now the season has started has DW started to win you over?

I did too, and as anyone sat near me will attest, I was his biggest critic last year. "OK" is still only OK though, the 2 of 'em together will cause us big problems with retention of possession against better teams in this league IMO.

As it stands with no departures I'd go with:
Flynn, Willo, Monty, Quinn

And I think Monty and Quinn will go before the deadline, so:
Flynn, Willo, Doyle, Mendez-Liang (or Tonne)

We'll need to know where we are with McDonald after any departures, and I - like others - wonder why it's all gone quiet on McAllister, who looked promising at the end of last season.

It wouldn't surprise me if we see a completely different midfield tomorrow night and hopefully, one or two decent performances will give DW something to think about. I will be amazed if we're still seeing last Saturday's midfield by the beginning of September.

Didn't need to win me over because I was working on the assumption that Monty and Doyle would not form our centre-midfield pairing. Know what you mean Swiss re Danny having confidence to pick em because defeats with them two in midfield will lead to huge problems for him. Very disappointed he picked these two talentless, pathetic footballers.

Looking forward to seeing what happens on Saturday. Brentford's tactics will be very simple - let Monty and Doyle have the ball and mark everyone else.

Really did take the edge off Saturday night for me having these two in midfield because we all know how painful the football will be to watch.

Ah well, can't have it all your way :)

I wasn't really suprised at his appointment, I was away at the time but when I got back i was a bit gutted with the reaction to be honest. He's always come across as a decent bloke and in football you have a lot of movement between clubs, the guy was just taking a job offer like anyone else, and for whatever reason KM saw Danny Wilson as the best man for the job.

Considering the uphill struggle of getting the fans onside and trying to streamline a squad with his hands tied with the likes of ched and having nothing to spend, I think he's done an excellent job up to now, the squads coming together, keeping hold of Lowton and Slew wouldn't have happened under a few of our previous managers imo, it really seemed like Danny boy won them over, and he's started with a solid win away from home.

He'll get my full judgement after a full season, but for now I'll back him 100%.

Didn't go, but I was horrified with the line-up on Saturday and don't like what I heard about Flynn and Porter. It is impossible to win promotion with 2 central midfielders who cannot score who offer zero creativity. More importantly to me, it is impossible to enjoy watching a football game with them two performing in midfield unless it is comedy you are after.

Are you suggesting that previous managers had the final say on the sale of players? Only reason Slew and Lowton remain is because nobody has offered the money that McCabe would take. Same with any player at any cluib like ours where cash is a major problem.

Monty and Quinn will still be here after the deadline I think. DW says no bids for them so far and I could see it staying that way.

If they stay then so be it. They both look like they're up for the fight and are both very capable at this level.

Playing Monty and Doyle together isnt my cup of tea but DW explained his reasons.

With Flynn, Mendez-Laing, Quinn and Tonne we have some decent wingers. Then Willo/McAllister alongside Monty/Doyle will be fine.

Would like to see McDonald signed as he would add something different to us but the budget might not allow unless one of Monty or Quinn leaves.

3600 stood behind the goal on Saturday would probably disagree :)

Not really pal, I'm suggesting that whatever Danny Wilson said to them, and he obviously spoke to them about what was on offer, had a big effect, they both signed contract extentions which they didn't have to do. The guy deserves some credit, in my opinion of course.

Monty did well at breaking up play and getting in way of shots on Sat. Doyle apparantley used to be a regular scorer for Coventry & Leeds. Wilson says he went with the strongest team against the Opposition hence why Cresswell played instead of Slew. I can see Williamson coming in for one of them on Sat

As always I try to look at things in a balanced/ pragmatic manner. So what was/ is the target for the new manager - Quite simply, taking into account the size of the club, the ambitions expressed (but not always followed up) of the club and its fans. The only target we can consider for this season is Promotion and considering our many, many failures in big games, Play Off's is not an option - So the managers single target is Automatic Promotion. Everything else is a nice to have..

Too harsh a measure. We're saddled with park footballers like Evans sapping premiership wages from a third division club. Taking that into account, we have no right to be demanding promotion. A season of stability and the riddance of bad rubbish will do for me.

even mourinho wouldn't win me over if he kept playing monty and doyle.. together even.. in the same team even.. (surely not for the home games?).. seeing as monty is so rated by everyone i'm surprised that one of his many suitors haven't bought him yet (not)

Monty will go nowhere because there isn't another club daft enough to pay his wages for his level of 'talent' !
Same with Evans, unfortunately we're saddled with them both
But, in my opinion they are better value to United not playing, than being 'put in thew shop window'
Lets face it - this division is pretty poor quality wise - get the side organised and motivated and they should be comfortable or are the likes of Carlisle, Hartlepool, Yeovil and even the mighty Stevenage going to put us to the sword!!!
We are where we are because we deserve to be after last years dire performances from players, managers and directors - all are culpable for our embarrassing position in English football!
It's not good to have to read about the Blades in a half inch column headed Div One Round Up in the Sunday newspapers - thats how low we have sunk! when the likes of Brighton, Peterborough, Barnsley and Doncaster are mixing it in the Championship.
No I don't think Wilson is the man but lets wait and see...................................................

It's interesting for me that so many people are anti-Wilson because of his Wednesday connections... but applaud Harry Maguire so readily when he had a season ticket at Hillsborough until the age of 16 (and only stopped when Academy games were played on Saturday mornings).

I could be wrong, but I think this is the first ever season when any other South Yorkshire club has been in a higher division than BOTH United and Wednesday.

That's how low Sheffield football has sunk :-(

I don't have any issue with being ex -Wednesday just don't think he is a very good manager Full Stop!! Hopefully, as we're saddled with him I hope he can change my opinion - but I won't hold my breath!

I wasn't overly enamoured... but I can only judge him on what I can see and I really enjoyed Saturday's game.

If he can get the players up for it the way they were, I'm not going to waste my time being miserable because of who the manager is instead of enjoying watching them play :)

There are a few who have bemoaned Wilson's connections, but most I have seen just think he is a shite manager.

Every team that gets relegated from a division below will always be expected to be pushing for promotion. Sorry to say, but teams like ourselves, Wednesday, Charlton, Huddersfield with revenue coming from 10-15k a week attendances (and more for some games) should be financially punching above the weight of the others in this league. Add to that decent corporate facilities, big money academies, major sponsorship deals and other revenues such as merchandising etc then in reality we have to be aiming for Automatic promotion. No other scenario can be considered.

Putting it in perspective. We sold over 9k of season tickets for this season. Oldham got less than that including away fans on Saturday, they averaged less than that all season last year, financially we're in the top couple in this division.

I agree but how many Oldham players were on £10k or more on Saturday, that's where a lot of our money is going, even Morgs will still be getting wedged up every week he's out, that's half a million quid a year if he's on £10k!! how many more have we got like that?? as for the (alleged) sex pest if we are led to believe what we read he's draining even more out of our club. It takes a lot of fans paying £16-25 per game to make those figures up

How can I be expected to know who to hate unless people tell me? McGuire? Boooooo!!!

As I said before Monty said it in todays paper , the main reason we got relegated was a lack of cohesive displays due to the inconsistantcy of selection , the back row was like a game of musical chairs
DW has said theres a need for a steady side , players will miss games through injury and suspensions , but as we now have a more resolute squad we should return to more settled solid performances.
Players who looked dog shit last season , will look much better due to this stability , players need to know whos around them , we didnt have that at any stage last season
DW has sorted this out and your Doyles and Collins wont be left high and dry as often , even playing Cresswell as a target man , his preferred position worked rather than a sub stasndard wide man

Wilson has been handed more quality than he had at swindon and he got them to a play off position
I expect this at least

I'll counter that by saying that we have players on that wedge who have consistently played at a higher level than the one we are now in.

Well they've certainly appeared consistently as we've plummeted from the Prem to Division 3!

Res ipsa loquitur.

We could get 30,000 more fans than all our opposition. If we outlay that, and more, on complete rubbish like Ched Evans, then we'll be stuck here.

I'm sure you know this. I think it fits your agenda to set a high spec for Wilson...:)

We're in the third because we are crap. Our status counts for nothing. If Wilson gets this team promoted then he desreves enormous credit - and note that I shared your enormous disappointment with his appointment.

No Alco it fits the Agenda for Sheffield United :)

Anything other than promotion for the likes of us, Preston, Wednesday etc is unnacceptable. We simply have to get out of this division.

Its realistic and attainable. Lets be fair, we should be fighting for promotion to the PL, not the Championship.

where your proof because to me that is a load of old bollocks nd the biggest since friend told me arsenal will win prem title this year

That's the club you (and I) think we should be, not the one that Wilson took over. Using that as a measure would be plain daft. It's the type of mentality that had Man City sacking managers every 5 minutes because they hadn't won the league, as they plummeted to the third like us.

The side that Wilson took over was absolutley rubbish, by any measure. The job is made harder because the absolutely rubbish components are unsaleable. Any less than 2 years to get us promoted and stable will be a fantastic job. His track record suggests he's not up to it - but if he does the unthinkable then it will be a remarkable job.

He's been a pro for quite a while now, you'd have thought he may have progressed a bit further than that by now

As to Wilson? Doesn't matter whether he's a pig or not, it's whether he can get us winning that counts. After the last few seasons I'm not even bothered about winning pretty anymore, just get us winning, get us promoted and that'll do for me.

Totally agree with Swiss on this one!
Sheffield United FC have been reduced from a Premier/upper echelons of the championship by Mr McCabe - we have sold players like Naughton, Walker, Beattie, Kilgallon, Hulse,Kenny etc etc and replaced them with the likes of Evans, Simonsen, Nosworthy (on loan) Yeates, Doyle, Collins, Bent (on Loan) etc etc etc and not forgetting making Monty the most overpaid under talented 'footballer' in the whole league structure
We cannot afford to stagnate in the third division Yes guys, third division wake up and smell the coffee!!! e beat a very poor Oldham side on Saturday, next Saturday we 'entertain' Brentford this is life in the Third division.
We have gone from a side looking for instant return to the Premier to facing the likes of Hartlepool, Rochdale and Stevenage
Embarrassed, yes totally
Unfortunately, McCabe has saddled us with Wilson not my choice or probabl;y 60-70 % of Blades when appointed
I am not going to get delerious because the have beaten Oldham - I expect them to beat Oldham, and Brentford, and Hartlepool and Yeovil and even Stevenage.
Mr Wilson, McCabe has put you in a difficult position, but Sheffield United FC should be better than Dision Three.....I rest my case!

It's a crap case though. We aren't better than division 3 right now. Check the tables. None of that is to do with Wilson.

Very true, but he takes responsibility now and is already setting targets of promotion himself...

Very true, but he takes responsibility now and is already setting targets of promotion himself...

And so he should because with our squad size and quality for the standard of this division we should be capable of walking it, last season we had an average size squad this season IMHO we have a large squad we have sold 3 players that played a part last season but 2 of them hardly played a major part, we have replaced that with 2 youth players coming into the first team for the whole season, brought 4 in and have a couple coming back from injury before xmas.
