intrest that the Blades dont go to the wall or his shares will be almost worthless.
