Confess your unpopular opinions regarding SUFC

Not necessarily one which is just SUFC related but almost every night match i read the phrase "Under the Lights" - Its become a really tired old cliché, overused for every night match which for some reason grinds my gears.

Home to QPR - "Under the Lights" don't miss it!
Home to Carlisle in Carabao - "Under the Lights"

Night matches have a special feel to them, especially in Autumn and Winter, whether it's against a top team or not. Finishing work to race home for a quick shower and back down to the Lane for a pint or two. You can't blame the club, media or even fans for using the term "under the lights".

The amount of flack Jack Robinson gets is shameful.

1. He only cost £500k
2. He's a back-up player
3. He's a back-up player being asked to play out of position
4. It's not his fault he's picked and that we don't have better options.
5. He's not been great, but not terrible either, and his great piece of skill against Everton last year got us a fantastic win that we should be grateful for.

I hadn’t seen any of the actual abuse until I had the misfortune to read the replies to United tweeting yesterday’s team. Jesus. I mean, he’s not been playing well, but… well, some people clearly have issues.

Yeah, I agree with this, so don’t mind a cliche when it’s true. I bet almost everyone’s favourite United game was “under the lights”

Getting back to the thread title, my (probably) unpopular opinion is that Wilder should have talked Duffy around by negotiation instead of taking his bat home when his agent wanted more dosh for the Prem. He was special when playing for us and I think was the single biggest factor in the rise from L1 to Prem. Indeed, Currie said on Radio Shef that Duffy was the best midfielder since the old days of him and Woody. Instead we ended up relying on Lunwank and that great Norwegian lump to try to be creative.
Fleck and Norwood aren't the same without |Duffy always being ready to take the ball, and to also get himself forward beyond our own forward line.
Cue Berge bingo......

I thought Wednesday’s song and bounce routine was quite impressive .

Shame that Duffy went and spoiled it . :)
That's all we have left now , memories of a cheap but one of the best make shift teams we have had , held together by the best manager we have had , then it went tits up when egos and big money got involved 💰

It was something special and once in a lifetime wasn’t it? I’m glad I got to witness it, even if it went tits up at the end.

At 2-2 I said to my Dad I’d take a draw. The bouncing and noise was a bit scary and I thought they had us. There said it

You shower? Fancy. Get you

Michael Brown was considerably better than Duffy.

Not sure that’s unpopular but thought it a view worth offering :)

But still better than at least a dozen CB’s currently playing in the Premier League , and Ben Davies who Liverpool paid 20 million for .
Am I correct with this one Joe?
Vs Derby, Davies did a Joe Shaw. 2nd half left side. Feigned going for a high ball, dropped a shoulder, putting off Derby player then turned and calmly played
ball to Olsen.
Never saw the Great man, but dad reckoned that move was in his repert... repatoi... repo... locker.

I think we still need a Goalkeeper.

I wasn’t there but if he did that then it was pure Joe - in fact , one the aspects of his play that I most remember him for .

Sorry , my mistake . :(

In fairness they got him for a snip because it was a January purchase and he was out of contract that Summer. PNE fans (if I remember rightly) did seem to think he was worth anywhere between £6-10m. I've been pretty impressed by him to be honest, though many haven't. I just don't think Egan compliments his style (& vice versa) and he's not had a good left back supporting him. He's quick and can certainly play a bit.

John Egan - not that good.

Brentford fans were adamant Egan was (at best) average Championship standard
and my view is in a 2 centre back set up he is average but put him in the middle of a 3 and his weaknesses are covered.
Egan has been superb for us playing in the middle of a back 3…..but now this season we see why Brentford weren’t as impressed with him.

My unpopular view that I’ve had for over 2 years is our players on an individual level aren’t that good.
I kept hearing about Chris Bashambauer….agree he was great in the PL but I remember him in league 1 when he was average at that level.
People kept raving about John Fleck and how West Ham want him for 15 million…so let’s give him a big pay rise.

I kept being asked by non Blades “why are Sheff United so good”?
It was because we asked the players to play a simple short pass and move game….no one had individual ability to create or score a gosl.
Our secret weapon was to send a centre back down the wing…so it became 2 against 1….and we’d look dangerous down the wing.
Sometimes the opposition would send a centre back over to make it 2 against 2
but then we’d send John Fleck over so it became 3 players against their 2 players on the wing and we’d look dangerous again.

It was the “attacking centre back” system that made us look good.
We were lucky in that O’Connell was centre back come left back with a great cross
Also lucky that centre Basham was decent on the ball with fantastic stamina able to run up and down the pitch with ease.
We we’re also lucky that our players were able to practice the centre back system in the lower/easier leagues.

The reason we were relegated last season was down to injuries.
O’Connell and Basham were the key to our success, we needed both.
Wilder found out what he probably already knew. When he was forced to try a plan B or plan C his players weren’t quite good enough.

Despite our troubles I’m quite enjoying the Championship and the thrill of getting there is better than experiencing the Premier Leagues itself
I'm not enjoying this season one bit, I thought positively after our brief interlude in that awful rich boys Premiershit... so far it's not been one bit entertaining... suppose too many things have changed in a short time let's hope January brings a spark!
