The one position in which the Blades have been truly blessed in all my years of watching them is that of goalkeeper .

There can be few clubs who have had so many outstanding individuals in this role , starting in my case with Jack Smith and followed by the likes of Ted Burgin , Hodgy , McAllister , Brown , Kelly , Reece , Tracey etc .

Hendo and Rammers have been recent additions to this great tradition and long may it continue .

I’ve posted it mate, I also think it’s better than the Tracey save in which SB opens the thread up with, I think the Tracey save is a nice height, still a very good save though.

That's the first save i thought of, perhaps because it's in the recent past. If I remember rightly there was a look of shock on Cantwell's face that Hendo had got down to it.

Defo. I was stood right behind the goal for that, he flipped a downward header over the bar. Wasnt the header by Stuart 'tracey' Barlow?

John Hope, from a Roger Hynd header versus Birmingham City - great header, flying into the top corner, Hope didn’t just save it, he caught it.

Also seen Burridge and Roger Hansbury pull off some worldies for us in their time (Hansbury only played for few times for us before he broke his leg I think).

Burridge could be both sublime and ridiculous in the same game. He could pull some breathtaking saves off. I remember a simply fantastic save he pulled off in the last few minutes at BL against Reading to get us a draw after we had been 3 up early in the 2nd half before we collapsed when Stan the Man went off injured and lanky streak of piss Trevor Senior came on and ran riot from every set piece. Burridge would pill a worldie off and then drop a right clanger coming for a high ball and getting nowhere near it. Another Burridge spectacular was against Blackburn at home in the 3-3 game when Steve Wigley scored that great individual goal.

I thought I would be diving into this thread (goalkeeping pun unintended), but I found myself lost for ideas. It is a surprisingly difficult question to answer. The 2 best saves so far on here for me are Tracey’s, and Henderson’s away at Norwich. Both absolutely brilliant, and although Tracey’s is the more artistic, I would opt for Henderson’s if forced to choose. Tracey had to see the ball, sort his feet out, and thrust his arm out; Henderson had to do those 3, and get down to ground level. But they are both stunning.
I want to answer your question by saying Hodgy, but I am short of evidence. I have in my mind a save in front of the Kop, and believe it was v Wolves in September 1962. An outstanding first half saw Wolves leading 2-1, and their wingers, Hinton and Wharton, both had powerful shots on them. The save was from a shot seemingly 25-30 yards out, by Wharton cutting in from the left (they swapped wings regularly), heading for the top left corner and swerving (unusual in those days, but the ball was dry), and Hodgy did one of his gymnastic leaps and caught the ball, landing well wide of the goal. The only trouble is, I am not sure that my memory is accurate, particularly as that is how I also remember Wharton’s goal that day. I can’t find any info on the game, and there is in the back of my mind a little voice saying that the save was in a match v Liverpool. The trials of old age!
