16 shots 2 on target according to bbc stats we should be mullering sides with that amount of possession shame most of it is in our own half
 



Yup, the action areas say it all:

76% possession, yet the ball was in our third more than theirs. We need to play higher up with BO and/or GB covering with their pace

Osborn's technique was appalling on 2 shots and several simple clearances he kicked out. Even at Championship level he does not have the technique required. I always think if you are small physically you have to have very good skill/pace to make up for lack of physicality but he is not someone who has either of these really.

Should only be used as a bit part fill in and only in a midfield 3 or a wing back.

Furthermore we need to move Lowe on. If he starts Osborn who is not a left back ahead of him with RND/Stevens injured surely there is no future for him at the Lane?

I got funny looks for shouting “shooting at goal is a basic fucking skill Osborn”. Probably a bit wordy but I was right.
 
Does the 76% possession include the time the ball spent in the air from our endless hoofball towards the touchlines in Brums half!!???

Most of our defenders and midfielders were guilty of 'aimless balls down the channels/middle, for someone to (hopefully!) run on to'! at some point during the game.
Though special mention must go to Ramsdale for his 600yd hoofballs straight into the hands of their keeper as he sat watching the game on TV in the Cremorne. 😁
That said, 2 of Ramsdale's kicks out of his hands were our only 2 Shots on Target!

Sadly, The art of the 'Inch perfect ball,... to no-one in particular' was on full display by our players last night!.

Rammers did also have one or two lovely low pings straight to the whoever it was in centre circle. This is something he occasionally did last season and should be utilised more in order to spring quick attacks which is exactly what we needed yesterday

Thought the players looked scared to make mistakes, resulting in picking the safe option almost every time. Birmingham pressed us well high up the pitch and sometimes we lacked the composure/vision to spot a teammate in a good position, but players also failed to find pockets of space and show for the ball. Couple of examples:

* Osborn runs forward on the ball, we have got past their two strikers and drawn their RCM to close down. There are forward runs, Brum are having to back off. Norwood is in a good position to get on the ball and advance with it, but just stays deep/hides (doesn't make the suggested run shown by the red arrow. Osborn stops and passes it backwards to Robinson. Very typical first half situation.

* Another situation showing Birmingham pressing the man on the ball. There is space behind their midfield, but neither Baldock or Burke are showing for the ball (red arrows), so the advanced pass (yellow line) isn't played. Instead Norwood chips it out wide to Osborn. Nice pass, but Osborn is closed down and ends up losing it, trying to make something happen in the wrong situation.

Regarding our playing style, I think the yellow line passes and the red arrow movement may be things that SJ wants to happen, and to be fair to the players, they haven't had much time to really work on this. When they couldn't find good passing moves they ended up passing sideways and backwards.
 
When our wide players had the ball there was no options in front. The square balls almost always went backwards because Didzy and Fleck were too narrow (hardly a surprise) as well as Moose and Brewster (although they made a few good runs inside full back and CB). It took either a Norwood switch or a Berge run to break the lines. He seems to have got pelters again, but Brewster was actually the one who showed the intelligence to hold his position and create some width and interplay on the left resulting in a period of pressure. Mcburnie too dropped deep and helped to build the attacks.

I agree, but playing this style doesn't require us to always play the yellow line passes and make the red arrow movement.

We didn't do it enough against Brum, but you will always be able to find those situations while we play this style. It's all about finding the right moment to play forward and being patient.
 
Yes it was slow, ponderous and you'd struggle to argue that we were good or overly effective.

But... Teams that get +60% possession each week generally do well in the long run. We completely controlled the ball / were patient in the build up (maybe overly so), with a squad with no fresh faces and a crap pre-season.

Stick in a few new faces, get the squad up to speed with style of play and we'll be fine. Its a big change going from 30% possession to 70% so bound to take a bit of time to get used to.
 
Playing the less safe ball is a hangover from last season but I do think we’ve only got a small number of players technically comfortable in taking the ball under any pressure. This is why we see screams to make runs, find space because our first touch is generally a risk under pressure. I think our confidence will grow and fix the first element, players who are happy taking the ball under some level of pressure probably needs new personnel but it’s not something you generally get in the Championship, so you work around it. I still do not see anything from Saturday which I don’t think will be actioned and resolved by the manager but we can reassess once the window closes.
Again, for those in the cheap seats, for the level of player we want with our budget it’s going to happen later rather than sooner in the window.
Any other expectation is just unrealistic.

It’s very true JonnyD, half of the battle with Slav style is being comfortable with the ball and dominating possession. If you’re going to restrict most teams to 30% possession they better be clinical and we know, not many teams in this division score 1 in 3 never mind 1 in one. The next part of the battle is player movement and positioning that takes time.

For us mere mortal - A new manager at work, the environment, equipment, business aim and the majority of the staff are the same. Only all of the systems and ways of working have changed, you have then only had what feels like a crash course to learn how to use the new computer system/working protocols and staff isolating due to Covid (20-25 days max). In the back of everyone’s mind they know going live in a couple of weeks time with customers expectaction to deliver better standards is going to be extremely difficult. Give them time. Some might not be able to adapt, if so get rid, but we can’t start writing off players before they have been given the chance to prove their worth….again.
 
The only player that looked comfortable with the playing out from the back style was Berge-

Fleck hides doesn't want the ball- (places himself behind opposing team player - diabolical really)

Norwood always passes back from where it comes.

It was so ponderous it was embarrassing- if we persevere can only see this costing us a few horrendous goals, I'm going with 4 throughout season..
 
Having loads of possession should be fine,
But time & again the possession ended up with a panic backpass to Rammers who's only option then was to hoof it and hope.

Burke is Not a footballer

Osbourne is good taking the ball forward, but he is Not a defender, especially
when being challenged for a header or being bullied.
 
I also noted how effectively Brum used the Long Throw, I'd like to see Robinson doing the same.

I’m so shocked how one footed, some of our players really are.

A significant proportion of that possession must have been in the penalty area following Ramsdale's goal-taps. The number of goals teams ship from fannying around like that is already very high but we are well qualified to contribute to that sorry self-inflicted pain. It's an interesting study to note how often teams manage to get to the halfway line before losing possession. Try it for yourselves folks; it ain't very often! It will go down in football history as one of the daftest tactics ever adopted, and the sooner we learn the lesson the better. Meanwhile.........
 



With us having 76% and swansea 72% can easily see a 0-0 on saturday with zero chances created, but im hopeful the possession game will help us in the long run
