First home defeat

We need to aim at making it a fortress again, not cowering away like the pigs do at home. Everybody used to be scared about coming to the Lane, we need to hammer Brentford & Walsall to prove that we're not playing silly games, we mean business.

Didn't need to win me over because I was working on the assumption that Monty and Doyle would not form our centre-midfield pairing. Know what you mean Swiss re Danny having confidence to pick em because defeats with them two in midfield will lead to huge problems for him. Very disappointed he picked these two talentless, pathetic footballers.

But they played and we won so what's your point?

Didn't go. It is impossible to enjoy watching a football game with them two performing in midfield unless it is comedy you are after.

Why is there still so much negativity from you? Why do you even bother going to the games? Why do you even like football?

We've won an away game on the opening day of the season. Doesn't matter if it was against Man Utd or Oldham Athletic, we've got to beat the team placed infront of us. We did the job we had to do. We made a winning start to the season. We're in the play offs. We're above Wednesday. We've got 2 home games to build on the first victory. Then if we've got 9 points, we go to Tranmere with confidence, we're then on 12 points and top of the league.

But all of that is insignificant when you've got Montgomery & Doyle in the team. Get a grip Mic!

seeing as we get 10000 more fans than most other teams then we are man utd at this level and as such should perform accordingly.. anything less is failure.. as it was last season

Very simple point. I don't want to see Monty and Doyle playing together for SUFC. I see the ineptitude of both players as huge reasons why we went down and believe it is impossible to succeed at any level with central midfielders who cannot pass and cannot score.

Unfortunately Wilson doesn't share my view it seems and that is fine, he knows more about it and his neck is on the line but I'd rather see pace, youth, hunger and ability in midfield rather than two donkeys. If results suffer as a result then honestly I am not as fussed as I was before - see McCabe/Birch for the reasons why.

Fair point.

I would prefer better players too and it might be that Williamson and/or Tonne play on saturday as we're at home. It might be that he plays Monty and Doyle all year. Personally as long as we win i couldn't care less if he Played Simonsen and Long in the middle

Baffles me how any manager would think it good to have an away team and a home team, certainly one that is quite rightly expected to be in the top 6 all season. If he thinks Doyle and Monty are his best combination then he needs to pick em week in week out until one gets injured. My opinion is that if he picks em week in week out we'll lose alot of games and he'll be out of a job. Not only will we lose alot, we'll fail to score many goals and fail to entertain. Same for Collins - poor Harry having to learn his trade alongside that, it could not be worse. If we beat Brentfoprd 4-0 with the same side I'll owe you a bevvy or two!

One of reasons why so many Blades are pissed off (not you it appears) is because of the mind-numbing hoofball we have watched recently and picking these 2 in midfield will lead to a continuation of the mind-numbing hoofball which has got us into this mess in the first place.

Since when has Tonne become a world beater?

He looked nothing special when I saw him last season but he keeps getting mentioned as a potential regular for midfield.
Wait til he plays a few games before you judge whether he is better than what is already out there or not.

Fergie plays a five man midfield in Europe and against top four PL opponents. But not against anyone else.

Not that I'd pick Monty and Doyle, but I'm not averse to a defensive option when required.

For the record... I hate Michael Doyle. He is by far and wide THE WORST central midfielder I have every seen in my 27 years. Having said that, last season was THE WORST season i've ever had supporting Sheff Utd. We never got going had 3 different permanent managers (Speed & Adams should never have been appointed) but the reports from pre-season and Doyle's interviews pre-season suggest that he is a box-to-box player not a holding player. It may be that Wilson will unlock his true potential. I'll hold back my judgement until Saturday when i've seen him play again.

At the end of the day DW knows more than us as he gets paid to pick them.

Danny Wilson knowing what he's doing, picking Doyle, and Doyle being the worst midfielder you've seen in 27 years doesn't seem compatable?

Doyle certainly isn't far and away the worst you've seen!

Unless of course, you close your eyes every time The Maestro is in hoofing distance of the ball. For that, you could not be faulted, of course. It is a natural reaction.

My point was that Doyle for me is like everybody else's Mongomery. I hate him. I knock him everytime he does a bad pass. I sarcastically laugh when he does a good pass. I cringe when he lines up to shoot but, if DW sees him as the regular central midfielder then obviously he knows something or has seen something that I haven't. I hope I see it this season.

Montgomery for instancve has been ridiculed throughout his career but has played hundreds upon hundreds of games under numerous different managers and i prefer him to be in the team than out of it. Clearly these two are the best option or they wouldn't be playing.

We've got Williamson who is far more technical and creative sat on the bench. Tonne who keeps getting mentioned, sat on the bench. McAllister sat on the bench. Maybe we're trying to settle in an make sure we don't lose the first few games then a change in tactics may arise. Maybe DW sees Doyle & Monty as the pairing all season, we'll have to wait and see.

>Maybe DW sees Doyle & Monty as the pairing all season, we'll have to wait and see
if he does he'll be out of a job by xmas

DW himself said that he chose Monty and Doyle because of what he saw when scouting Oldham. He admired that it isn't a creative central midfield (ten points for stating the bleedin obvious) but he expected that with two good wingers AND two attacking full backs, we could still pose a good threat.

And he was spot on, so well done.to DW. I guess as Blades fans we aren't used to having a manager intelligent enough to modify his team to suit the opposition...

Ill say it again
take OUR KEEPER, last season took a lot of stick , many fell out with him
but then see it from his view , playing behind a back four , that changed more often than posh spice
Hows any keeper going to perform consistently when theres MORE THAN 20 different personnel in the back 4 protecting him , he must forget which names to call out

Same for Doyle , you need a settled team to reach levels of acceptable competance

Both played again last night against lower division opposition. I think we got away with it at Oldham too. I'm not really that fussed, it just seems that current team selection isn't exactly what it said on the tin when we appointed Wilson. And Monty's current and ongoing inclusion (no problem from me) must be difficult to defend by some of DW's more enthusiastic supporters.

I keep mentioning him as one I'd like to see in the squad, but thats from a number (more than "a few") of reserve/development/friendly outings.

interesting to see if perceptions have changed since August
Many thought it,d be half kids in the team

Has there been progress
in other pre season threads many thought we,d do well to be mid table ,,, at best
Is 4th a reasonable spot to be in concidering the mess we were , at Swansea

For me, yes but with room for improvement.

Ditto. The majority thought mid-table would do so long as we were getting ourselves transitioned into a better team. Since then we have upgraded our expectations quite a bit, but the underlying weaknesses in the squad are almost exactly the same. I wonder if the piggies were in 14th place whether our expectations would have risen quite so far..?

Good point. He's done a decent job given what he took over - but I couldn't confidently state that we wont end up mid table based on what I've seen.

He wasn't my choice, but once he became our manager, I backed him 100%, as I have done with all our managers.

For me he has been one of our better managers in my lifetime.

He has stablised the team / club.

We are challenging in 4th place, at the moment. Yes, I'd have liked us to have been 10 points clear at the top, and have thrashed Wednesday 6-0, instead of the 2-2 draw, but we are "Work-in-Progress", and I'm satisfied.

Woah woah woah sweet child of mine - a third of the way through a third division season, surely tht's far too high a praise?

After being extremely opposed to the appointment of Wilson, I have to say that whilst I don't particularly back him, he's not done anything wrong so far.

That said, the team have done alright at times, but have been very disappointing at other times.

There are key issues that need addressing. As I write we're 1-2 down to Exeter. After a decent start at the back, the holes are appearing, we're on the back foot a lot more and don't have the strength, professionalism or organisation anywhere in the back five.

EDIT: Fortunately wee have the ability to get back into games after we concede (now 3-2 up)

Double Edit: And then throw it away again!

Having seen some of the best and worst in the division there is no way that we should be looking at anything other than top 2 and from what i've seen, Wilson should be able to achieve that THIS season

Seems like the general opinion is fairly rational. No reason to go Wilson-crazy, but he's steadily doing a solid job.

Out of interest, is there anyone who went to the car park demo who now admits they are at least 'coming around' to DW?

3rd weekend running we have thrown it away......thats 6 points blown away.....we could be pushing Charlton...the truth is that the Blackpool boys are keeping us up there and Wilson has done well to bring them in BUT thats all he has done well...the defence is shocking and our central midfield is poor.....
maybe we are all thinking of better days but really Wilson should be sorting this out.....4 goals conceded to flamin Exeter!!!shocking

An appointment only matched in stupidity by the appointment of Robson. Other than a season at Barnsley Wilson has a shocking managerial record and he won't improve it here. Amongst other things his substitutions cost us the game today, like his chairman he's clueless and the sooner he departs the better.

Did the substitutions gift them goals? I agree, I would have made slightly different changes, but the substitutions didn't cost the game.

Dumb. Its amazing how shortsighted football fans can be.

He doesn't have a bad record. Not a great one, but definitely not 'shocking'. He's trying to build a team without many resources (I suspect that not being able to sell Ched Evans made his job considerably harder) and using lots of inexperienced players (which in the long run, will benefit us). We've had him for less than half a season. Only a fool would judge him now.

Take your best player off and put useless Doyle on at the side of the hapless Monty and it certainly helps to hand the initiative back to the opposition.
