Outgoing? SANDER BERGE ON WAY OUT ?

Genuine question: Are release clauses generally structured with a buffer period before the end of each transfer window (ie the release clause is only valid until say 23rd August)? It seems stupid to agree to a condition that leaves you open to a swoop at a minute to midnight on deadline day with no say in accepting it and no opportunity to get a (permanent) replacement.

Never thought about that before and your point is bang on the money. If there were such a 'Buffer Period' it would do away with the last minute waiting game. By the way, are you in the wrong job?

You can write the clause however you wish (or the parties can agree whatever they wish).

But I will bet good money that it applies throughout the transfer window.

I would be genuinely surprised if it wasn't a condition in any release clause. Similar thing again with the post from Teddy in terms of payment terms. Also, for someone so young I would expect to see sell on fees stipulated as well. However, I just don't know.

PS In answer to your post, I always wanted to be an astronaut.

Thanks. I understand you could write the clause however you like, but just not sure if there is a norm for these things. £35m seems a good deal for us on 30 June, but a lot less so 30 August at 23:59

Unfortunately, I fear you are probably correct about your final point despite my post above saying I would be surprised if such conditions aren't the norm. We just have a way of pointing the gun squarely at our own feet sometimes!

I suspect if it came in really late, United could fuck the transfer up in any number of ways to miss the deadline. Broken fax machine anyone?

Let's put the out of office notification on and divert all calls to voicemail from Friday 27 August. Something like, "Thanks for contacting SUFC. If your enquiry relates to Sander Berge, please leave us a message and we'll call you back in January."

Saw it yesterday ;Napoli are ready to make a bid for him. That makes 3 teams interested, doesn’t bode well. Can we hold out or do we make the best of a 3 way auction ?
You see it all the time, so and so preparing a bid for player X, how do you prepare the bid, A- Wash; brush and apply make up. B- Sit it on the desk and give it the old Rocky speech. Or just read it the old Dear John letter and prepare it for never seeing it again. Stupid terms we hear.

If someone matches his release clause you let him go. If they don't, you stand firm.
Berge isn't at his optimum value right now, he's spent the best part of a year on the sidelines. Keep him, let him impress and sell him next Summer if we don't go up. His value shouldn't have depreciated in that time and you give yourself a much stronger chance of promotion in the meantime.

Ramsdale is different. He could be at his optimum value now. His stock is high after finishing the season strongly and going to the Euros with England. Arsenal is surely the limit of where he could possibly end up and he would be the easier player to replace of the two.
I'm not necessarily advocating selling him, but if we need to sell to invest it's one I'd consider. With £30-35m we could bring in a handful of players (maybe 2/3 perms, 2/3 loans) to really blast through this division.

well technically they couldn’t swoop in at 23:59 as although we would automatically have to accept their offer…contracts would have to be agreed and signed, medicals would need to be completed and the paper work would need to be submitted.

I guess his agent could agree terms behind our back but I’d like think the club would notice if he disappeared off to get a medical done.

maybe not at 23:59 but they could still do it late enough in the window that left it almost impossible for us to recruit someone starting from scratch.

id like to think we had a plan b just in case.

Also the £35m release clause is probably upfront or the majority of it up front.

I imagine there would need to be a little bit of negotiation done on how the fee was structured.

it can’t automatically be triggered if someone wants to do it at £500 upfront and 50p a week until the end of time can it.

it looks unlikely that anyone currently values him at £35m… never mind £35m upfront.

the more clubs that are interested in sander the better chance weve got of getting the 35m if they dont come up with it he stays if we get viera and garner in were pretty well covered anyway

Napoli are ready to bid

A club can draft a clause however they want as long as it's legal and agreeable between the parties involved.

I'm not sure whether it was actually drafted in the agreement with the player as such but Dortmund famously set Man Utd a deadline to offer their asking price for Sancho last season. That deadline was of course missed and all subsequent offers were rejected (until this summer when they actually agreed to sell for less).

Arsenal do unfortunately have previous in triggering release clauses late-on - Thomas Partey was signed on the final day of the window last season. However that cost them £45m to do so.

I really don't see the attraction of signing for either Spurs, Everton or Arsenal other than the ££££s. None of these sides look particularly likely to break into the top 4 (Champions League). None of them have particularly brilliant managers or players. Surely if you are Berge and looking for a top European club you need to be playing for Man U; Liverpool; Man City; or Chelsea. Or even maybe an up and coming challenger like Leicester or Villa. But not perennial deadwood/makeweights. Spurs get an injury to Son and lose Kane they could even get caught up in a relegation dogfight. Everton and Arsenal churn out pretty turgid defensive fare and have boring managers at either end of their careers.

Surely the point is that if he sign and pays well for one of those then he'll be signed by a big club for a huge sign-on fee and double the wages.

Yeah they’d represent the next step on his journey and the worlds elite clubs frequently buy from those types of sides but have never signed a player from us in the modern era

Why do you think he agreed to join Utd Rudders?

It was for one reason and one reason only - as a springboard for a move to a bigger club. Surely from his and his representatives' perspective, if no 'top team' is currently interested and willing to outlay the required fee, then playing for a Everton or Arsenal type of club (whilst being paid £60-100k/week) is a better shop window than playing in the Champ.

Someone tell them they have to buy the whole player, not just a limb.

It's like me talking the media that I am interested in bidding for a night of passion with Jennifer Lawrence by offering her a steak dinner, a bottle of blue nun, and the services of my 2 inch cock.

I'm interested but not sure its gunna be enough. Might chuck in a 5 minute spin of a Barry the walruss of love White LP to sweeten the deal.

Arsenal's approach isn't any better either.

"Your car, 10 quid."
"No."
"Alright, alright. You're killing me. 15 quid."
"No."
"Okay, can't believe I'm doing this. 18 quid and I'll give you another fiver if I like it."
"NO"
"Alright then. 50 quid and chuck in your house."

Well covered maybe ,but they are both a downgrade.

They are all premier league clubs though. And that’s where he wants to be no matter if we like it or not.

Surely playing in the Championship is better than being on the bench with a mid table Premiership club ?
