John Egan - not that good.
Brentford fans were adamant Egan was (at best) average Championship standard
and my view is in a 2 centre back set up he is average but put him in the middle of a 3 and his weaknesses are covered.
Egan has been superb for us playing in the middle of a back 3…..but now this season we see why Brentford weren’t as impressed with him.
My unpopular view that I’ve had for over 2 years is our players on an individual level aren’t that good.
I kept hearing about Chris Bashambauer….agree he was great in the PL but I remember him in league 1 when he was average at that level.
People kept raving about John Fleck and how West Ham want him for 15 million…so let’s give him a big pay rise.
I kept being asked by non Blades “why are Sheff United so good”?
It was because we asked the players to play a simple short pass and move game….no one had individual ability to create or score a gosl.
Our secret weapon was to send a centre back down the wing…so it became 2 against 1….and we’d look dangerous down the wing.
Sometimes the opposition would send a centre back over to make it 2 against 2
but then we’d send John Fleck over so it became 3 players against their 2 players on the wing and we’d look dangerous again.
It was the “attacking centre back” system that made us look good.
We were lucky in that O’Connell was centre back come left back with a great cross
Also lucky that centre Basham was decent on the ball with fantastic stamina able to run up and down the pitch with ease.
We we’re also lucky that our players were able to practice the centre back system in the lower/easier leagues.
The reason we were relegated last season was down to injuries.
O’Connell and Basham were the key to our success, we needed both.
Wilder found out what he probably already knew. When he was forced to try a plan B or plan C his players weren’t quite good enough.
