For those who don't check the shoutbox out I've heard a slight rumour that Robins has been appointed and there is going to be an annoucement on friday, again it's a rumour but it seems to be going in the direction most expect.

The more I think about the Wilson and Reid rumours the more I agree with a poster the other day who said those names are being banded about to make Robins look like a better option when he gets it.

I've been told that Pembo has been invited to a board meeting friday, with the assumption that he will be meeting the new manager, so I presume a press conference will follow. They were fairly sure it would be Robins, but Keith Hill's decision to reject the Barnsley job has cast a slight doubt on that. Fairly sure it won't be any of the other names being mentioned.

Appoint Wilson and we’ll be turning to Pemberton by November.

Appoint Robins and we’ll be turning to a former Blade within two years (Pembo will have left).

Appoint Reid and we’ll stand still for a year until he moves into a job upstairs and is replaced by Pemberton.

Appoint Pemberton or Hill and you’ll be looking at our manager for at least the next three to four years.

Just appoint Pemberton or Hill and let’s get on with it! Set any of the other three on and we’ll continue on the merry-go-round until someone finally makes a sensible decision further down the line. Managers that either haven’t done anything for a while or simply haven’t done anything are not what we need. Current achievers are what we need.....football is changing and it’s about time we changed with it.

I'm not having this - only recently it was a 'man's game' wasn't it, where people should be praised for running very dangerously into a player who is off the ground and who was clearly going to head the ball. Am I reading too much into your football is changing comment?

At the risk of getting involved in another tedious and hair splitting debate with you, I am simply commenting on the fact that football (as it generally does) evolves in certain ways and that a manager more in touch with the modern game and achieving things at the present time would be better. Mainly due to the criteria our esteemed owner outlined a couple of weeks ago. I dont see how the issue of physicality (which we discussed previously) comes into it. Is the issue of whether something is a foul or not relevant at all here?????

I realise you've got to pick up the mantle of arguing with every reasonable opinion on here now lenners has gone, but the subject you refer to is a very tenuous link to this topic even by your standards!

I agree with you, quite obviously given my views on Blackwell and Adams - perfectly sensible to say we want a modern manager (and not Speedo!!). It's the apparant inconsistency I take issue with - namely your mans game comment which to me goes against the football is changing comment.

Aside from a dodgy spell at Coventry, and having a fooking monkeys ee'ad, Reid's record isnt that bad.

His Leeds team were relegated, but with hindsight, were the issues at Leeds really Reid's doing? Or was he a victim of taking the wrong job at the wrong time?

Dont get me wrong, he's far from my first choice but i dont think he's the absolute shite that he's beeing protrayed....

I understand where you're coming from but I dont quite understand the relationship between the two issues and how you can suggest it makes my views inconsistent. Are you suggesting that physicality and aggression on a football pitch is directly effected by how a side uses the football? In other words - because I suggested the game is changing and we need to employ a manager with modern ideas regarding playing style, this means that I've contradicted my opinion that footballers are soft, make a meal of everything and referees are easily conned?

The issue we previously discussed was an entirely different matter IMO. We were labouring one example which we disagreed upon. The fact is that footballers are soft nowadays and they do play-act to con the ref. Everyone knows this happens and it has been made easier by the inconsistency of referees and they grey areas within modern rules. It is a massive problem within the game and has needed to be addressed for some time.

The issue of playing style is entirely exclusive to that which is why I dont see where the relationship is between the two subjects. Can players not pass the ball but also man-up a bit? Can referees/governing bodies not address the issue of inconsistency simply because of modern ideals?

Intrigued as to who they'll finally plump for, I think they'd decided on Robins but Hill turning Barnsley down has really got them thinking.

Is that "In the Know" information Frechy or just a guess? Either way I hope you're right!
Robins left Barnsley due to financial reasons but seems willing to come to us.
Hill turned down Barnsley due to financial reasons but seemed willing to leave Rochdale for the right deal.
The obvious conclusion to be drawn from this is that Hill is actually "up for grabs" if United make the approach.
It's not too late. Hill would be a far better option than Robins in my opinion and most seem to agree.
Why are United seemingly intent on looking no further than our own backyard again?
