So it looks like it will be Robbins, but regardless of whether it’s him, Wilson, Reid, Pembo or Hill I think this post applies to all. Have we stopped and thought about the job on the new managers hands? We’ve been so busy worrying about who the manager will be, but have we all thought about what a massive job the new manager has to do.
Getting to know the club
It seems that it will be a manager brought in front the outside, which means they will need time to get to know the club. However, with it almost June and about 6 weeks away from the season they have fuck all time. Couple that with the mountain of things to do (see below) then the manager will be chucked in the deep end.
This will not apply to Robbins, as presumably he lives locally but there may even be logistical issues. Reid and Wilson would have to look for new places to live and this could hamper things.
Thinking about knowing the club, the new manager will need to get to know Pembo, Birch, (Basset?), McCabe, Batho and a host of others. They’ll need to bring a number two with them and get used to physio’s, trainers and coaches etc.
The players
How on earth is a new manager going to be able to make a judgement on the players? He will be appointed (hopefully) this week and be left with around 6 weeks for preseason. Last year we went on tour on the 12th of July, which leaves the new manager 6 weeks to assess, wheel and deal and build a new squad.
Current first team players: The new manager will have to make an assessment on Henderson, Quinn, Monty, Boggy, Cresswell, Collins, Doyle, Williamson, Evans and others. Some of these will undoubtably be sold, but surely Robbins will be given the opportunity to try and keep a few. How will he know which ones to fight for (and which one’s to boot out of the door) when he has not seen the play any games? Will he be making decisions based on a couple of weeks of training? The only potential solution I can see is that he relies on others information. Perhaps Basset could give him info, but geez it is hardly ideal.
The young lads: there is a much easier solution here. The new man will work with Pembo to see who is ready. This will be a key relationship. But we are kidding ourselves if we thinking that more than 3 or 4 (max 5 or 6) of that team can step up. The kids will help, but they will not be a miracle solution. I would hope that Pembo (or the reserve coach) could help with the development team and hence this is not the major area for worry.
New players: I have argued that we need at least 10 players for next season. I think that Hendo, Quinn, Monty, Willo and Boggy, Evans will get contracts elsewhere. Doyle, Collins and Cresswell might be more difficult to shift. We’ll be left without much experience and a bunch of kids. Hence, unless we are looking to rely on loans again, the new manager will be looking to bring in at least 7 or 8 players. Maybe even 12 plus depending on sales. Geez. That’s a big task in 6 weeks. How many players did we sign last summer? And the year before that? Brining in between 8 and 12 players will be a tall order. I can see the advantages of Wilson, Hill, Robbins and Reid as they know the lower leagues and may be able to poach players off old clubs.
What does all this mean?
We’re fucked. Not necessarily. But we can see the new manager will have a massive job on his hands. The fans will be expecting us to bounce back and the board are already making noises of expecting a promotion push. Is this realistic given the above? It is basically really difficult to say. Morgan returning, then new manager keeping Quinn and Hendo and signing 3 or 4 players and bring through the best kids and we may have a team capable of getting promoted. A lot of it will depend on how quickly the manager deals with the above and how well they do. Other factors such as the boards backing and lady luck will also play a role.
Ollessendro’s thoughts
It is too early to say, but I think we have to be realistic. The new manager may pull up trees, but I personally think that we should prepare to be in this league for a couple of seasons. Anyone remember my Watford post? I think we could learn from that and instill a new philosophy. It may take a couple of seasons to clear out the junk, the youth to come good and build a squad. Again, a lot of this will depend on how the above is addressed.
Personally I am willing to give the new manager my backing if they get some important things right. I am willing to accept life in League One for a couple of seasons if the manager shows positive signs. These are basically: bringing the kids through, some results, a change in style, more of a footballing philosophy, clearing out the junk etc. I basically want to see a plan. If they are making the right signs (just like Adams was not) then they have my support.
