So it looks like it will be Robbins, but regardless of whether it’s him, Wilson, Reid, Pembo or Hill I think this post applies to all. Have we stopped and thought about the job on the new managers hands? We’ve been so busy worrying about who the manager will be, but have we all thought about what a massive job the new manager has to do.

Getting to know the club

It seems that it will be a manager brought in front the outside, which means they will need time to get to know the club. However, with it almost June and about 6 weeks away from the season they have fuck all time. Couple that with the mountain of things to do (see below) then the manager will be chucked in the deep end.

This will not apply to Robbins, as presumably he lives locally but there may even be logistical issues. Reid and Wilson would have to look for new places to live and this could hamper things.

Thinking about knowing the club, the new manager will need to get to know Pembo, Birch, (Basset?), McCabe, Batho and a host of others. They’ll need to bring a number two with them and get used to physio’s, trainers and coaches etc.

The players

How on earth is a new manager going to be able to make a judgement on the players? He will be appointed (hopefully) this week and be left with around 6 weeks for preseason. Last year we went on tour on the 12th of July, which leaves the new manager 6 weeks to assess, wheel and deal and build a new squad.

Current first team players: The new manager will have to make an assessment on Henderson, Quinn, Monty, Boggy, Cresswell, Collins, Doyle, Williamson, Evans and others. Some of these will undoubtably be sold, but surely Robbins will be given the opportunity to try and keep a few. How will he know which ones to fight for (and which one’s to boot out of the door) when he has not seen the play any games? Will he be making decisions based on a couple of weeks of training? The only potential solution I can see is that he relies on others information. Perhaps Basset could give him info, but geez it is hardly ideal.

The young lads: there is a much easier solution here. The new man will work with Pembo to see who is ready. This will be a key relationship. But we are kidding ourselves if we thinking that more than 3 or 4 (max 5 or 6) of that team can step up. The kids will help, but they will not be a miracle solution. I would hope that Pembo (or the reserve coach) could help with the development team and hence this is not the major area for worry.

New players: I have argued that we need at least 10 players for next season. I think that Hendo, Quinn, Monty, Willo and Boggy, Evans will get contracts elsewhere. Doyle, Collins and Cresswell might be more difficult to shift. We’ll be left without much experience and a bunch of kids. Hence, unless we are looking to rely on loans again, the new manager will be looking to bring in at least 7 or 8 players. Maybe even 12 plus depending on sales. Geez. That’s a big task in 6 weeks. How many players did we sign last summer? And the year before that? Brining in between 8 and 12 players will be a tall order. I can see the advantages of Wilson, Hill, Robbins and Reid as they know the lower leagues and may be able to poach players off old clubs.

What does all this mean?

We’re fucked. Not necessarily. But we can see the new manager will have a massive job on his hands. The fans will be expecting us to bounce back and the board are already making noises of expecting a promotion push. Is this realistic given the above? It is basically really difficult to say. Morgan returning, then new manager keeping Quinn and Hendo and signing 3 or 4 players and bring through the best kids and we may have a team capable of getting promoted. A lot of it will depend on how quickly the manager deals with the above and how well they do. Other factors such as the boards backing and lady luck will also play a role.

Ollessendro’s thoughts

It is too early to say, but I think we have to be realistic. The new manager may pull up trees, but I personally think that we should prepare to be in this league for a couple of seasons. Anyone remember my Watford post? I think we could learn from that and instill a new philosophy. It may take a couple of seasons to clear out the junk, the youth to come good and build a squad. Again, a lot of this will depend on how the above is addressed.

Personally I am willing to give the new manager my backing if they get some important things right. I am willing to accept life in League One for a couple of seasons if the manager shows positive signs. These are basically: bringing the kids through, some results, a change in style, more of a footballing philosophy, clearing out the junk etc. I basically want to see a plan. If they are making the right signs (just like Adams was not) then they have my support.

Maybe not Robins Olle, he's gone from 1/8 on to 5/2 and Wilson is now odds on at 1/6........McCabe gets his way again..?

Olle, this is ridiculous. The new manager has a lead in time of about 9 or 10 weeks to the new season. He was never going to get much more than that unless he'd been appointed the day after the Swansea game. The only new manager in the last 10 years whose had longer to prepare is Bryan Robson...

Robbins... Bobbins.

Who was it said "You can write whatever you like about me, but please spell my name correctly"?

An interesting post Olle. Most of the points you make regarding getting to know staff and players apply whenever a new manager is appointed.
At least our new boss will have 2 months to sort this out before his first match rather than 2 days.
Any decent manager should have a reasonable knowledge of most of our players already.
Every match will be on DVD for them to examine in detail and all the stats you could possibly want will be available on Pro-Zone.
I don't think he'll have too much say in which players are retained anyway.
Any player (including youngsters) we receive an offer for will be sold. Any player on Championship wages will be eased out if possible.
I'm willing to accept a season of consolidation as well.
If we finish mid-table, have been entertaining to watch and given six youngsters 20 games experience each that would be a successful season for me.

I dont think its time to panic just yet but I do think its important to get someone in soon. Once the playoffs are over the transfer frenzy will start and we need someone in place to get a general idea of the squad before then. It will be difficult as players will be away on holiday etc. but I do still think the sooner the better for an appointment at this stage.

The first thing that will need to be discussed with the manager is who we can/can't afford to keep and who has/hasn't attracted any interest yet. The squad needs to be broken down and assessed from scratch. Realistically I could only see United brining in about half a dozen players (tops) between now and August because of financial restraints and inability to sell certain players from the current crop. We'll need about 3 or 4 from the academy just to supplement that.

I do think offloading a couple (possibly Ched and Hendo, maybe even Monty) will give us some room to manouvre and if KM frees up a little bit of money it should be workable. Whatever way we look at it there is still a lot of work to be done and in regard to the size of the job I agree with Olle.....its a huge task ahead!

A lot of the wheeling and dealing won't come until August time anyway, as we'll not want people on the books all summer. By that time he should know who to keep and who to ship out.

Should definitely look to appointing in the next couple of weeks though, any longer and we will be doing harm to next seasons chances.

The job on his hands? Keep the job for 4 months and he'll have achieved something big...

If wilson gets the job do you think the club will give refunds for season tickets?????

I think that's your best post to date Olle. All well thought out and can't disagree with any of it. Nice work

I see your point, Ollie but - as others have pointed out - it applies to every single replacement manager, whether pre- or mid-season. That's what they get paid big bucks for.

Also, don't you think we accredit managers with some kind of mystic powers that they simply don't possess? Without all the Pro-Zone gubbins, we the fans knew at least three of Adams' signings were crap based purely on their previous fans comments on forums, but he went ahead and signed them anyway.

Don't ever feel sorry for a football manager.

I must be the only fan on here who would say give me a new left back and right winger and off we go.

Your just not going to get rid of all the players like that. Nobody is going to pay them the wages we have been. with a couple of new players and the young lads coming through I honestly believe there is a good team waiting to break out. It just needs a good manager to come in and believe in them.

I am not nieve to think there will have to be sales etc; but if we did lose Evans, Monty, Henderson etc; does nobody else think we have enough already to make a go of it.

I thought I might've been able to rate this thread but I can't... so my rating is *****

(decide amongst yourselves if you think they are 5 stars or censoring a 5 letter swear word)

Well said Ollie.

We really should try to keep Willo. He came into his own when fully fit at the end of the season. A c/m partnership of Willo and D-Mac should be peerless in Div 3. Both can pass, score, get from box to box and win the ball.

There are other midfielders we can offload instead!

Agreed, but the problem with Willo is that he has a massive question mark over his fitness and also discipline if he can't sort them both out then he's an expensive cheerleader!

You're right Swiss but after his most recent (of many) absences he was very influential and scored three in three or something similar.

Subject to what you (rightly) say, they seem to have the best attributes of our motley crew and would, I think, complement each other well.

Williamson, McAllister, Harriott and probably one more other than Monty. They should be more than good enough

That's some reaction that is Olle

Rev/Sothall/Grafikus - I take the point, but I think that this is a different kettle of fish. More to do with the overhaul of the team. My main presumption throughout this is that we should be competitive. I think the manager has a massive job if he is going to do this.

Let me put it another way. The manager will see the rugged pulled from underneath him as Evans, Hendo, Quinn and Monty are offloaded for the highest (or any) bid. It's likely that the best young one's who put themselves in the shop window (Maguire, Slew, Whitehouse etc) are flogged. The new manager will then be left with some overpaid has been's, crocks and a few young ones.

The extra pressure is that we are a big club. We just got 29k turn up for the FA youth cup and fans are not expecting for us to spend time in the third tier. Nor is the board. If the new manager does not get things right in the summer then he could be out on his ear by November. This applies doubly if it is Piggy Wilson.

The difference, as I see it, is that this manger will barely have a squad to work with. I fully expect the majority of Hendo, Quinn, Willo, Monty, Boggy, Evans, Maguire, Whitehouse and Slew to be sold. Leaving us with Mcallister, Tonne, Philskirck and any other kids left. Plus Taylor, Morgan, Creswell, Kozluk and Simmo. A bunch of overpaid, crap crocks.

I'm willing to accept a season of consolidation as well.

It's going to be a busy bank holiday weekend for Danny. Getting to grips with the club and making his plans for the summer.

He has around 10 weeks until the start of the season. I presume we'll be going on tour in mid July, so he has to be quick in assessing his squad.

After the bank holiday weekend the season finally ends and business will start. This is when Wilson will really have to earn his money. He has a huge job (as described above) but it will be interesting to see how he goes about it.
